But apart from that.....

I'm not sure what we're doing if we get Semenyo other than to be stocking up on decent players. We've clearly brought two number 9s, albeit Hugo can drift left, and a number 10. We've spent over 300 million on these lads. Wirtz is not going to play in a midfield 3. Semenyo is a Salah replacement for a team not built around the role Salah occupies. so, given the summer we've had, if we go for Semenyo I'm not sure what direction we're heading in...

So far your options have been Zidane, Gerrard or fydsy..and I'm genuinely not sure which would be best

Don't panic! We're allowing him to have a lot of new contracts so he won't know what to do with them

Yup.. It's all weird!

Right now though we seem to have no patterns of play. There is no part of the pitch that we can point to combinations that are working and the shape and structure of the team is a major part of this. I've never been comfortable with having to shape a team around a great player's limitations. There's too much deference to the reputation of what has been at the cost of the reality of what is. Forget about what we're paying Salah. We will still get great value of of him on the pitch by asking him to fit what we need, but that may be less playing time, and my best hunch is that we all call it quits this summer for a small fee around 10-15 mil that will have covered most of the cost of extending his contract last summer when he would have left on a free. I like 4-3-1-2, with a clear plan to build around Wirtz, ekitike and Isak. They're what we have gambled the money on, not Mo. We've invested 320 million in these 3. We invested 15 million in Mo from last summer. When we are all out attack this allows Grav to drop in between the centre halves and we become 3-2-1-4. We can also overload either side, with fullbacks alternating in attack. We keep a core midfield base. If this doesn't neatly suit Gakpo and Salah, I'm alright with that. They can be rotated in to the new shape, either of them playing closer to the other player up front. What we can't do is keep hitting the same nail against the same wall to the same blunt effect. Heck you add Kerkez (and Frimpong) into the spend and we've spent over 400 million on a set of lads that fit the proposed shape much better than the old one. Time to put our shape where our money is, not where reputations or past achievements are. Think the boss has to be bold and roll the dice on this, especially making the call on Mo. If it doesn't work and he loses, we won't be much worse off than we are now, but we'll be better informed as to the limitations of him as a manager or the players we've signed or, most worryingly, both.

Win today. Match their results until January. Then it's in our hands to close the gap at their ground to 2 points. If we're 2 points behind the leaders in mid January we're in a title race. End of. Draw today and do the above and we're 4 points behind mid January. It's a title race. Lose today and do the above and we're 5 points behind.... It's still a title race. Bottom line. Whatever happens today, keep our heads and match their results until we play them. Then it's in our hands to close the gap. No matter what happens today it ain't over. -
What a great down to earth guy. And I reckon getting more and more confident and at home with each week. That little flick / dink / scoop towards the end against Madrid was only a small touch, but indicative of a player who's starting to play and believe like he belongs

To a considerable degree I'm quite relaxed about the whole thing, as well as totally annoyed about the results. We're going to come out of this knowing that we've got a guy who can lead us out of adversity and that will have been a real learning curve for him and development of the squad OR we'll figure out quite soon that he is talented, had an amazing year, but we need to move on.. Which we can do with some really talented players ready for the next guy to take it on.

Typical of such games. Decent footballers can look neat and tidy and yet lack any real potency. Largely enjoyed that half. Enjoy this tournament for as long as we're in it, but the moment we go out I forget all about it. Its all about the next 3 games. If those go badly, then it'll get ugly -

3 massive games from Saturday night. I hope they are spending all week prepping for villa, Madrid and city and are treating tonight as a huge opportunity for a lot of young lads and a free hit -
