floyd the barber Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 ...have we seen any success from it?? So many promising youngsters have arrived at anfield, yet have we yet to see anybody really succeed...First under Houllier and now Rafa...plenty of apprently "soon to be a superstar" players have come to anfield.. The most obvious example..le gems ; le tallec and pongolle..both didnt make the grade Insua is probably is the only one to actually make it here....and thats more down to our extreme weakness as left back(not to take away insuas ability, but he isnt ready for the first team at all) We currently have what seems another promising batch including nemeth,pachecho......are they to go the same way as the rest? would it make a difference for them to actually see more first team action....see the most obvious example..Arsenal. I think its pretty awful when over the past 10 years i can think of only one player who has actually played consistently in our first team... i know if i were a promising 16-18 year old...anfield probably wouldnt be my first choice ........(well it would for obvious reasons, but you know what i mean!! )...... based on how many actually make it.....is it down to our coaching? our scouting?....are these promising youngsters actually nothing of the sort, or have we let go of anyone who has actually made the grade somewhere else? Maybe im wrong?!?! if im missing someone...let me know!
John am Rhein Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 most young players don't turn out to be any good - not just at Liverpool, but everywhere else as well
Damian_de Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Not the best example in many peoples' eyes, but tbf Traore came through and played a lot. The thing is, we're not really getting the 'sure things' like Arsenal in particular, because we aren't paying the high fees, wages, atractive sign ons and so on - we're shopping in the bracket below. Pacheco and Bruna are perhaps the only 2 who we might have signed who are in the really top class youngsters bracket. And then there's the one who got away - Essien.
Hassony Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Essien was already established when GH tried to sign him
richwilks Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Pacheco and Bruna are perhaps the only 2 who we might have signed who are in the really top class youngsters bracket. Dalle Valle was wanted by pretty much everyone Fulham even tried to pay 3.5m for him in the summer.
Gunga Din Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 well, its got a better chance of succeeding than just signing kids from England, thats a certainty
MFletcher Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Just to make the point that they were calls for Insua to be brought into the team last year. 'When you're ready, you're ready' and 'he makes us play better' were two of the lines repeated when Rafa refused to throw him in. He has been thrown in this season and he has struggled badly at times. He'll be much better for this year's worth of experience, but he was a very talented young player and it shows the folly of chucking them in and telling them to sink or swim. Unless you're a prodigy in the mould of Gerrard, Owen or Fowler, then you can't be chucked into the first team of a club of this size and left to it. Pacheco is in the same position as Insua was - he looks lively, he's exciting to watch, there are calls for him to be brought into the side at once. Given that a lot of people are now saying Insua is never going to be good enough, one must question if chucking Pacheco in would really be the right way forward. It's not, of course, but I've seen this repeated several times regarding Kelly and Pacheco and it's just not that easy.

I don't think Bruna will make it here, he's not done much since he came here. LDV was a big prospect when we signed him as well. I suppose you could count N'Gog as a a youngster as well and despite all the crap he's gotten he's done well. Duran would probably be in our first team by now if it wasn't for his injuries. Bouzanis and Gulacsi are both excellent young keepers. Nemeth will probably be a part of our first team squad next season. Huth would probably be in our squad now instead of Kyrgiakos if Parry hadn't f***ed up his contract. We'll probably make a couple of million on San Jose. Ayala is improving all the time and could be a first teamer in a couple of years.

Granted, relying on Aurelio is a fool's game, hence his contract not being renewed, which is shame but understandable.
Guest PaulMcC Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 We've only recently started signing top young talent under Rafa, it'll take a while. Pacheco and Dalle Valle were highly rated.

Clay Davis Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Duran would probably be in our first team by now if it wasn't for his injuries. Is he fit now? What's happening with him?
yellow jumper Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Is he fit now? What's happening with him? made his comeback for the reserves against tranmere last week i think. there's a little comp of sterling's debut for the under18s here
richwilks Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 (edited) made his comeback for the reserves against tranmere last week i think. there's a little comp of sterling's debut for the under18s here Duran has real talent, don't know if injuries will have taken their toll though as he's had 3 major ones. There is another kid in the u18s who is meant to be a massive talent, can't think of his name at the moment though. Edit: Adorjan. Edited March 12, 2010 by richwilks
Guest PaulMcC Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Adorjan doesn't look anything special to me.
BG Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 made his comeback for the reserves against tranmere last week i think. there's a little comp of sterling's debut for the under18s here Looks a bit useful.
Maldini Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Adorjan's alright, could develop into a good player. Wouldn't have him in the same category as Pacheco or even Amoo.
Guest PaulMcC Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 I think Wisdom should make it. Sterling must have a good chance too with all the top teams being in for him. Pacheco has a good chance, Kelly should make it.
Maldini Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Yeah Wisdom looks a class act, very hard to tell how lads that young will develop though.
aka Dus Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 For some reason there is a pretty common perception that local youngsters are more likely to succeed. I am sure most of us would agree it would be great if there were more local youngsters. I am perfectly happy with him brining in whatever talent is out there regardless of where they come from.
John am Rhein Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 We can have thousands of local youngsters for all I care provided they aren't accelerated into the actual team unless they are actually good enough. Almost all of them will fail to make the grade so it makes sense to cast as wide a net as possible. Then every decade or so a Gerrard might come through.
Jarg Armani Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 The only annoying thing about local youngsters is Everton get all the good ones. This is at least partly due to the short sighted opinion on Merseyside that young lads will become better players if they go to Everton.
