Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has hit out at the Premier League for jeopardising their Europa League hopes.

Carragher was unhappy the Reds were forced to play West Ham on Monday night just three days before their Europa League semi-final with Atletico Madrid.

It was feared Liverpool's arduous trip to Madrid would leave Rafa Benitez's side weary for the clash with Atletico, but Carragher believes playing just 72 hours before the tie was their downfall as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the Vicente Calderon.

"The worst thing for us was playing on Monday night," Carragher told the Liverpool Echo. "You hear all about the Premier League wanting English clubs to do well in Europe.

"Well, we've just played Monday and Thursday. When Inter Milan are in the Champions League, they play on a Friday night; their league does everything to help them.

"Playing on Monday night was a joke. That was more of a thing than all the travelling we did, which, really, wasn't that bad at all."

He is absolutely right. The Italian league has moved Inter games to Friday more than once, The Spanish league ensures Barcelona play on Saturdays. The English league tells English clubs to f*** off.

Didn't we use to laugh at Mr Ferguson when he came out with this kind of stuff?

yes we did, but if it's OK for other leagues to help out their teams, surely the PL should be able to tell ESPN and FOX to change their TV games.

it's all about a fair and equal chance for all teams.

maybe we should tell Atletico to row themselves across the channel. :):)

That was the 3rd Europa league game that we had to play havng played on a monday, if all the TV fixtures were decided at the start of the season then fine, but they obviously aren't. ESPN had our game and the Spurs V Chelsea game on last weekend, wouldn't it have made more sense to swap the 2 games over once it became apparent we had a Semi FInal

TV rules our football, not the Premier League, not the FA, not the Football League. The club take their tv bounty at the start of the season and are bound to kick-off at what time they say (police safety permitting, but even they are having less say these days).

For this country to help teams in Europe, we need to reduce the number of teams in the Premiership to free off more dates, but that isn't going to happen. Other lagues do look after their teams in Europe, but that's because a lot of them have their own tv deals.

We need to revamp the kick-off times and make more Friday night games if poss, even two on a Saturday night - maybe.

Saturday 3pm for us and other teams are a thing of the past.

All parties need to get around the table and come up with something different and that includes travelling distances for the away fans, like no 12:45 ko for say Spurs v Newcastle or Sunderland. Save the early kick-offs for teams within a 50-100 mile radius maybe. Save the Bank Holiday dates for derbies.

Just do what they do in Germany and Spain and don't let the tv companies announce their fixtures so far in advance.

El Classico was down as a Sunday game until the Monday before it.

Tickets went on sale following day.

Which should only have 18 teams in it by now anyway, going by the original plan when the Premiership was launched...

Monday's game was like a training session. The problem last night was we reverted back to the cautious style we have played away all season and it didn't pay off. Rafa has been superb in managing in away games in Europe up until this season. It would have been different if Monday's game was against Man Utd or Chelsea.

Introduce Friday night football?

the UK police would never go for it.

can't they ask the Spanish police how they deal with 10pm kick offs for some of the Primera games?

The fixtures are a joke for numerous reasons, how come every other league can keep the whole league level on games played but in England it's all over the shop. It really affects the outcome of the league and needs to be sorted.

no winter break in England and and we play the FA Cup on Saturdays, virtually every other league plays cup games in midweek.

used to love those games, I had a mate who lived in Birkenhead so we'd go and have a few beers after work, grab something to eat and head to the game, then off somewhere else afterwards.

for a while I played in a Saturday morning league in Birkenhead and played many a game with a banging headache.

i worked at prenton park in the very early 90s selling programmes and golden goals, was a great time.

played in the sunday morning league there for a few years - not for the faint hearted!

I remember we used to play at siome pitches close to a social club, some of the lads on our team would have beers waiting for them at half time and ciggies handed to them during the game.

the solution's obvious - cancel all international matches

The more games the more the authorities and clubs can squeeze the fans. They don't care about the integrity of the game, it's all about money, though to be fair most of it goes in the players' back pocket.
