Liverpool sell midfielder Cheyrou

Cheyrou struggled to force his way into Liverpool's first team

Liverpool midfielder Bruno Cheyrou has joined Rennes for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old ex-France international has spent the last two seasons on loan to Marseille and Bordeaux, despite being on Liverpool's books.

And on Friday he finally ended his association with Anfield permanently after agreeing terms with Rennes.

Cheyrou was a £4.5m signing from Lille by former Reds manager Gerard Houllier but struggled to make his mark in the English top flight.

He made a total of 48 appearances, scoring five goals.

Damn, had high hopes for him after his fabled performances against Lazio. Has anyone ever seen Bruno and Lazio in the same room? Starting to wonder if it ever happened. Stevie H will be gutted.

I've got some friends who live in and around Rennes, Merdrignac, Broons etc and one of them said yesterday that the word there was it could amount to about £2.5m - just checked L'Equipe and nthey've got nothing re the amount.

Still, one down....:)

£2.5m !!!! I choose to believe that, however improbable it sounds. That would make another player, surplus, to requirements, Pongolle, worth about £10m, or Traore worth £6m.

Traore worth £6m.

Cheap for a Champions league winner. Consider what that shower, has just paid for a Championship defender.

I was there - with my Cheyrou away shirt, that hasn't been worn since.

I suppose given they're flush with the Kallstrom money and that Cheyrou still has a decent reputation over there £2.5m (it may be structured too) is not out of the question.

I was at the Lazio game. He had a decent shot that almost dipped in under the bar and passed it a few times. We lost 1-0 and that was it.

Where he gets this legend about his wonderful performance V Lazio is beyond me, total internet myth.

£2.5 million, do they need a tough tackling headless chicken Senegalese midfielder?

Ahead of you - have already e-mailed the question about him and a keeper made of glass! :)

He did play well that day Murph. The Kop took to him, but it was only a friendly against a side who weren't gonna play competitively for another month.

Anyway, thanks for the Chelsea goal Bruno.

Hey, I've got friends who live out there and that's what they said - no idea how accurate it is, just passing it on but I don't think it's a ridiculous amount for a 'home' player from their perspective. Just 'cos we think he's crap because he didn't cut it here doesn't mean they think the same way.

He did well for Bordeaux - was a starting midfielder for them, along with Smicer - and Bordeaux ended up second in the league behind Lyon, so I'm guessing that his reputation on home soil is significantly better than over here. £2.5m still sounds kinda crazy (mind you 3m euros for Diarra...).

he spent one season with marseille where he played about a dozen games and then spent most of last season on bordeaux's bench. i don't know where your friends in france heard £2.5m fyds, but it sounds like rubbish to be honest.

While agreeing that I doubt we've got a penny for him, he started 22 of Bordeaux's 38 league games and came on as a substitute in 4 others.
