Benitez congratulates rivals but will not praise FergusonSTEVE NAILOR May 18 2009

West Brom 0

Liverpool 2

Rafael Benitez yesterday declined to congratulate Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, for winning the championship, although he was willing to offer praise to his rival club as a whole.

Benitez watched his Liverpool side send West Bromich Albion back to the Coca-Cola Championship, all but securing second place in the process, just a day after United won their 18th league crown to equal Liverpool's record.

As well as twice being asked at the post-match press conference whether he would offer words of praise to Ferguson, the Spaniard was also questioned about an on-field bust-up between Jamie Carragher and Alvaro Arbeloa, in which the Liverpool defenders pushed each other before they were pulled apart by colleagues.

However, Benitez's unforgiving attitude towards Ferguson proved to be the biggest talking point. Benitez said: "Normally you have to be polite and respect the other manager. During the season we have seen a lot of things that I didn't like, so that's it.

I say congratulations to United because they have won.

I prefer just to say well done to the club, a big club, a good club. And that's it."

The sheer cheek of our manager. Refusing to tell the world how good Slurgie is. What did the journalists expect?

Never seen Wenger, Mourinho or Ferguson himself asked to congratulate the manager of the title-winning team personally. Just the team.

s***-stirring journalists.

We'll see some right Ferguson a***-kissing now

Exactly. And they were whining about it on MOTD2 last night - ignoring the fact that the man who supposedly deserves a gracious word has been graceless enough to ban the channel, among many others, for years.

That was after Lee Dixon decided the best central midfielder in the world this season and also the captain of Argentina would not be able to make it into a combined Man Utd/Liverpool XI.

Why is Rafa held to a moral standard not expected of Ferguson himself? If the classless drunk goes on a patronising or demeaning rant, pundits just chuckle "Well that's typical Fergie".

Yep. Keown differed in that he would have Mascherano in, but Alonso would apparently play second fiddle to Carrick.

I'm not sure what qualities are required to occupy a seat on the MOTD sofa, but rudimentary knowledge of football is clearly not one of them.

Keown managed to compile a video of "why Kuyt isn't good enough" clips that showed some lovely little passes through and over the defence for team mates that in 3/4 cases put them in 1 on 1 situations with the last defender. Instead of defence splitting passes, Keown seemed to opine, Kuyt should be focused on running down the wing with the ball at his feet. Arsenal clearly will not have to look far for their next Manager when Wenger leaves.

Please don't tell me Van Der Sar was in over Reina?

Oh yes.

It was an odd little segment on MOTD2. They were of the opinion that the main difference between Liverpool and Man Utd was that our squad lacked strength in depth, and then went on to show that only 2/3 of our players would make a combined squad. Make your mind up lads.

it was odd wasn't it. the kuyt montage was full of contradictions too.

then sherlock dixon said the relegation fight would go to the last game.

Can i say something? Seriously, would it have hurt Rafa to be the bigger man and congratulate United and Fergie like a gentleman should? If he had done this, maybe people would have highlighted the fact that Fergie congratulated the Liverpool players, and he explicitly used those words, when asked on Saturday about the challenge from Liverpool this season.

I honestly just Rafa would be a touch smarter about this all.

Do you like our club, at all? First Carra has disgraced us, now Rafa?

After Ferguson has publicly questioned his integrity and branded him 'arrogant' and 'beyond the pale'? I don't blame Rafa one iota for batting away such a s***-stirring question. The BBC are hardly in any position to complain about Ferguson having the moral high ground, given his well publicised refusal to speak to them. The man's a c***, but apparently that's alright.

And I usually find Keown and Dixon two of the better pundits, but last night's segment was plain bizarre. Struck me as 'United have won the title, let's w*** off'. van der Sar over Reina, O'Shea at right back, Carrick and f***ing Fletcher in the centre of midfield? This was after Lee Dixon had decreed that there wasn't much between the two first XIs, before deciding that, actually, there was. Keown's segment on Kuyt showed him linking play up very well etc. He wanted him to 'drive' at the defender, even though Dirk can't dribble well and isn't the quickest. Was this praised as knowing your limitations? It was not, it was dismissed as 'not good enough for the right hand side'.

Abysmal.

I agree with the assorted pundits/journos, Rafa failed to show grace in defeat, especially after SAF showed his usual grace in victory by crediting Liverpool and Rafa for pushing ManU harder than most would've expected.

Rafa congratulated Manchester United. What more do you want? Does he have to name the major contributors to their league win individually? Why not get upset by the fact that he didn't congratulate Keith Hackett for United's win especially as it is his last full season as Ferguson's bitch...

Guys, i aint attacking Rafa, im just putting an argument forward, nothing more. I support Rafa no matter what he does, he has in alot of ways saved our club in more ways than people really understand. However it does not mean i will not question his wisdom on things. Rafa would have looked like the bigger person, he would have made Ferguson look like a DICK, this is the only reason i brought this up.

As for Carra, i stand by my comments, his actions yesterday were a disgrace, 1 step too far.

What he actually said :

"I will say congratulations to Manchester United. They have done well, but I do not want to say too much.

"I prefer just to say well done to the club, a big club, a good club.

"Normally you have to be polite and respect the other manager. During the season we have seen a lot of things that I didn't like, so that's it.

f***ing spot on, in my opinion. He is standing up to Mr Ferguson's bulls*** - how he gets away with everything, including constantly having a pop at other managers and how the referees are intimidated by Ferguson and not backed up by the FA.

Made up that he has the bottle to do this.

Fergie. Fergie. Fergie, Fergie, Fergie, Fergie, Fergie. Fergie. Fergie, Fergie.

You'll have a mirror somewhere in yours Dule. Don your replica jersey and look into that mirror. Take a good long look. And then have a f***ing word with yourself.

He shouldn't give Ferguson an inch. Next season has already started and we need every scrap of everything we can get our hands on.
