fyds Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 What it means is we are by far the most improved and consistent team this season once the newbies had bedded in. This despite non-scoring strikers for so long and a keeper Andy Gray for one is 'unsure about' and tactics Charlie Nicholas 'cannot understand'.
crisps Posted May 5, 2006 Author Posted May 5, 2006 cant help thinking where we'd be if we had 2 excellent strikers
Jarg Armani Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 yeah but if the league had started in october i wouldn't be alive to see us getting crowned champs....frigging hate the close season, i'd definitely end it all if it was 5 months long!
CarraLegend Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Christ, imagine how good we'd be if we had a decent goalie, didnt "waste" Gerrard on the right, had two half decent strikers and didnt have a clueless manager.
crisps Posted May 5, 2006 Author Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) like to have heard grays opinion had reina had the season he's had for us in a United shirt probably be on the lines of ''I'll be stunned if Casillas starts the world cup as spains no1'' Edited May 5, 2006 by mikeyj
nrkintheuk Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Whats really strange is that teams that have to play early European qualifiers tend to start the season well because they have that extra bit of match shapness and trail off towards the end as they get tired, whereas we seem to have done the complete opposite. Hopefully next year we'll hit the ground running.
Earl Hafler Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Gotta agree with Nicholas - just what exactly is Rafa trying to achieve ?
Guest Ritchi3 Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Not only that, but there are another two records to break: their strong resolve is borne out by the fact they are on the brink of earning their 11th straight victory in all competitions - what would be a record for the club with such a glorious history. Another clean sheet would also equal the club record for 34 in all competitions across a season, a tally which could also be broken in the FA Cup final against West Ham on May 13.
Huyton_Red Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 At the start of the season Liverpool drew 4, won 2 and lost 2, only picking up 10 points from their first 8 games. In the next 27 games we picked up 69 points, if the season had stared after 8 games Liverpool would be champions. That has included two runs of 11 straight wins, one around xmas and one now, both breaking the old club record of games won on the trot. This summer we will finally buy a couple of world class goalscorers as well as a right winger. We finished 12 points behind Chelsea despite not having a striker who can score regulary, losing BOTH league games to Chelsea AND having that awful start to the season.
RP Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 We finished 12 points behind Chelsea I fancy making a few quid. What were the scores in our final league games?
Guest Cardie Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Although the signings we made were supposed to see us hit the ground running. Been a hell of a season.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 If we do finish 12 points behind Chelsea, the difference between winning the League & not, was having the double done over us by them. Reverse that & (GD aside) we could be champions. Given their form this season, that's no mean achievement
Rory Fitzgerald Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 That timeframe probably conicides with the fact that we were probably playing 1 striker up there in Crouch. Since then we have shifted to 2 up front and Crouch has settled down.

Actually during our first "run", Crouch was playing up front on his own, and we were playing the 4-2-3-1, if I remember correctly.

fyds Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 More simply I think it's to do with Crouch, Reina and Sissoko settling in in those early games - finding their metier - though Crouch did miss a few of them with suspension and injury.
Gilps Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Yowza! It should be pointed out that Man. Utd. have had an equally stonking season. Exactly. They're one genuinely great central midfield player away from being a great side. Really hope there's nothing in the Carrick and Gattuso links.

Take Chelsea out of the League & keep it simple by not redistributing their points & it's be a race to the title on Sunday btw them & us

They had an amazing start, we had a below average one but next season it's ours.
fyds Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Exactly. They're one genuinely great central midfield player away from being a great side. Really hope there's nothing in the Carrick and Gattuso links. They#ve really struggled to rebuild a proper midfield - and not just this season. One looming problem they've got is that many of the core of thier squad, Giggs, Neville, van der saar, Horseface, Scholes, and Silvestre are just beginning to creep into or toward the veteran stages. Given Slur's inability to fix his midfield or buy anyone seriously good (other than Rooney and Heinze) of late, added to possible shortish purse strings care of the Glazers, that 'decline' may yet become steadily more than wishful thinking.
muleskinner Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 They will always be a threat and will always have the ability to buy top class players. The Glazers may have saddled the club with debt for now but they are not stupid and will keep investing. Anyone who thinks they will go into some sort of irreversible decline is kidding themselves.

Unless they get a new manager in who tears the a*** out of the team and replaces them with s***, setting Man utd back 10 years or so.
