Liverpool face losing Martin Skrtel after the Slovakian admitted he is struggling to adjust to life on Merseyside.

The 24-year-old defender is lonely and bored and would like to return to St Petersburg, according to his close friend, Zenit goalkeeper Kamil Contofalsky.

Contofalsky told Russia's 90 Minutes Magazines: 'I talk a lot to Martin on the phone and he said he would like to return to Zenit because it's very boring for him in England.

'He feels lonely there, doesn't have any friends. And also the local paparazzi follow him all the time.

'There's no such camera madness in Russia and Martin confessed to me that life in St Petersburg was better for him.

'But that doesn't mean he regrets his move to Liverpool. He made it into the main squad quickly and played top class football which is much better than in the Russian premiership.'

From the Offical site only today saying he hopes to be back playing for xmas:

Martin Skrtel has set his sights on a return to first-team action during the club's festive schedule.

The commanding centre-back has been out since October 5,

after damaging a posterior cruciate ligament injury to his right knee in Liverpool's 3-2 win over Manchester City.

However, the Reds number 37 is now on the mend and admits rehabilitation is going well.

"The injury is much better," Skrtel told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It has been six weeks since the injury and I have stopped using the

crutches, but obviously I have work to do in order to get the

ligament back to what it was before.

"The pain when it happened was huge and I thought it was much worse

than it actually was. Once I was back in the changing room I realised

it was not as serious as I first feared.

"I was unhappy but injuries are part of football games.

"The first week or two was the worst but then I started to look

forward to doing exercises that helped me to heel and speed up the

recovery process."

As for a likely return date, the Slovakian international is still hopeful he will achieve his initial target of a run-out during the Christmas programme.

"I don't know exactly the date but the predictions were for before Christmas and I am hoping it is as soon as possible," he added.

"It has been a long time. I can't wait to start kicking a ball again

and resume full training."

Daniel Agger and Sami Hyypia have stood in for the Slovakian international in recent weeks and Skrtel is well aware that he faces a tough task to dislodge them from the team when he returns.

He said: "Daniel and Sami are excellent players and they are playing well.

"It will be difficult to get back into the team but I am working hard

and I will do my best to impress the coach and fight for my place

back."

Skrtel admits that he has been impressed with the form of the team in

his absence but feels that it is too early to start thinking of

silverware.

"Being at the top of the Premier League gives us a lot of confidence," he added.

"We are trying to win every game and hopefully our form can continue for as long as possible.

"Of course I would like to win some silverware but it's still early

and there is a long time to go until the end of the season.

"I am sad that I am not currently part of the team but I am happy that we are winning and at the end of the day it is the goal of all of us to win matches."

It's is very lonely for me in England (as I am injured and cannot train) and I am bored (with the repetitive physiotherapy and would obviously prefer to be playing football). I would like to return to St Petersburg (occasionally, obviously, as that is where I am from and many of my friends live, but I am a professional footballer, not a child and playing for one of the most famous clubs in the world in the highest paid and most exciting league on the planet). I am however not unduly bothered by fans wishing to have their photograph taken with me.

Is probably more accurate. :ok:

Isn't he Slovak?

Probably.

He came from St Petersburg to Liverpool though...

Bloody hell a player from a country going elsewhere to play footy, then coming to us.

How novel...

i dont have an issue with this, its just taken out of context. hes had a long term injury where he isnt playing every day and spends a lot of time with his feet up. its pretty typical in such situations, as rafa has said on record before, to send players back to their home towns while theyre recovering. at some point since his injury he probably did tell his buddy he wishes he was back in st peters. as per any tabloid though you can expect them to take it a step further. imo its a bulls*** story with an element of truth but owt to be concerned about. hes a professional footy player - if hes in it for the money hes on more now than he was, if hes in it for the glory he wont be going too far :)

Rafa rubbishes it on the Offal...

Rafael Benitez has rubbished claims that Martin Skrtel is seeking a move away from Liverpool. Reports in the Russian press suggested the 24-year-old defender - who is currently recovering from a knee injury - was unsettled in England and was looking for a move back to former club Zenit St Petersburg.

But Benitez insists his Slovakian centre-back is happy on Merseyside and enjoying life at Anfield.

"These sort of stories always tend to come out during an international week," said the Liverpool manager.

"I was talking with Martin at Melwood yesterday and it was clear that he is very happy and just wants to get back playing.

"He is working very hard to get himself fit again and he is very settled at Liverpool – both in the city and at the club."

Benitez was today keeping his fingers crossed that his international stars returned to Melwood injury-free after last night's friendlies across Europe.

Five of his players figured in Spain's 3-0 win over Chile in Villarreal with Fernando Torres, Pepe Reina, Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa and Albert Riera all winning another cap.

"It was good to see so many of our players involved because it shows how important Liverpool are," he said. "I was especially pleased for Arbeloa and Riera because they are getting their reward for working hard and doing a good job for a good club.

"Hopefully the players will come back and be fit and ready for the game against Fulham because that is the most important thing for us now."
