Fabio Capello has been 'tapped up' twice by Liverpool as Rafa Benitez battles to stay in command at Anfield.

Capello claims he was contacted before and after last week's Champions League win over Porto as boss Benitez's relationship with owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks reached crisis point.

That will alarm the FA, who see the out-of-work Italian, 61, as a potential candidate to succeed Steve McClaren as England boss.

Although Benitez has reached a ceasefire in his war of words with his American bosses, they may be pushed into action if the Reds fail to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages. And they will need a ready-made replacement.

Fa chief executive Brian Barwick, who has been canvassing opinion on who to put in charge of England, has heard some heavyweight backing for Capello from ex-England bosses Terry Venables, Graham Taylor and Glenn Hoddle.

And members of the FA hierarchy favour the vastly experienced Italian more than Jose Mourinho.

Former Chelsea boss Mourinho has declared publicly he is interested in the job - but the FA fears he is using it to draw out the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona as he is desperate to get back into club management.

Capello has already said he wants the job, but the FA has yet to contact him or other candidates including Mourinho, Jurgen Klinsmann and Martin O'Neill.

England captain John Terry yesterday backed his old boss Mourinho, saying: "He's a great guy tactically. He came in and took us (Chelsea) to a new level.

"I've had a meeting with Brian Barwick, but that will stay private between me and him. It's great to be consulted on these matters."

If i never heard of, or even felt the brilliance of Rafa Benitez, there would not be many better coaches in the world to be linked to. However i must admit that if true, this story could open up a whole new can of worms.

so a story has to have quotes to be true? internet mythology.

no but the report does not even use the old 'friends of Capello said...' or 'sources close to Capello claim...'

He wants the England job, not a bad way of hurrying the decision along.

Same thought occurred - that is if this story actually has anything to do with him at all.

No but the headline says he claims they are chasing him. Where has he claimed it

I've no doubt it's possible G & H are doing something like this but the story is very thin

Considering Foster G, Rafa and Parry were all siting together at the mini-derby having a fine old time last night, it doesn't seem that likely.

ahh, it looks pretty but only that. There's still that fabled 16 Dec meeting. Get that away and we'll see where the wind blows.

This particular piece is hardly internet mythology but has only one source, Mirror. Let's see whether others would carry it.

 might be so in internet mythology but in newspaper lore it kind of helps to validate the story somewhat

It looked at least functional rather than pretty. That Dec 16th meeting is supposed to be about looking at the needs of the team for the next window(s).

Given what has happened, even if one believes it's one big blow up, I for one, can't envisage Dec 16 just a meeting on the needs of the team and nothing else.

But, well, at least things have settled down a bit. Long may it continue!

In political speak, that's exactly what it's supposed to be and what the masses are supposed to think. Move along, nothing to see-hear.

It would sense for Parry/Hicks/Gillette to have contacted a possible replacement if they have it in mind to get rid of Benitez. It won't hurt them to have this story gain legs so that when they do talk to Rafa they can say something along the lines of "well, if you don't toe the line we'll just bring in..."

I have no idea at all if the story is true but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.
