I know people have their reservations about him because he was brought in by the yanks but he's done a pretty amazing job in a short time. We now have a higher % of our income from commercial revenue than any of our rivals in the UK. I think only Bayern beat us in that regard out of the major European clubs. The stuff about the TV channel was interesting, you forget that it's free in so many countries around the world, it really is a great marketing tool. As the article says though, the website is where the real money could be made in coming years if/when they sort out internet broadcast rights. The technology and broadband infrastructure is pretty much there ready for it to roll out now. If the big clubs can work out a deal whereby they don't have to subsidize the smaller clubs then it's game on. This sort of stuff is why the yanks are so desperate to cling on, this club is a potential goldmine if we can get the stadium built and have a little success.

The highlighted bit is where the jig is up for the gruesome twosome, that and the fact that Internet independent football broadcasting is off the menu until at least after the next TV Sky mega-deal which I think would take it to around 2018/19 - if then - which makes it way too far down the road for these two who can't meet phase one or even pay out the phase they're in etc.

However - if we get an Ambani type - with real, actual money, a real strategic plan and patience mid-term...couldn't agree more - and yes, by any stretch Ian Ayre has done an incredible job.

Amazing that we've maintained such a worldwide profile despite our relative lack of success over the last two decades.

Just another example of the complete lack of vision of the David Moores regime, even if it did mean we could see the relative lack of brand commercialisation as something that set us apart.

Unfortunately the last few years have shown that money is absolutely fundamental to success, so fair play to Ayre for apparently doing a good job.

Don't talk b******s. There's a difference between praising H&G and acknowledging what an excellent job Ayres has done. He has played no part in their unwillingness to sell the club or their f***ed up business model or terrible decisions. IN fact we would be ever more f***ed if he hadn't done such a good job.

There are distinctions to be made in our club's hierarchy and you're bright enough to see them.

Reading that hurts the eyes. What's the upshot/conclusion?

All of this is interesting and true but it feels like praising the Nazis for the Autobahns.

Nothing wrong with the Autobahns. Very efficient network...

we still won a european cup and a uefa cup during that time

If you've got a team in and around the top of the game its more about having marketable players than winning things. Owen, Gerrard and Torres are/were massive shirt shifters worldwide. As well as that we've had players who were popular in their home countries like Berger, Smicer, Hyypia, Litmanen, Riise, Kewell, Henchoz, Agger, Voronin etc.. which will help to raise the profile of the club in those countries.

Don't necessarily have to win things.

Dunno, I think there's more to it than individual players. Arsenal had Henry for 5 or 6 years who got more worldwide media exposure than most of our players put together. Milan, Inter, Barca, Real, even Chelsea over the last few years have consistently bought more high profile players than us, but we still outsell them in terms of shirts.

There is something inherently strong about the Liverpool shirt/badge/history/"brand" I think.

And Hassony, I did say 'relative' lack of success - you could argue that barring the occasional high-profile exploit we've now been "off our perch" for longer than we were ever on it.

think there's a lot more to it. chelsea hadn't shifted a single shirt or got a single marketing partner deal in south east asia until they got abramovich and won the league. now companies out here are queuing up to partner with them and they're even referred to in some stories as 'one of the english premier league's two most successful clubs'. it's nauseating.

We should have our official history DVD free to download in every language.

It's a massive plus for whoever takes over though.

The club is in good financial shape besides the owners loans, more people know this the better.

It's easy to market Liverpool.

We're only behind Real Madrid in being the biggest club in the world.

Ayres is a c*** for the rise in ticket prices this season.

Relative lack of success compared to our own standards agreed - but we've a few trophies in the last 20 years so it's hardly been completely barren.

...and you're bright enough to know he's a Hicks appointment, which leads us to the uncomfortable confusing conclusion that though much is wrong with the G & H regime, some of it has been good.

A few more years stuck as we are i would suggest not, when the Torres and Reina's have moved on, I cant see people wanting to buy Ngog, Konchesky and Poulsen on their shirt.

Why were you prepared to give Purslow the benefit of the doubt but not Ayre?
