Barton admits team-mate assault

Joey Barton initially denied the assault

Premier League footballer Joey Barton has admitted assaulting a former team-mate in a training ground row.

The Newcastle United midfielder was due to go on trial at Manchester Minshull Crown Court over the incident.

The 25-year-old changed his plea and admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) shortly before the scheduled start.

He attacked Ousmane Dabo during a training ground row on 1 May last year when both played for Manchester City.

£5.8m signing

The trial, which had been due to start more than a year after the alleged assault, was put back until after the season had ended for the convenience of witnesses.

Many of the them are involved in professional football.

Liverpool-born Barton was sold by City to Newcastle in a £5.8m deal last summer.

Dabo, 31, is now playing for Rome side Lazio.

It is the third time Barton has been in court during 2008.

His time at Newcastle must be up

Not sure if this is correct but a guy I work with said that he'd read that Barton had been given a Goodyear direction and been told he can expect a suspended sentence. Its possible as I understand that this offence pre-dates the affray for which he is currently serving.

He was due to be released today with a tag, kept in forsentancing tomorrow.

Just shown the city centre kickoff on tv.

he's just a horrible, nasty piece of work isn't he? still there'll be managers who'll think they can turn him around and set him on the straight and narrow as usual. wouldn't f***ing happen in the real world, he'd be acknowledged as a dead loss and rightly so.

How is it that he is such a "hard" c***? He is not very big as most footballers. I hope someone rape him in prison.

Was seriously linked with us under GH as I recall. Dodged a bullet there

And for years afterwards we kept getting people saying "Oh he's a good scouse lad really. I'm sure we could straighten him out. He'd love to play for us and it'd be ace to have another local lad blah blah blah."

We even had a thread of that started on here last year whilst he was still awaiting trial.

Barton is a vile stain of a human being

Repressing your feelings is unhealthy. Just let it out man!

I'm hedging my bets at the moment. If Diouf f***s off abroad in the close season I'll need to select a new target for my disdain. Barton and Anelka are both handily placed at the moment.

Has Diouf (hatehimsomuch) not already gone?

But Anelka played a the best game ever by any liverpool player against Newcastle, surely that should count towards something

It does count towards something. In fact references to that game are a big part of what qualifies him for this role.

I think Anelka and Barton as worth of taking over from Diouf, but I assume you are ignoring any player from Manure

Yeah it's important to add variety.

Not to mention the fact Drogba, Lampard and Ronaldo are all leaving. That said, there's still Eboue. The c***.
