Rafa Benitez- does he overcook things?

In my opinion we are lucky to have Rafa as the manager but last game of the season where we should have been crowned as European Champions reflected a side to Rafa which has worried me since FA Cup final.. There are too many times where we are too tactical e.g in the final last week we played Zenden in the hope that he was defensively sound to stop Oddo overlapping.. We had Gerrard to counter Pirlo dictating.. Too a large extent we controlled the game but because there was a lack of adventure we did not create many chances.. This was a game where we should have by two or three as this Milan side was average and old.. Even the assured Nesta was making mistakes.. I am really frustrated as this was the first final we lost in Europe in my lifetime as the one in Heysel was due to a penalty which was not..

He didnt overcook anything getting there , thats football things dont always go your way.

A couple of better players in key positions and we prob would have won the game and lets be honest our own SG missed a sitter , s*** happens

he's over-cooked us to 2 champions league finals in 3 seasons.

maybe if we did not change tactics against every opposition there would be more consistency thereby giving our players more confidence

Remove the tactical element and we could have seen Milan Vs the Mancs Mk 2 in the final.

We are not yet in a position where we have all of the personnel. Our unity and system is our strength at the moment. As Rafa has said, we've been building a squad these past couple of years. We've still lifted trophies and got to 4 out of a possible 9 finals and have qualified for the CL on every occasion.

There are times when you wish we'd go for it but if you don't concede then you'll always stand more of a chance of a positive outcome than taking the risk and having to expose your defense chasing a deficit.

We've been playing unified, if cautious, too cautious at times, football where the system is greater than the sum of it's parts.

You can't have it both ways. You can't hope to get to these finals through tactical plans devised for the oppo, well executed by the players and then expect us to go out and play toe-to-toe with no plan other than to be better man for man. It works both ways, UTD go through the comp playing one way, change it around to tactically cope with a team and go out well beaten.

One of the big differences between Rafa, Wenger and Slur Alex is that Slur Alex knows how to unlease the creativity of his players to an end result, Wenger knows how to get creative players playing together and so far Rafa seems happy with hard workers and intelligent players.... much as I love Liverpool's hardworking tactical football it will not make a great world brand attract more supporters and earn the revenues needed for transfers in the future.

The Man Utd brand is swash buckle football and the world loves that; the Arsenal Brand pretty passes and must walk the ball into the net and the journalists love that. The current Liverpool style ... huff and puff.

Sure I just want us to win things, but I wouldnt mind a little Style with all of the Substance Rafa's bringing

So yes I do think he over cooks things, but the reason is that we do not have the staff/personnel Rafa would really want here - when Rafa's done I expect to see soemthing of a cross between Milan and Barca or Arsenal and Chelsea

I think tactically he got it spot on in the final.

Milan made 1 chance in the whole game on the break, and scored from a set piece.

The simple fact is that yet again we were not clinical enough.

I tend to agree with you, in the final rafa set out a team to neturalise the Milian thrust, but they were far less effective than everyone expected and he didn't change to a more aggresive form early enough as he was so engrossed in his tactical plan.

Pretty much spot on, that.

Think he got it very nearly right in the final. Hindsight is great but we lacked threat up front. More to do with the personnel we're working with, but we needed more creativity.

If he didn't over cook things we would not have got to 2 finals in 3 years. Let's see how he does when he has players he trusts to play a more expansive game or be clinical enough to carry on with the way we play

tactics only put you in position to win a match, the players still need to produce and ours simply didn't do enough in that final.

I would have done things differently to Benitez on the night - not hindsight, i said so at the time - doesn't mean it would have made a jot of difference for the better.

Plus the fact that we are lacking quality in some positions.

We had the better of the game against Milan but truthfully didn't create very much ourselves despite all the possession we had in good areas.

Putting Kuyt upfront alone never worked all season. It certainly didn't last week. However, Rafa has made us very hard to beat and competitive against anyone. We just need to add some flair players and a top class SCORER and we will be challenging.
