Defensive recruits 2015 – Centre-half Joe Gomez signed from Charlton Athletic for £3.5m. He has made 224 senior appearances up to the end of the 2023/24 season without scoring, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup. 2001 - John Arne Riise signed from AS Monaco for £4m. He netted 31 times in his 348 first-team appearances, at either left-back or on the left side of midfield but left for Roma for the same fee he was signed for in June 2008. He helped us to claim the Champions League, FA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields. Moving on 1972 - Alun Evans was sold to Aston Villa for £72,000. He had become the first £100,000 teenager four years earlier when arriving at Anfield from Wolverhampton Wanderers, our new record signing. He netted 33 times in his 111 first team appearances for the reds before moving to Villa Park. 1955- Full-back Frank Lock was sold to Watford. He had signed from Charlton Athletic for £7,500 on Christmas Day 1953, playing 42 times without scoring. 1901 – Right-back Don McCallum signed from Queen’s Park, but only made two senior appearances before moving on to Morton in May 1903. European ban 1985 - UEFA banned Liverpool from European competition for three years, on top of the overall English ban, following the shameful events at Heysel three weeks earlier. However, this was later reduced to just one year. Final caps 2007 - Scott Carson won his 29th and final cap for England Under-21’s as they fell at the penultimate hurdle in the European Championships Finals in Heerenveen. Host nation the Netherlands held them to a 1-1 draw, with no further score in extra time. The penalty shoot-out was long drawn out, finally ending 13-12 in favour of the Dutch, with both Carson and future red Ryan Babel converting their spot-kicks, and future red James Milner doing so twice. Holland went on to beat Serbia in the Final. 2013 – Pepe Reina won his last cap for Spain before joining SSC Napoli on loan as they thrashed Tahiti 10-0 in a Confederations Cup group game in Brazil. Ex-red Fernando Torres scored four times, also missing a penalty, while Sebastián Coates and Luis Suárez both also featured in the same competition that day as Uruguay beat Nigeria 2-1. 2015 - Sebastián Coates won his last cap as a reds player in Uruguay’s 1-1 draw with Paraguay in a Copa América group game in Chile, with ex-red Javier Mascherano also in action in the same tournament that day. Meanwhile, Emre Can featured for Germany Under-21’s as they beat Denmark 3-0 in the European Championships Finals in Prague. European disappointments 2000 - German and English reds crashed out of Euro 2000. Dietmar Hamann won his 27th cap as Germany lost 3-0 to Portugal in Rotterdam. On the same day, Michael Owen’s goal could not prevent Kevin Keegan’s England from succumbing 3-2 to Romania after Phil Neville conceded a last-minute penalty in Charleroi. Emile Heskey and future red Nick Barmby also featured, with ex-red Paul Ince winning his 53rd and final cap in this game. 2004 - Future reds Xabi Alonso, Fernando Morientes and Fernando Torres all played in Spain’s 1-0 defeat by host nation Portugal in Lisbon, which meant that the Spaniards missed out on reaching the knock-out phase. Future red Kolo Touré played in a World Cup qualifier on the same day, as Ivory Coast won 2-1 in Egypt. 2009 – Torres featured alongside clubmates Álvaro Arbeloa, Pepe Reina and Albert Riera as Spain set a world record of fifteen consecutive international wins, equalling Brazil’s all-time record of 35 matches unbeaten. The game was a 2-0 defeat of host nation South Africa in the Confederations Cup. On the same day, Touré won his last cap as an Arsenal player in Ivory Coast’s 3-2 win in a World Cup qualifier in Burkina Faso. Also in Europe 2016 - Martin Škrtel captained Slovakia as he won his last cap as a reds player as they held Roy Hodgson’s England to a goalless draw in Saint-Étienne, meaning both sides qualified for the knock-out phase. Joe Allen played for Wales as they beat Russia 3-0 in Toulouse in the same group to progress as group winners. Nathaniel Clyne, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge all also featured that day. 2017 – Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-21’s in their 2-2 draw with FYR Macedonia in a European Championships Finals group game in Poland. Reds for Scotland Reds have twice represented Scotland on this day in history. 1983 - Graeme Souness captained his country as they beat Canada 2-0 in a friendly in Toronto. 1990 - Gary Gillespie won his twelfth senior cap as a substitute in their 1-0 defeat by Brazil in the Stadio delle Alpi in Turin, with future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel on the winning side. This defeat ensured that the Scots again failed to progress past the first stage of the World Cup Finals. Also at the World Cup 1982 - Phil Thompson played in England’s 2-0 win over Czechoslovakia in Bilbao, their second game of the group stage. 1998 - Future red Bolo Zenden came off the bench as the Netherlands thumped South Korea 5-0 in Marseille. 1990 - Glenn Hysén skippered Sweden to a 2-1 defeat by Costa Rica in Genoa as they finished bottom of their group without a point. 1994 - Cláudio Taffarel appeared as Brazil beat Russia 2-0 in a group game in Stanford, USA. 2006 - Steven Gerrard and future red Joe Cole were on target as England were held to a 2-2 draw by Sweden in Cologne, with Jamie Carragher, Peter Crouch and ex-red Michael Owen all also featuring. Happy birthday 1964 - Ex-loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain was born in March in Cambridgeshire. He came to Anfield as cover for David James, sitting on the bench at the Coca-Cola Cup Final in 1995, and five subsequent League games, without getting onto the pitch. He is now coaching at Watford, having made 290 appearances for the Hornets. Spackers on the move 1983 - Nigel Spackman signed for Chelsea from Bournemouth for £35,000. He spent nearly four years at Stamford Bridge before joining the reds in February 1987, making 179 appearances in this first spell with the Blues. Eight in New York 1948 - We beat Kearny Celtic Scots 8-0 in a friendly in New York. Jack Balmer netted a hat-trick, with Billy Liddell and Les Shannon grabbing a brace each and Bob Priday also on target. Goalscorers on a run 1969 - Ex-red Tony Hateley scored in the seventh of all seven games of an FA Tour as England thumped Thailand 4-0 in Bangkok. He netted a total of seventeen goals on the tour. 2011 - Future red Samed Yeşil scored in his ninth consecutive Under-17's game, nabbing a brace as Germany thumped Ecuador 6-1 in a World Championships Finals group game in Mexico, with future red Emre Can captaining the side. Meanwhile, left-back Tom King played for Australia in their 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast at the same tournament. On the same day, ex-red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina in their 4-0 friendly defeat of Albania in Buenos Aires. Internationals on target 1997 – Future red Danny Murphy bagged a treble as England Under-20’s thumped the United Arab Emirates 5-0 in Malaysia in the World Championship Finals. Michael Owen was also on target. 2001 – Future red Maxi Rodríguez netted as Argentina came from behind to beat Egypt 7-1 in the same tournament in Buenos Aires. Daniel Sjölund was also in action earlier that day as Finland beat Jamaica 1-0 in the same stadium. 2021 - Xherdan Shaqiri scored his last two goals as a reds player as Switzerland beat Turkey 3-1 in a European Championship Finals group game in Baku, with Neco Williams, Harry Wilson, future red Federico Chiesa and ex-reds Joe Allen and Danny Ward all featuring as Wales lost 1-0 to Italy in the same group in Rome. 2023 – Luis Díaz scored as Colombia beat Germany 2-0 in a friendly in Gelsenkirchen. Sadio Mané bagged a brace, including one from the spot, while winning his last cap as a Bayern München player as Senegal beat Brazil 4-2 in Portugal. Wataru Endō and Dominik Szoboszlai both represented their countries for the last time before moving to Anfield, with this being Endō's fiftieth cap. Also in international action were Diogo Jota, Andy Robertson, future red Giorgi Mamardashvili and ex-reds Emre Can and Marko Grujić, with Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland. Forwards on the move 2006 - Ex-reds reserves forward Andy Parkinson joined Notts County on a free transfer from Grimsby Town. He bagged five goals in 73 games for the Magpies before moving to Cambridge United in July 2008. 2007 - Winger Richie Partridge signed for Chester City. He struck seven times in 68 outings before joining MK Dons in July 2009. 2014 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca. 2019 - Craig Bellamy was appointed Assistant Coach of Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht, under Vincent Kompany. He remained there until September 2021 when he stepped down due to mental health issues. Hillsborough march 2009 – The Hillsborough March4Justice to 10 Downing Street took place, taking a petition of more than 40,000 signatures to the Prime Minister. Bobby’s happy day 2017 – Forward Roberto Firmino married Larissa Pereira in Maceió, Brazil.

In comes Cody 2023 – Dutch forward Cody Gakpo signed from PSV Eindhoven for a reported initial £40m. He settled in quickly, bagging 34 goals in 106 outings in his first two years with the reds, already helping us to claim the League Cup. Yet another win 1981 - We registered our 85th consecutive home match without defeat as we beat Alliance Premier League side Altrincham 4-1 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, thanks to goals from Terry McDermott, Ray Kennedy and a Kenny Dalglish brace, with shipping clerk Graham Heathcote converting a penalty for the visitors in front of the Kop. Future Academy Manager John Owens and Zak Whitbread’s dad Barry were both on the losing side while reds legend Bill Shankly bizarrely travelled to the game on the Altrincham team coach and went into the visitors’ dressing room before the game, as part of a promotional campaign for Robinson’s Barley Water that he was involved with. We lost our next home match 2-1 to Leicester City, at the end of the month, to bring the run to an end. This was the most recent day on which both the reds and Everton have played at home at the same time, with the Blues hosting Arsenal in another cup tie. Cup glory 1976 - We knocked out the FA Cup holders in a Third Round tie at Upton Park, as goals from John Toshack and Kevin Keegan handed us a 2-0 win over West Ham United. 1987 - We also beat the Hammers when Steve McMahon netted the only goal of our League match at Anfield late on. 2009 – We won 2-0 at Preston North End, with Albert Riera opening the scoring past future reds keeper Andy Lonergan before Steve Gerrard set up Fernando Torres for a last-minute tap-in to settle any nerves. This was our 400th FA Cup game to date. On the same day, Jonjo Shelvey became the youngest ever FA Cup goalscorer, aged sixteen years and 311 days, as Charlton Athletic were held to a 1-1 draw at The Valley by Norwich City. 1999 - We won 3-0 at struggling First Division side Port Vale with Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Paul Ince on the scoresheet. Cup despair 1998 - We were humbled 3-1 by Coventry City in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield. Jamie Redknapp grabbed our consolation, our 600th in the competition. Dion Dublin bagged one of his seven goals against the reds, with Darren Huckerby and Paul Telfer also netting. 1993 - We were held 2-2 at Second Division Bolton Wanderers, with our goals coming from Ian Rush and a Mark Winstanley own goal, with John McGinlay and ex-red Mark Seagraves netting for the home side. We went on to lose the Anfield replay 2-0. Starting the new millennium badly 2000 - Chris Armstrong scored the first goal against the reds in the new millennium as we lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur. Start and end 1953 - Inside-right Sammy Smyth made his reds bow as we lost 3-1 in a top-flight game at Stoke City. Kevin Baron scored our consolation, while centre-forward Albert Stubbins appeared for the 178th and final time. Outside-left Ken Brierley also played his 61st and last reds game. Harry Oscroft struck the first two of his six goals past us, with Don Whiston also netting. 1948 - We entertained the Potters, being held to a goalless draw, when forward Jack Balmer played his 200th reds game and Scottish left-winger Doug McAvoy was making the first of just two senior reds appearances. The players were presented with their medals from the previous season’s League title-winning campaign before the match by the President of the Football League, William Cuff. 1931 - Harry Barkas made his reds debut in our 3-1 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield in the top flight. Gordon Hodgson struck a brace, with Robert Done also on target. East Anglian joy 2005 - Steve Finnan played his 400th club career game as goals from Luis García and John Arne Riise secured a 2-1 win at Norwich City, who were relegated at the end of the season. Salif Diao made his 61st and final reds outing in this match. Happy birthdays 1987 – Spanish keeper Adrián was born in Seville. He signed for free in August 2019, keeping just seven clean sheets in 26 senior games as he helped us to claim the Premier League title and UEFA Super Cup. He returned to former club Real Betis Balompié in July 2024 after his contract had expired. 1888 - Forward Arthur Berry was born in Liverpool, the son of Edwin Berry who was reds Chairman in the 1900’s. Arthur only played four first-team games in his two spells at Anfield before the First World War, as well as twice claiming Olympic Gold medals for football. 1855 - John McKenna was born in Drumcaw, County Monaghan, Ireland. He served as a Director from the formation of the club until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman. He acted as our boss for the 1895/96 season, guiding us to the Second Division title, before being replaced by Tom Watson. He was later Chairman of the Football League for two decades. Title decider? 2019 – We lost 2-1 at Manchester City, narrowing our lead at the top of the table to four points. Sergio Agüero put the home side ahead with the last of his seven goals past us after a Sadio Mané shot was within 1.1cm of crossing the line after an attempted clearance rebounded. Roberto Firmino equalised after the break. However, Leroy Sané bagged a late winner as City went on to retain the title, the latest of his four goals against us. Earlier that day, Roberto Firmino was named as winner of the Samba d’Or for 2018, an award given to the best Brazilian playing in Europe, voted for by journalists, players and fans. 2012 - We also lost 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium, with Sergio Agüero profiting from a Pepe Reina error to net his first past us. Yaya Touré headed in before Gareth Barry was dismissed and future red James Milner converted a late penalty. Incoming 1958 - Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower signed from Hibernian for £11,000. Wearside joy 1914 - We won 2-1 at Roker Park in a top-flight encounter, with Jackie Sheldon on target as Jack Parkinson scored his 128th and final reds goal. James Richardson struck the last of his five goals past us. 1959 - Johnny Wheeler, Louis Bimpson and Fred Morris netted as we beat Sunderland 3-1 at Anfield in a Second Division match, with left-winger Alan A’Court playing his 200th League game for the reds aged 24 years and 95 days, the youngest ever reds player to achieve this milestone. Roy in charge 1982 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Bristol City, moving up from Assistant. He won just three of his twenty games in charge before moving to Sweden to take over at Örebro SK. 2004 – Hodgson took charge of United Arab Emirates as they were held to a goalless draw by Qatar in the Gulf Cup of Nations in Kuwait. Crazy Horse for the three 1973 - Emlyn Hughes appeared in an unofficial international as The Three beat The Six 2-0 at Wembley Stadium. This was a ‘Common Market’ match with The Three representing Denmark, the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, while The Six featured players from Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany. 1977 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s as they beat Switzerland 3-2 in a friendly in Israel. Other reds games 1989 – Ronnie Whelan headed in the only goal of Aston Villa’s visit to Anfield. 1920 – We lost 3-2 at Sheffield United, with Stan Fazackerley bagging a brace for the Blades and Harry Johnson scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds. Tom Miller scored twice for us, with his second coming from the rebound after Harold Gough had saved his spot-kick. Moving on 2007 - Former reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan joined Rochdale on loan from Chester City, although he did not make an appearance before returning to the Deva Stadium. 2013 – Keeper Jamie Stephens moved to Welsh Premier League side Airbus UK Broughton on a temporary basis, before being released by the reds in the summer. He is now with Newport County. On the same day, Stuart Webber was appointed Head of Recruitment for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He had joined the reds as Senior National Scout in 2009, moving up to become Director of Recruitment in May 2011, before leaving in the summer of 2012. 2014 – Ex-reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević joined Charlton Athletic on loan from Standard de Liège, netting twice in 22 outings for the Addicks. 2017 – Ex-reds centre-back Stephen Sama signed for German side Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth, although he only made one League appearance, moving on to Heracles Almelo in the Netherlands in July 2018. 2018 – Midfielder Adam Phillips joined Cambridge United on loan from Norwich City, for whom he played four times. 2019 – Winger Adam Hammill joined Sc***horpe United from St. Mirren, scoring once in nineteen outings before the end of the campaign. 2020 – Midfielder Herbie Kane joined Hull City on loan, nabbing two goals in nine games for the Tigers.

A treble for Tosh 1975 - John Toshack scored a hat-trick as we beat Birmingham City 3-1 at Anfield, while Bob Hatton struck the last of his four goals past us. Lawler’s night 1978 - A testimonial match for full-back Chris Lawler was staged with the reds defeating Swansea City 3-2 at Anfield, thanks to a Kenny Dalglish brace and a strike by Graeme Souness, with Welsh rugby union star Gareth Edwards featuring for the Swans. Managing Director Ian Ayre, then aged just fourteen, took a penalty at half-time, having won a competition. Lawler made 549 appearances in sixteen years at Anfield, scoring 61 times, and helping us to two League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. Fifty for Terry 1980 – Terry McDermott’s penalty was his fiftieth reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Ipswich Town, with Frans Thijssen netting for the visitors. Double debut 1902 - Right-back Don McCallum played the first of his two reds games as we won 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion, with Sam Raybould bagging a brace and keeper Peter Platt also debuting. Mixed fortunes against the Blues 1919 - Chelsea completed the first half of their first ever League double over us, winning 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Inside-right Tom Bennett played his only official reds game, although he had struck an amazing 77 times in seventy wartime games. 1947 - More happily, Albert Stubbins, Bob Priday and Billy Liddell struck as we won 3-0 at Anfield in another First Division meeting. Heading south 1956 – Centre-half Alex South left the reds to join Halifax Town, for whom he racked up over three hundred games. He had arrived from his hometown club Brighton & Hove Albion for a £5,000 fee, joining his old boss Don Welsh at Anfield. He struck once in just seven reds appearances. Aldo for Ireland 1995 - Ex-red John Aldridge struck his final two goals for the Republic of Ireland, including a penalty, as they beat Latvia 2-0 in a Euro ’96 qualifier at Lansdowne Road. That took his tally to eight goals in four games against the men from the Baltic. Jason McAteer won his first cap as a reds player, with Phil Babb, Mark Kennedy and ex-red Steve Staunton also playing. Steve McManaman, Jamie Redknapp, ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal and future reds Nick Barmby, Stéphane Henchoz and Øyvind Leonhardsen all also featured in internationals that day, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of Switzerland. 1989 - Aldo won his first cap as a Real Sociedad player in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Northern Ireland at the same venue. This was their first ever win over their near neighbours, at the fourth attempt. Ray Houghton and Ronnie Whelan both netted, while Steve Staunton and ex-red Kevin Sheedy also featured. Leighton Clarkson, Curtis Jones and ex-reds Joe Allen, Danny Ward, Gini Wijnaldum and Harry Wilson also played for their countries. 2017 – Rhian Brewster netted as England Under-17’s beat Mexico 3-2 in the World Championship Finals in India, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both featured as Brazil beat Chile 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier on the same day. Meanwhile, ex-red Luis Suárez bagged a brace as Uruguay beat Bolivia 4-2 in Montevideo. 2016 – Ex-red Luis Suárez netted as Uruguay were held to a 2-2 draw by Colombia in a World Cup qualifier, with Sebastián Coates also playing. Final caps 2010 – Philippe Coutinho won his second and last cap while with Internazionale as Brazil beat Uruguay 2-0 in a friendly in Derby, with Lucas Leiva also in action. 2000 - Igor Bišcan won his eleventh cap, and final one as a Dinamo Zagreb player, in Croatia’s 1-1 draw with Scotland in his home city. Ex-red Don Hutchison also played.
