In talks with Spurs but I actually think he'd make a good signing for us.

Decent value at £8-9m with only a year and a half on his contract, and his goalscoring record has been exceptional throughout his career.

If you move along one of Kuyt or Voronin for £3-6m the all important net spend isn't much. I'd certainly see him as more of a threat up front than either of those two.

No great recollection of him. Being kept out by Meelan no? Have heard (radio probably) he wants big money. Should we really be going for second tier strikers to replace other second tier strikers? Surely we should pool everything for top quality attacking talent and stop trying to polish less than diamonds, we're no good at it.

I suppose it depends on what you call second tier. You could have looked at Berbatov being at a similar level; he actually wasn't always first choice at Leverkeusen and his goalscoring record wasn't amazing by German League standards either. Yuo could see the talent though.

I suppose it could be a case of me suffering a bit of ABVOK Syndrome (Anyone But Voronin Or Kuyt), but I think this guy knows where the net is, and has enough strength to be effective and give himself the chance succeed in English football.

Doesn't look like we're in the market now anyway though so will be interested to see how he fares at Spurs. Someone will have to move on from there if they sign him, Defoe probably I suppose.

One of the papers was saying we were in for Huntelaar too at £12M - I've seen a bit of both Huntelaar and Fred and they do look good but then so did Kuyt in Holland and Cisse in France

No doubt you have a point, I'm just wary about our record with buying in particular attacking players to fill shoes they'd need to grow into. It's not about Fred, because I admit I've got little recall about his quality, it's just a general point about our scouting and recruitment, we tend to get what we pay for, no more no less.

Now I've seen him, and I worry about his all round game and his pace. If we were full of great attacking play and creativity but were lacking a box striker he'd be grand, however it's outside the box we need to work on surely?

We have a team of players, Torres aside, who seem to play exclusively outside of the box. Getting someone in who'll camp out in the opposition penalty area isn't the worst idea in the world

True.

Out of all our strikers other than Torres, Crouch has probably spent the most time playing in a traditional centre forward's position (when he actually gets a game). However for the most part, although he spends a lot of time in the box, he does seem to look for a flicked pass first rather than shooting - at the moment at least.

With the ball at his feet he is a pretty decent striker but often isn't greedy enough.

Kuyt scored a lot of goals in a classic centre forward's position at club level in Holland but this season on the rare occasions he is in the box rather than out on the wing or in midfield, his finishing has been singularly unimpressive.

We've got Crouch who does that and it doesn't make us great. We dont really play, that's my point, the guys, especially playing off Torres simply dont produce the quality. We're not tearing teams apart, putting great quality service in and missing a load of stuff on a plate. There is a massive amount on the attacking players to create for themselves, which is where Torres is doing so well, huge slice of his goals are individual, how many are down to great service? Either we need to play better quicker football as a side, or we need better individuals playing wide and off Torres, ideally both.

he's very lazy.

I agree with that. The few games I.ve seen Fred play, he had that annoying Cisse characteristic of not moving or giving chase to any ball that wasn't perfect for him.

Needs to lead the line though doesn't he? From what I've seen (admittedly little) he can't play as the second striker and if you have some one else leading the line then you dilute Torres's effectiveness.

We can only afford to "take a punt" in positions we're already strong in IMO, Lucas being a case in point. We've signed too many "maybes" in recent years and that is why we're a bit short at the moment, we need to sign more players like Torres where the chances of them making it are much higher.
