Aurelio out for the season

Fabio Aurelio's season is over

Apr 24 2008 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL have suffered a major blow after in-form Fabio Aurelio was ruled out for at least three weeks.

The Brazilian left-back was stretchered off in the second half of Tuesday's drawn Champions League semi-final against Chelsea following an innocuous challenge with Joe Cole.

Now Liverpool's worst fears have been realised after Aurelio was diagnosed with a torn abductor muscle – an injury which will rule him out of the rest of the Premier League campaign.

Even if Liverpool do manage to get past Chelsea next week, Aurelio would still face a race against time to be ready for the final on May 21.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez said: "I have been talking with the doctor and with this kind of injury it usually takes a minimum of three weeks for the player to recover so it will be very difficult for Fabio to play again this season.

"It is very disappointing because Fabio has been doing a good job for the team."

Martin Skrtel is the latest Liverpool player to state his belief that the Reds can still conquer Chelsea despite the last gasp own goal they conceded on Tuesday night when John Arne Riise sent a misguided header crashing past Pepe Reina.

The Slovak said: "For most of the time we were in the lead, we controlled the game, we created more chances than them.

"Petr Cech did perfectly for Chelsea and we, instead of winning 3-0, managed to claim just a 1-1 draw.

"Everything is still open, there are 90 minutes to be played.

"They are up now but I firmly believe that we have the potential to score a goal at Stamford Bridge.

“And if we don't concede, we will go through – the mathematics is as simple as that. I am convinced it will turn out well for us in the end.”

Skrtel refused to blame Riise for his own goal, although he admitted he was shocked by the manner in which Liverpool conceded.

"It was a big shock and disappointment for me," he added. "Nobody expected anything like that as it was the last moments of the game.

"After Kalou's cross two defenders were in front of the goal and I was the one to defend Drogba. The ball came to the far post, Riise wanted to head it over the goal or out of the pitch but he did not manage to do that. It is a pity but there is still the second leg where we can undo this stumble."

Meanwhile, Tom Hicks has described his latest meeting with Rafa Benitez as "positive and encouraging".

The controversial co-owner met with the boss at Melwood yesterday to discuss summer transfer plans and Hicks' own position at the club.

"We had a great meeting," said Hicks. "We talked about a lot of things and it was very positive and encouraging. We have agreed to meet again and it is a very healthy situation. Rafa is happy and wants to talk about where he is taking the club."

'I will rip their lungs from their puralent, flabby, white southern chests before tearing their skulls from within their scalps and spitting down their disclosed neck cavities.

Then it will be time for the half-time oranges' said Skrtel.

Some should read the whole article:

is aurelio the most injury prone player ever?

There are some rumours about another player, but few have seen him in a red shirt. If I remember correctly, his name is Harry Kewel - but I have never seen him so I'm not shure about the truth in this at all.

He's as imaginary as the fabled five legged dingo, mate.

Fantastic wording of the post.

Groin problem, so b******s indeed.

Worth noting that is he hadn't been injured Riise probably woun't have been on the pitch ergo = double b******s. Does Riise know how to even use his right b******?

Only to score against Barcalona with....Hmmmmm

From an injury viewpoint, maybe, from a footballing one, he, unlike some, keeps the ball ... a good squad member, who's had no luck for years now!

He's impossible to plan around. He plays 25 games a season tops
