Have we finally replaced Mcmanaman? The 94-97 version anyway. I reckon that's been one of our biggest problems in recent years

We've been missing width in our play for a while now, and Pennant's performance against Haifa was very encouraging. However when I think of great Liverpool wingers I think of Barnes, Beardsley and Heighway, I do not think of McManaman.

I'll wait to see how he performs for us against more challenging teams before making prophecies about him being better than McMoneyman.

i'm not really thinking of wingers. I'm more thinking of someone who can get the ball and run with it. We just have't had anyone to do that since McManaman left apart from kewell for about 3 months and that last game v chelsea

Beardsley? Are you sure?

Add Liddell to your list too.

well the original poster is correct, its not a matter of comparing mcmanaman or pennant to the greats of old....but that we havent really replaced macca since he left, we have certainly tried with smicer and kewell but neither have truly been a success..

So possibly we might have finally found a proper replacement...give it 12months time and we shall have a better idea..

and for the record.......i thought macca was fantastic for us in his time at anfield and certainly in our top 10 list of greatest wingers..

Cant believe the hard time he still gets, when the club tried to push him out for a move to barca.

Have you never seen him play for Brum? He turned in similar performances for them.

For me he's one of the most exciting signings for a while - a type of player we've badly missed for yonks.

When we were first linked to him, I prayed we'd get him. Now he's here I genuinely believe he'll be a real success, and probably a revelation to many of our fans

If he can keep his head together, he'll be a star :)

IS FUCIN RIGHT SAMMYA LA -PENANNY WIL BE AREVELANT THIS SEASNNO

Great to have an outlet ball, we've missed that as much as anything, just give it to him and let him carry it up the pitch and take the pressure off the defenders. Same goes for Gonzalez on the other side, great to have proper wingers again.

Pennant has been my favourite non-Liverpool player for three seasons now, since I watched him tear us up at Elland Road a few seasies back. Sat in the first row, I was amazed how quick his feet were, and how much influence he was having, and responsibility he was taking for a teenager. Nothing I have seen since has caused me to doubt his ability.

Besides, Wenger, ahem, knows a thing or two about kids, and if he was willing to pay 2mill for a fifteen year old, I'd reckon he'd probably be pretty good.

If he keeps his head down (but looks up), he will be a fanatastic player for us, and a regular international come seasons end.

And Mcmanananananannanannanaanannaannaman was an amazing player for us. Shame he never got to play in a great Liverpool side.

I've got a bet on with a mate that he will be in the England squad by Christmas.

Don't really think so. McManaman's main job was beating players. Think Pennant will just look to get crosses in as opposed to going by his opponents (in most circumstances). We've filled the right mid gap undoubtedly, however I wouldn't class him as McManaman's successor by any means.

If Pennant keeps his head screwed on he will be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

His ability is exceptional - he was possibly the most highly rated youngster of his age group. I think god's point is a good one, that with Pires and Ljunberg in front of him he never got the chances under Wenger. Rafa's in a much better position to benefit.

But...he has a wild streak a mile wide, and intractable attitude problems have done for better players down the years. Collymore springs to mind.

Early signs are all good though...

another very impressive thing i've noticed about Pennant which seems to have been overlooked is his ability to bring the ball under control instantly.. just watch him next time we play - gets the ball, one touch under control and then he's off.. fkin sound..

I noticed that too. Great close ball control.

Many here, myself included, were disappointed when we failed to sign Alves, but hopefully after a few more good performances from Pennant we'll forget all about him.

In all honesty I preferred Pennant personally.

I wanted Rafa to get Alves because he was his first choice, but if the dilemma was between him and Pennant plus a top striker there really was no decision to be made for me.

I was one of those who stuck their necks out and said Pennant would be brilliant here, a lot were quite scathing about his signing; but it's looking promising so far anyway, although there is a long way to go still for the young lad...

Loved him for the first goal, he pulled the defender to the right and stayed there, could have easily moved in field but the option will always be there when he plays.
