Both the Times (Tony Barratt) & the Telegraph are reporting the following comments by Rafa, probably in his press conference yesterday:

We signed three players and we wanted four. We brought Voronin back and signed another centre back. A good signing could have been really important"

This is the first time I've seen him say anything that refers to the much discussed problems in the last transfer window.

Contrasts with Purslow's comments a couple of months ago:

“We’ve spent about £20 million more than we’ve generated, which is what we expected. We’ve bought players the manager wanted to buy and sold players the manager wanted to sell and it has cost us almost to the penny what we expected it to cost. In fact, some of our competitors haven’t spent any money and we have. Spending isn’t the panacea everyone thinks it is, but we’ve spent £20 million and that’s real money. There are lots of costs associated with buying players and extending players that all go into transfer funds.”

What's this about, mate?

He stormed out of a meeting with Purslow on the day of the Stoke home game this season, loads of rumours were flying about saying he had quit if you remember

and it was because he was lied to again...he was told he had money to spend, but then he was informed that Kyriagkos would be the final signing. Obv that meant a large part of the Alonso money going down the swanny

And again, he, rightly, won't criticise Kyriagkos but he must have been about 73rd on the list and he had enquired to the tune of 6m for Turner the week before.

Just confirmation of what we already knew, I guesss - doesn't make it any more pleasant, You can be sure the squad are aware of this too. They're no doubt as demoralised as the fans.

Another thing - Torres suffered at Atletico because all the pressure was on him - that scenario is repeating itself.

He looked a proper defender him

He's every right to be.

Damn right he has. He must be furious inside and a few little snipets are starting to come out. If we lose tonight I'd expect him to blow and that would lead to him being sacked, I've no doubt about that.

There is no way Rafa would have let Alonso go if he thought he would get none of the money to reinvest. Another example of him being stabbed in the back by his bosses.

technically he did get money to reinvest, 20m of the 30m went on buying aquilani as replacement

the question is whether rafa was promised the full 30m (resulting in a 10m net spend) or was told beforehand he had to break even

We were told he had 20m net before the summer began and that he enquired after Turner indicates he was under the impression he certainly had more than 1.5m to spend.

who said we had 20m? missed that

the inquiry for turner indeed is strange, certainly looks like the owners reneged on their promises again

Why didn't he say this around the time of the Stoke game?

Everyone could see he'd been diddled.

Either he kept schtum because he was told to, or he thought it would upset the mood in the camp, at a time when he was trying to get the confidence flowing, because he thinks (thought) we had a great crack at the league.

Anyone else care to speculate?

Also, why come out with it now? It'll just be fuel to the "he's always looking for excuses" brigade...
