Redders off the mark 1991 - Jamie Redknapp scored his first reds goal as we held Southampton to a 1-1 League draw at The Dell. Alan Shearer had put the home side ahead with the first of his eight goals against the reds. In comes Igor 2000 - Igor Bišcan signed from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m. The big Croat helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield in 2001, and the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role in our Champions League triumph in 2005. He left for Panathinaikos in July 2005 after three goals in 118 reds games. 1897 – Right-back General Stevenson signed from Padiham, playing 22 times without scoring before joining Barnsley in June 1900. 1936 – South African keeper Dirk Kemp signed from Transvaal, although he only played thirty senior and ten Wartime games for the reds. 1905 – Scottish left-back David Murray was sold to Leeds City for £130. He had arrived from Everton on a free transfer in August 1904, helping us to clinch the Second Division title, playing fifteen senior games. Buchan-eering 1912 - Charlie Buchan scored five goals for Sunderland as they thrashed us 7-0 in a top-flight fixture at Roker Park, his first strikes past us. Three of his goals came in the final ten minutes when left-back Donald McKinlay had gone off injured and dusk had fallen. This remains the most ever scored by one player in a match against the reds. He in fact scored a total of eighteen times against the reds in his Sunderland career, as well as another three when with Arsenal, and bagged a treble in the reverse fixture later that season. Jackie Mordue netted one of his six goals past us, with Harry Martin also netting. The perfect group 2021 – We became the first English side to win all six UEFA Champions League group games in a season by winning 2-1 at AC Milan, despite falling behind to a Fikayo Tomori goal. Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi struck either side of half time as Sadio Mané played his fiftieth game in the competition for the reds, with forward Max Woltman debuting as a late substitute. We progressed all the way to the Final in Paris that campaign. Centre-backs at each end 2013 – We beat West Ham United 4-1 at Anfield, going ahead through a Guy Demel own goal just before the break. Mamadou Sakho bagged his first reds goal before Martin Škrtel put through his own net. However, Luis Suárez struck twice to secure the victory. Glen Johnson took over the captain’s armband when Steven Gerrard was substituted early in the second half, while Kevin Nolan was sent off for the visitors late on. Humbled by the Dutch 1966 - We suffered our record European defeat, losing 5-1 to a Johann Cruyff-inspired Ajax in a European Cup Second Round first leg tie at the fog-bound Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, with Chris Lawler grabbing our last-minute consolation. In fact, the pitch was so foggy that Shanks was even able to wander on to give instructions to half-back Willie Stevenson without the officials noticing him! He famously decreed that the reds would turn things around in the second leg, but it was not to be, as we only drew 2-2. Cruyff was amongst the scorers, with Klaas Nuninga bagging a brace and Cornelis De Wolf and Hendrik Groot also on the scoresheet. Also recently 2019 – We won 3-0 at Bournemouth to move eleven points clear at the top of the table. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keïta struck before the break, with Mohamed Salah on target in the second half. Centurions 1963 - Ian Callaghan was on target in his hundredth reds game as we drew 1-1 at Arsenal. Joe Baker equalised with the first of his four goals against the reds. 1974 – Ray Clemence played his 200th League game for us as we were held to a 2-2 draw by Derby County at Anfield. Ray Kennedy and Steve Heighway bagged our goals inside the first quarter of the match. Substitute Roger Davies netted one of his five goals past us, with Jeff Bourne also scoring. Wolves win again 1946 - Wolverhampton Wanderers won for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, interrupted by the war, going home with a 5-1 victory in this clash of the top two in the League. Wallasey-born Dennis Westcott scored four first-half goals for Wolves and had another strike wrongly ruled out for offside, with Jack Balmer nabbing our consolation from the spot. Remarkably, Westcott also grabbed four goals in his next game, against Bolton Wanderers. These were the last of his nine strikes past us. Nicol the winner 1996 - Steve Nicol was on the winning side for Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, when Guy Whittingham struck the only goal of the game. Nicol got a nasty elbow in the face from Neil Ruddock during this game. Happy birthdays 1949 – Former reserve team boss John McMahon, Steve’s brother, was born in Manchester. He played more than 250 League games for Preston North End, also playing for Wigan Athletic and Tranmere Rovers before moving into coaching with Rovers and then Shrewsbury Town. He was in charge of the reserves between June 2009 and March 2011. 1972 - Sean Dundee was born in Durban. He arrived at Anfield for £1.8m in June 1998, but only made five appearances off the bench before leaving for VfB Stuttgart for £1m a year later. Off the mark quickly 1935 - Bob Glassey scored five minutes into his reds bow as we beat Preston North End 2-1 at Anfield. Jack Balmer nabbed our other goal, also his first reds strike. Bud Maxwell netted one of his seven goals against us. A lowly record 1895 - We recorded our lowest ever League attendance at Anfield, with just 1,000 turning up to see Frank Becton net the only goal of our Second Division encounter with Loughborough Town. Scottish reds 1965 - Ron Yeats won his second and final cap for Scotland as they beat Italy 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Naples. 1938 - Preston North End’s Bill Shankly won his fourth cap as the Scots beat Hungary 3-1 in a friendly at Ibrox. Full-back Andy Beattie, who guested for the reds during the war and later joined our backroom staff, won his seventh and final official cap for the Scots in the same game. Against the Irons We have twice entertained West Ham United at Anfield on this day. 1957 - Billy Liddell netted in our 1-1 Second Division draw. 1968 - We won 2-0 in the top flight, thanks to goals from Emlyn Hughes and Peter Thompson. Thumping the Villa 1985 - Jan Mølby, Paul Walsh and Craig Johnston all netted as we beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield. 1907 - We beat them even more comprehensively in another First Division meeting, with Robert Robinson and Jack Parkinson both netting twice and Arthur Goddard also on the scoresheet in a 5-0 victory. Forward Joe Hewitt reached a century of reds games that day. Derby despair 1992 - We lost 2-1 at Goodison Park in front of the Sky cameras, with Mark Wright opening the scoring. Mo Johnston equalised almost immediately, before ex-red Peter Beardsley struck the winner after being played in by fellow ex-red Gary Ablett to become only the second player to score for both sides in this fixture. Also in Europe 2000 - Emile Heskey and Nick Barmby struck as we beat Olympiacos 2-0 at Anfield to reach the Fourth Round of the UEFA Cup, 4-2 on aggregate. Irish English 1932 – Future reds forward Sam English netted his only goal for Northern Ireland while winning his second and final cap as they lost 4-1 to Wales in the British International Championships in Wrexham, with reds keeper Elisha Scott also on the losing side. Future red Ernie Blenkinsop played for England as they beat Austria 4-3 in a friendly at Stamford Bridge on the same day. 2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah scored for Egypt Under-23’s in their 3-2 defeat by Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations Semi-final in Marrakesh. Another big win 1918 - We thumped Oldham Athletic 5-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield, thanks to two apiece from Donald McKinlay and Thomas Green, and a goal from Harold Wadsworth. Other reds games 2002 – We lost 2-0 to Charlton Athletic at The Valley thanks to goals from Jason Euell and future red Paul Konchesky. 1929 – Gordon Hodgson opened the scoring but Burnley beat us 3-1 at Anfield. George Beel netted the last two of his eight goals against the reds, with Louis Page bagging one of his seven past us. 1901 – Sam Raybould struck as we were beaten 2-1 at Sheffield United. Alf Common scored the first of his five goals against us, with Walter Bennett scoring one of his four. Young reds in opposition 2000 - John Welsh and Mark Peers played for England Under-16’s as they lost 2-0 to France at The Valley, with future red Anthony Le Tallec bagging one of the goals. Management moves 1987 – It was announced that Peter Robinson had extended his contract as Club Secretary until 1995. 2005 - Steve McMahon quit as Perth Glory boss, following a combination of media speculation, poor transfer signings, the team’s indifferent form and an apparent disagreement with the board. 2008 – John Barnes managed Jamaica as they were held to a 1-1 draw in the Digicel Caribbean Championships in Trelawny by Trinidad & Tobago. 2015 - Nigel Clough was appointed Manager of Burton Albion for a second time, having been in charge originally between October 1998 and January 2009. Also moving on 2020 – Ex-reds forward Mario Balotelli signed for Serie B side Monza Brianza 1912, scoring six times in fourteen games. Missing out 2017 – Ex-red Luis Suárez was voted into thirteenth place in the Ballon d’Or, with Sadio Mané coming 23rd and Philippe Coutinho 29th as Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo won for the fifth time.

Feliz aniversario 1987 - Brazilian central midfielder Lucas Leiva was born in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul. He made 346 senior appearances after signing from Grêmio for a reported £5m in May 2007, notching just seven times before moving on to S.S. Lazio for £5m in July 2017. He bagged a brace for Brazil in the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” on his twentieth birthday, as they beat Peru 2-1 in a group match in Paraguay. Other births and deaths 1962 - Ray Houghton was born in Glasgow. He signed from Oxford United for £825,000 in October 1987, going on on to strike 38 times in 202 reds games, helping us to two League titles, two FA Cups and the FA Charity Shield before moving to Aston Villa for £900,000 in July 1992. 1985 - Ex-reserves forward Mark Smyth was born in Liverpool. He made his senior debut as a substitute in our Carling Cup victory at Tottenham Hotspur in December 2004 but was released in July 2005. 2018 – Keeper Tommy Lawrence died. ‘The Flying Pig’ signed professional terms in October 1957 and played 390 times for us, winning two League title medals and an FA Charity Shield as well as being a member of the 1965 FA Cup winning side. He left the club in November 1971 to join Tranmere Rovers. 2022 – Former Club Secretary and Chief Executive Peter Robinson died aged 86. He joined the club in 1865, retiring in 2000. Supersub arrives 1974 - David Fairclough signed on as a professional. He bagged 55 goals in 154 reds games, two-fifths of which were from off the bench. The bionic carrot helped us to three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two League Cups before moving on to Luzern in July 1983. 1970 – Winger Hughie McAuley turned pro. He was a regular for the reserves but did not make a senior appearance before moving to Plymouth Argyle in October 1974, He returned to the club in 1988 as a coach at the Academy. 2007 - Daniele Padelli signed on loan from Sampdoria. He made one senior appearance, as we were held to a 2-2 draw in our final League game of the season at home to Charlton Athletic in May 2007. However, he was not kept on. Reds farewells in a rout 2007 - We were beaten 6-3 at Anfield by Arsenal in our rearranged Carling Cup Fifth Round meeting, the first time we had conceded half a dozen at home since April 1930. This was our ninth meeting with the Gunners in this competition, making them our most frequent League Cup opponents. Júlio Baptista scored four goals and had a penalty saved by Jerzy Dudek. Luis García came on as a substitute and was later himself replaced, in what was to be his 121st and final reds game. Stephen Warnock played his 67th and last reds match with Lee Peltier appearing for the fourth and final time, while Robbie Fowler scored his final goal for us from open play, with Steven Gerrard and Sami Hyypiä also on target. Gerrard’s strike was our 400th in the competition. Jérémie Aliadière and Alex Song also netted for the visitors. 1904 – Inside-forward Fred Buck played his thirteenth and final reds game in our 2-1 defeat at The Wednesday. Sam Raybould struck our goal. Jimmy Stewart scored the first of his five goals past us, with Tommy Crawshaw also on target. 1946 – Defender Fred Finney made his second and last senior reds appearance as we beat Chester 2-0 in an FA Cup Third Round second leg at Anfield to progress 4-0 on aggregate, with Willie Fagan nabbing a brace. The king back in charge 2011 – Kenny Dalglish took charge of the reds for the first time in his second spell in the hot seat. Steven Gerrard was sent off as we lost our FA Cup Third Round match 1-0 at Manchester United, thanks to a controversial early penalty, converted by Ryan Giggs, the last of his five goals past us. Ryan Babel played his 146th and final reds game and was later admonished for tweeting a photo of referee Howard Webb mocked up in a United shirt. First and last outings 2022 – Kaide Gordon equalised with his first reds goal as we beat Shrewsbury Town 4-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield. Fabinho converted a penalty to hand us a half-time lead, adding a late second after Roberto Firmino had netted. Melkamu Frauendorf debuted, with fellow midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner appearing for the third and last time. We went on to lift the trophy for the eighth time that season. More arrivals 2004 - Paul Jones signed on loan from Southampton, due to injuries to both Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland. He went straight into the first team to face Aston Villa at Anfield the next day, but only played once more before moving permanently to Wolverhampton Wanderers for £250,000 later that month. 1997 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme signed from Rosenborg BK on a free transfer. He went on to make 54 reds appearances without scoring, but was not the defensive missing link we were searching for. 1936 - Outside-right Billy Hartill signed from Everton, but only played four times before joining Bristol Rovers as part of the deal that brought Phil Taylor to Anfield two months later. Albert Stubbins was the man for me 2003 - The funeral of Albert Stubbins took place. The great centre-forward struck 83 times in 178 reds matches after signing from Newcastle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War. He was also the only footballer to appear on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, and became a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade. On the way to Wembley 1965 - We started our first victorious FA Cup campaign when we visited fellow top-flight outfit West Bromwich Albion for our 200th game in the competition. The kick-off was delayed by twenty minutes due to heavy traffic, and Roger Hunt opened the scoring shortly before the break. Ian St. John added a second after Jeff Astle had a goal chalked off for the home side. Ron Yeats gave away a penalty with thirteen minutes to go, picking the ball up in the area as he believed the referee had blown for a foul. Fortunately, Bobby Cram, athlete Steve’s uncle, stroked the kick wide. Jeff Astle finally notched for the Baggies, one of his seven goals against the reds, but we held on to win 2-1. An unwelcome European first 1968 - We suffered our first ever home defeat in Europe as Hungarian side Ferencvárosi won 1-0 in the Fairs Cup Third Round second leg in snowy conditions, to send us crashing out 2-0 on aggregate. A new record signing 1985 – Seventeen-year-old forward Wayne Harrison signed from Oldham Athletic for £250,000, then a record fee for a teenager, although he never made a senior reds appearance before having to retire due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. 2009 – Icelandic reserves midfielder Victor Pálsson signed from AGF Århus. He failed to break through to the first team, moving on to Hibernian in January 2011. 2024 – Czech keeper Vítězslav Jaroš signed a new contract, joining Sturm Graz on loan on the same day. He helped them to claim the Austrian League and Cup double. 300 up in the cup 1963 – Roger Hunt bagged our 300th FA Cup goal as he opened the scoring in our 3-0 win at Wrexham in the Third Round. Kevin Lewis and Jimmy Melia also netted. Another Welsh treble 1990 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick, which included our 7,000th goal in all competitions, as we trounced Swansea City 8-0 in an FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield, just three days after being held to a goalless draw in the first game at Vetch Field. Alan Hansen played his 600th reds game as John Barnes added a brace with Ronnie Whelan, Peter Beardsley and Steve Nicol all also on the scoresheet. We reached the Semi-final that season before going out to Crystal Palace. Disappointment on the south coast We have twice visited Southampton on this day in history, failing to win on both occasions. 2002 - We lost 2-0 at the Friends Provident St. Mary’s Stadium, our first visit there. John Arne Riise put through his own net with James Beattie also on the scoresheet. 1926 - We were held to a goalless draw at The Dell in an FA Cup Third Round tie, winning the Anfield replay before being knocked out at Fulham at the next hurdle. This was the third consecutive season we had been paired with the Saints in the cup. Trotters again 1954 - We lost 1-0 at Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup Third Round, a week after our previous game, a 2-1 top-flight defeat to the same side at Anfield. Willie Moir struck the last of his five goals against the reds as right-half Phil Taylor played his 343rd and final reds game. The new Anfield? 2003 - Chief Executive Rick Parry announced at the club’s AGM at Anfield that the proposed new stadium would hold 60,000, five thousand more than originally thought, while Gérard Houllier gave a rousing speech to shareholders. Work on a new stadium was later shelved in favour of redeveloping Anfield. Beating the Blues We have twice won at Goodison Park on this day in history. 1932 - Gordon’s Gunson and Hodgson netted in a 2-1 FA Cup Third Round victory after we had gone behind to one of Dixie Dean’s nineteen derby strikes inside the first minute. However, we went out to Chelsea in the Sixth Round. 1943 - We had previously won 3-1 in a Wartime League fixture. Michael Hulligan struck a brace, with Arthur Shepherd also notching. The Wright man in charge 2002 - Mark Wright was appointed Manager of Chester City. He was in charge for two and a half years before resigning following rumours of an affair with one of his player’s wives. On the move 2023 – Ex-loanee centre-half Steven Caulker joined Wigan Athletic on a free transfer from Fatih Karagümrük until the end of the campaign. He played nine times for the Latics. 2021 – Keeper Andy Lonergan signed for West Bromwich Albion. He had spent the 2019/20 season with the reds, failing to make a senior appearance, also not playing for the Baggies’ first team. 2020 – Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza was sold to Clube Atlético Mineiro for £3.2m, having not managed to break through at Anfield. He had arrived from Internacional for a reported £0.5m in September 2015, spending most of his time out on loan due to work permit issues. 2015 – Ex-reserves winger Adam Hammill joined Rotherham United on loan from Huddersfield Town, playing fourteen times for the Millers without scoring. On the same day, Xherdan Shaqiri joined Internazionale from Bayern München for €15m, having helped the Germans to claim to Bundesliga titles, the DFB-Pokal, DFL-Supercup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. 2014 – Reserves full-back Ryan McLaughlin joined Barnsley on loan, playing nine times for the Tykes. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward David Amoo joined Tranmere Rovers from Preston North End on a free transfer, netting once in eleven senior outings. On the same day, Andre Wisdom signed a new contract with the reds. 2009 - Porto bought sixty per cent of the rights to left-back Aly Cissokho from Vitória de Setúbal for €300,000, after just seventeen games for the team from southern Portugal. 1986 - Ex-reserves forward Mike Newell joined Luton Town from Wigan Athletic for £100,000. He bagged nineteen goals in 68 games for the Hatters, helping them to seventh in the top flight in his one full season at Kenilworth Road, their best ever League finish. Other reds games 1999 – We held Arsenal to a goalless draw at Arsenal. 1993 – John Barnes put the reds in front as we lost 2-1 to Aston Villa at Anfield, with Garry Parker scoring before Dean Saunders nabbed the last of his four goals against the reds prior to signing for us. 1988 – Our FA Cup Third Round tie ended goalless at Stoke City in the mud and rain, with the home side wasting a glorious chance late on as we eventually made it all the way to Wembley. 1971 – We drew 2-2 with Blackpool in L4, with Steve Heighway scoring and John Craven deflected a Heighway cross into his own goal. 1960 – We beat Leyton Orient 2-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield, with Roger Hunt heading in after just 45 seconds, nabbing a last-minute winner after the O’s had drawn level through Ronnie Foster. 1937 – Berry Nieuwenhuys gave the reds the lead, but Pat Glover scored before Alf Hobson put through his own net as we lost 2-1 at Grimsby Town. 1915 – We beat Stockport County 3-0 in an FA Cup Third Round encounter at Anfield. Joseph McMain had opened the scoring after just a minute. Wolves had to play the second half a man down due to an injury to George Eccles. 1895 – Jimmy Ross bagged the only goal of the game at Derby County, a match that had been due to be played before Christmas but had to be postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. This was our only trip to their old County Ground. In international action 1985 – Ex-red Avi Cohen and future red Ronnie Rosenthal both featured in Israel’s 2-0 friendly defeat by Greece in Jaffa. 2010 – Ex-red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon in their 3-1 friendly win in Kenya. 2019 – Future red Takumi Minamino played for Japan as they beat Turkmenistan 3-2 in an AFC Asian Cup group game in Abu Dhabi. 2023 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they beat Sudan 2-0 in a friendly in Tunisia. 2024 – Song managed Cameroon to a 1-1 friendly draw with Zambia in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, ex-red Takumi Minamino netted as Japan thrashed Jordan 6-1 in an unofficial meeting in Qatar. Missing out 2012 - Luis Suárez was voted into sixth place in the FIFA Ballon d’Or for 2011, with ex-red Xabi Alonso coming sixteenth as Barcelona’s Lionel Messi claimed the trophy for the third consecutive year. 2017 – Ex-red Suárez was named in the FIFPRO World11.

Aldo’s record 1987 - John Aldridge scored in his tenth consecutive League game, including one from the previous season, netting from the spot as we beat Queens Park Rangers 4-0 at Anfield. Craig Johnston had a goal chalked off but also scored, while John Barnes bagged a brace. This goalscoring run remains a joint top-flight record, for any club, and took him to twelve goals already that season. Ex-red Ian Rush was watching in the crowd. Later that day, Kenny Dalglish, Peter Robinson and Chairman John Smith met with Ray Houghton and his wife at a Southport restaurant to agree to his £825,000 transfer from Oxford United, which was finalised two days later. A Euro thumping 2017 – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bagged his first reds goal as we trounced Maribor 7-0 in Slovenia, our best ever away win in Europe and the joint record away victory in the UEFA Champions League. Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah scored twice each, with Philippe Coutinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold also scoring. Mo’s ton up 2020 – We drew 2-2 at Everton behind closed doors with Sadio Mané giving us an early lead before Michael Keane levelled. Mohamed Salah reached a century of reds goals before Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised. Richarlison was dismissed for the home side right at the death for a late tackle on Thiago Alcântara which ruled him out for more than two months. Jordan Henderson had a very late winner cruelly ruled out for offside by VAR, but the game was marred by Jordan Pickford’s wild challenge resulting in a serious injury to Virgil van Dijk Triple centurions 2009 – Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun and Javier Mascherano all reached a century of reds appearances as we lost 1-0 at Sunderland to the freak ‘beach ball’ goal, as Pepe Reina was wrong-footed by a fifth-minute Darren Bent strike that should have been ruled out, one of his five goals against us to date. Ex-red Bolo Zenden and future red Jordan Henderson both featured for the home side. 1896 – We lost a top-flight fixture at Sunderland’s Newcastle Road ground by the odd goal in seven, having gone in 3-0 down at the break. Full-back Archie Goldie struck his only reds goal before we then fell 4-1 behind, with Donald Gow scoring an own goal for the reds and George Allan also on target late on to make the score slightly more respectable. Jimmy Hannah and Andrew Hamilton struck twice apiece for the home side. 1990’s Euro trips 1995 - Mark Wright excelled as we held Brøndby IF to a goalless draw in Denmark, although we lost the Anfield return 1-0 to crash out of the UEFA Cup at the Second Round stage. 1996 - Robbie Fowler and John Barnes netted as we beat Sion 2-1 after falling behind to a Christophe Bonvin strike in Switzerland at the same stage of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. We went as far as the Semi-final that year, after winning the Anfield return 6-3. Onto the Heighway 1970 - Steve Heighway netted his first reds strike to complete a 2-0 top-flight victory over Burnley at Anfield after Ron Yeats had opened the scoring just before half time with his sixteenth and last goal for the club. In and out 1919 – Inside-right Fred Pagnam was sold to Arsenal for £1,500. He had signed from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games, keeping up his remarkable strike-rate with the Gunners. 1923 – Inside-forward Harry Lewis left for Hull City after twelve goals in seventy outings and 57 strikes in 101 wartime games, having helped us to claim the League title in 1922. 1953 – Welsh forward Tony Rowley signed from Stourbridge. He bagged a treble on his debut, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. He moved to Third Division Tranmere Rovers in March 1958, continuing to score at a rate of one goal every other game. 1974 – Reserves winger Hughie McAuley moved on to Plymouth Argyle. He turned professional in January 1970, returning to work with the club’s Academy in June 1990, taking up several roles until leaving in the summer of 2009. Management no more 2007 - Sammy Lee and Frank McParland both left Bolton Wanderers by mutual consent. Sammy had been in charge for just fourteen matches, although he had only led them to three victories. 1994 - 1950’s wing-half Keith Burkinshaw was sacked as Manager of West Bromwich Albion. He had been in charge for sixteen months, as the Baggies struggled to stay in the First Division. Loaned out 2000 - Erik Meijer joined Preston North End on loan. He made nine appearances while at Deepdale, but failed to get on the scoresheet. 2002 – Right-back Glen Johnson joined Millwall on loan from West Ham United. He played eight times for the Lions before returning to establish himself in the first eleven at Upton Park. Bye bye Berry for now 1908 - Arthur Berry played the third and final game of his first spell as a reds player as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Woolwich Arsenal. Ronald Orr and Joe Hewitt were both on the scoresheet, with Tom Chorlton missing a penalty. Ex-red Charlie Satterthwaite was on target for the Gunners, with David Neave nabbing one of his four strikes past us. Kenny for his country King Kenny has played for Scotland three times on this day over the years. 1973 - He won his twelfth cap while still with Celtic as they won 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Czechoslovakia. 1979 - Dalglish captained the side as they were held 1-1 at Hampden Park by Austria in a European Championships qualifier. Graeme Souness and future red John Wark played behind him in that game. 1984 - He won his 95th cap as Scotland beat Iceland 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier. Steve Nicol won his second cap in that game, as ex-red Graeme Souness skippered the side. International reds on target 1990 - Gary McAllister, then still with Leeds United, scored his first Scotland goal in his fifth international game, as they beat Switzerland 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park. Steve Nicol also featured in this game. On the same day, ex-red John Aldridge netted a treble, including a penalty, as the Republic of Ireland beat Turkey 5-0 at Lansdowne Road. Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton both also played. Meanwhile, Ian Rush bagged his first goal for Wales in his second spell as a reds player in their 3-1 win over Belgium in Cardiff in another qualifier. Future red Dean Saunders was also on the scoresheet. Peter Beardsley netted in England’s 2-0 defeat of Poland at Wembley, with John Barnes and future red Mark Wright also featuring. Future red Istvan Kozma also featured in qualifying action that day. 2023 - Dominik Szoboszlai struck his first goal as a reds player, scoring from the spot as he captained his country in their 2-2 European Championships qualifying draw with Lithuania in Kaunas. Luis Díaz had a penalty saved as Colombia shared a goalless draw with Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier in Quito, while Darwin Núñez converted a spot-kick as Uruguay beat Brazil 2-0 in another qualifier in Montevideo. On the same day, Jayden Danns, Wataru Endō, Ibrahima Konaté, Lewis Koumas, Alexis Mac Allister, Calum Scanlon and ex-reds Jordan Henderson and Takumi Minamino were all also in international action, with Steve Clarke and Bernard Diomède taking charge of their countries. 2017 – Rhian Brewster converted in a penalty shoot-out as England Under-17’s beat Japan 5-3 following their goalless World Championship Finals Round of 16 game in India, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2015 – Herbie Kane played as England Under-17’s drew 1-1 with Guinea in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia as Cooper was again the boss. 2010 – Future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil each struck twice for Germany Under-17’s as they thumped Bosnia-Herzegovina 6-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Estonia. 2007 - Steve Finnan struck his second and final goal for the Republic of Ireland, and only one as a reds player, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cyprus in a Euro 2008 qualifier at Croke Park in Dublin, with future red Robbie Keane also featuring. 1979 - Ex-red Kevin Keegan was on the scoresheet in England’s 5-1 European Championships qualifying win in Northern Ireland, with Terry McDermott, Phil Neal and Phil Thompson all also playing. First and last caps 1979 - Ex-red John Toshack won his fortieth and final cap for Wales as they were thumped 5-1 by West Germany in a European Championships qualifier in Cologne. Ex-red Joey Jones also played. Steve Heighway was also picked for a qualifier that day, as the Republic of Ireland beat Bulgaria 3-0 at Lansdowne Road. 1984 - Michael Robinson won his last cap as a reds player as the Republic of Ireland lost 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Norway. Half a century high 2007 - Andriy Voronin won his fiftieth cap for the Ukraine as they thumped the Faroe Islands 5-0 in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Kyiv. Meanwhile, future red Christian Poulsen also reached half a century as Denmark beat Latvia 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Copenhagen. Into the hall of fame 2007 - It was announced that Peter Beardsley and Graeme Souness were to be inducted into the Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. Beardsley won two League titles, the FA Cup, and two FA Charity Shields while at Anfield, as well as 59 England caps and a ‘new’ Second Division title with Fulham. Souness claimed five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields while with the reds, also winning 54 Scottish caps, a Second Division championship, Coppa Italia and Scottish League title as a player. 2022 - Sadio Mané was voted second in the Ballon d’Or, behind only Karim Benzema from Real Madrid. An international debut 1956 - Alan A’Court won the first of his seven caps for England Under-23’s as they were held to a goalless draw by France at Ashton Gate. Joe departs 2006 - Centre-half Joe Maloney died. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in January 1951, but only made twelve senior appearances before moving to Shrewsbury Town in July 1954, for whom he played 237 League games.
