Sami Hyypia will undergo a scan at Melwood on Sunday to assess the extent of his hamstring injury that makes the Finnish international doubtful for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Benfica.

The Reds defender was forced to leave the field at half-time during the goalless draw with Charlton Athletic because of a tight hamstring, and Rafael Benitez will be hoping for good news ahead of the match with Benfica.

"Sami will have a scan on Sunday as he has a hamstring problem," confirmed Benitez. "We need to wait to see if he will be okay for the Benfica game."

I didin't notice him limping though. Perhaps he just felt it tighten and Rafa took him off. Never know.

A tight hamstring will eventually go if played on before it's fully recovered. I will be very surprised if he plays on Wednesday.

Im kind of hoping that against Benfica we have a lot of the ball, so maybe its less important for him to miss this game, despite its importance. Perhaps even Agger might bring the ball out of defence a bit better. Im sure Hyypias experience will be missed though.

Although Sami has many good attributes, he is also our most static defender so his loss against a pacey attack might not be too bad. Traore might actually be the better choice on the night if he takes his cues from Carra and uses his speed to advantage. Besides, I like many people am assuming that Benifica will grab a goal at some stage so we need to concentrate on our attack/attacking midfielders. As long as we have the full complement to choose from the loss of a defender isn't so bad.

Agger is cup tied and cannot play

Traore will have to play

Feck, forgot that. Hopefully, we'll have enough possession not to worry him too much. Lets just hope he concentrates for the full game, cos he is capable, just seems to switch off at important moments.

always thought we would need 3 goals vs Benfica - so I agree with you - Traore could be of more use ie allow us to press more knowing we have fast cover , a good performance from Traore is required, but he's well capable of that

I disagree. We ARE playing at Fortress Anfield. It is VERY unlikely they will snatch a goal.

Having said that, we should not stop if we've scored 2 - at the very least we should try to keep possession and if possible try to keep pushing ala Barcelona against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge - just on the off chance that they do manage to nick one.

What is the story with Agger at the moment? Has he picked up a knock or is it just fitness and he hasn't quite adapted yet to the pace in the PL? I know he was recovering from a somewhat lengthy injury when he arrived, so is it just match fitness?

I expected him to take more pressure off Carra and Sami when he arrived than he has so far... Still looks very classy and full of potential when he does play to be fair to the lad!
