“When he came to Liverpool he said he would be working only on the defending side of things. Everyone was thinking ‘what is he talking about?’

“He said in the next year he would work on the midfield and in the year after it would be the strikers. In four years’ time we would be ready.”

So says Salif Diao (nice to see him praising Rafa in the article despite the fact he hardly got a look in under him)

Fair play to Diao for that

Top man

I have always liked big Salif, he wasn't good enough for us but it wasn't his fault that GH paid £5m to get him here

that's a cracking little interview.

I don't think it gets said enough - we are unbelievably good defensively. The back 4 are so well organised. It's right up there with graham's arsenal, only in a more competitive, faster-paced league.

punch me for saying this, but when he was given the rare chance as a center mid...he looked ok to me, certainly not as bas as hes been made out to be..

Of course for some reason houllier played him generally in any position apart from c-mid..

Could say the same of Biscan....who looked pretty good as a center mid(his performances against juve the highlight), though destroyed his career by moving him to center back.

:nono: Deportivo La Coruna away, played like a man possessed and looked an absolute world beater that night.

Exactly and he didn't swan around the pitch either he gave it effort every time he was selected and never brought any bad headlines or shame on the club.

Unlike another Senegalese player who joined the club at the same time.

Diouf's work rate was always top class on the pitch.

I thought Cheyrou was French?

At the very least matched (and in my opinion surpassed) Diao's work rate and desire.

I disagree. I think Diao gave the best he could in every game - even when played at CB in that League Cup game where he had a complete mare. Joof often looked like he was playing within himself to me. Could have been brilliant, didn't like doing what he was told, and prone to blaming everyone else around him when things didn't go his way

I'm going to have to agree with Kahnee here and that's never something that makes me comfortable.

Agreeing with me is like sitting on a d**do - uncomfortable to begin with, but you get used to it
