He frustrates, but there was a season (either Klopp's 2nd or 3rd last) when he played 12-13 games and brought a level of consistency and control that meant we went unbeaten. Fergie used to do this with the likes of Nicky Butt. Squad player who would come in for a 2-3 month spell, usually about now, and be an absolute lynchpin. Jones may be able to be more than that, but he should aim, as a minimum, to be that.

What I don't understand is where is the menace that we saw when he played for Newcastle against us. There's not many who almost bullied virgil but he gave us a torrid time and now he just looks insipid. Very little power, pace or aggression.

It's almost* always a problem when you start compensating and compromising as a team around your star player's waning powers rather than building everything through their peak powers. *Messi at the world cup probably the biggest exception but I'd argue tournament football is very different. The discipline to stick to the simplicity of Paisleys wisdom is tough, but should be non negotiable - let their legs go on somebody else's watch. This is likely to be an unseemly end to Salahs career with us. Walking away at the end of May with the league, golden boot and sweeping the player of the year prizes is how I'm going to remember Mo's proper last season.
