Jeez, with all the news being about transfers this summer I got to thinking of the summers when I was little (About 15 years ago) when I used to check ceefax 3 times a day and the delight when we signed McAteer.

Also, I remember when Arsenal won the title on 'that' day. My sister, 11, a gooner, taunting, ending up covered in tomato sauce

what about you guys?

can you imagine what it would be like without the internet?

having to wait for the sports update at the end of the news, or the paper in the morning and afternoon.

doesn't bear thinking about does it?

Blimus...I can remember back to when there were just two telly channels - BBC (1) and ITV, and the only football pre match of the day was a featurette on Grandstand with Sam Leitch. Any news on transfers back then came via the Liverpool Echo or, if they were big enough, the Daily Mirror - my Dad's paper of choice when it was still a paper pre-Maxwell. I don't think I can honestly remember St John and Yeats signing, but Peter Thompson was the first I'm sure I remember - 'the white Pele' as they called him, and later on Bobby Graham, Emlyn Hughes and a few others. My Barber in Broad lane, Kirkby was a massive red, and in the days when lads used to sit on a plank across the arms of a barbers chair and the only 3 hair cuts on offer were a 'Tony Curtis', a 'Square Neck' and a 'Crew Cut' (slap on the Brylcreem whether you wanted it or not), despite a handfull of those terrible haircut photos, most of all of his walls were covered in pictures of the reds.

He had a huge picture of Shanks, and oddly, one of Ken Dodd in a Liverpool kit standing, foot on the ball, arms crossed in front of the old Paddock with the barn roof and the name of the club on it...he had a similar one of Jimmy Tarbuck doing keepy-uppy. Another one had the Beatles and Gerry Marsden with Ron Yeats and St John and then, one day, a new team photo turned up (in colour!) with this new keeper standing next to big Tommy who looked like he got his hair cut in that very chair - a skinny kid with a curled top lip - Ray Clemence...that was the first time I'd heard of him.

Back then, it wasn't uncommon that unless it was a 'superstar' like Tony Hateley (don't laugh), the first time you knew we had a new player was the confused looks on fans faces at the match when they saw an unrecognised name on the teamsheet on the back page of the programme.

football didn't exist from mid/late May until mid/late August

- except for playing it, of course. Game lasted about 16 hours in those days. Final score 27-26 with winning goal scored just before the street lights came on.

I used to be obsessed with checking Teletext over and over. Remember when you used to follow live matches on Teletext or Ceefax!

I went through a period of phoning those stupid Teamtalk and Clubcall phonelines. Until my mum got a particularly bad phone bill!

First transfer I can remember is when Rush left for Juve. We used to have a live game and results coverage of the english league every saturday even back then, though. It started in 1969, even. That has a lot to do with why there's so many fans of english teams in Scandinavia.

First signings I can remember were Keegan going (the traitor) and Dalglish arriving. Going into that 77-78 season was a great mystery.

Just had a look at the results and it seems that Kenny scored in 6 out of his first 7 games. No' bad.

Remember Alun Evans arriving, all the fuss about the most expensive teenager..? Next 3 games we won 4-0, 6-0, 4-0 and Evans scored about 5 of them...

oh yeah I remember that! the headlines were so enticing weren't they? I remember when footy news started on the internet too. The website was advertised on their teletext ads. I remember going to Uni that night to go and check it out.

I remember getting excited about us being linked to Ronaldo on the teletext, must have read that page at least 10 times that day!

Remember one of those lines going mad saying we were signing Edwin Van Der Sar.

Then we signed Westerveld!

They also bigged up the Oyvind Leonhardsen signing something shocking!

God he was useless!

The teamtalk phone line is indirectly responsible for me being here. I used to ring them, then discovered they existed on the internet. They mentioned koptalk on the "Your say" page and I went from there to here.

Also, my 1st day of work in the south, I went into the office and my new manager was on holiday so I had nothing to do. Another manager bloke logged onto a machine and told me to surf the internet.

I put teamtalk into the address bar (this was the day I discovered it existed on the net in fact). I was enthralled by the tantilising headlines and the implcations (ZZ) of huge signings on Your Say. So then I put clubcall.com into the address bar. At that moment, a lad asked me if I fancied lunch. So I locked the PC and zipped out for lunch.

On my return to my desk, there was filth all over the computer screen. Clubcall.com was not the internet equivalent of the clubcall lines. It was a porn site. 1st day at work. Logged on as a senior bloke in the organisation. Surfing porn.

More or less the path I took as well

I remember having to take a 90 minutes train to journey to work everyday when I used to work in Surrey, so I used to print the yoursay pages for the whole day and read them on the train back home

Pretty much the same for me!

Although, when I first joined Koptalk I tended to change my name after every post and just insult the regulars

I remember when the only 90 mins of live footy on the telly was the F.A. cup final, and it seemed to last forever.

90 mins now seems to be gone in seconds.

That's called Alzheimer's.

Aaah... the good old 'plinging' on the screen as soon as there were a goal somewhere in the PL or (the old, but not THAT old) div 1 during the Saturday English game.

Remember us having this drinking game where we had a shot every time a score came through before going out on Saturdays, two shots for each sending off which also showed and special rules for own goals and Port Vale for some reason :) On one such Saturday there was an abnormal amount of goals in many games, with two matches in particular ending something like 6-4 and 5-3.

I'm afraid I was very, very drunk..
