God I feel old!

I remember getting to the ground about 4:30 and the gates weren't even open but there was alraedy a buzz around the ground. I got a good spot somewhere in the middle of the Kop only to end up 30 yards over by the time the game started. What a great start too with Keegan scoring the early goal. Then that stunner from I think it was Bethaney and we were rocked. However, after another great Ray Kennedy goal it all came down to Super Sub. It seemed like an age for him to take the ball down go past the defenders and cooly slot it home, but when he did everything went absolutely crazy. The noise in the last few minutes of the game was deafening and the chants of "Allez les Rouges" were superb. Even the St Etienne fans with their green wigs were stunned by it all.

I left Liverpool in 1983 to come to the States, so I have missed many of the big nights like Roma and Chelsea but that night will foreever be etched in my memory. A couple of years ago we had Davey Fairclough over to a supporters club do. We were watching the game and it was like re-living that night all over again. This time I could actually get closer to the goalscorer than I did on the night. God help the lad as I lifted him off the ground I think.

I remember queueing at the ground for hours, straight from school. Got in about 15 minutes before kick-off and I don't think my feet touched the ground that often.

I remember seeing half of the Anny Road a see of green and white, I had never witnessed so many away fans at Anfield before.

I remember the Echo printing 'Allez Les Rouges' and saying that we should sing it.

I remember Keegan scoring in the first few minutes, and that goal by St Etienne - Clem never saw it.

I never saw Fairclough's winner cross the line or hit the net, I just remember thinking that the goalie had saved it then all of a sudden a massive cheer went around the ground.

Going home on the bus everyone was singing, and I set off every car alarm around our estate in celebration.

This game was one of the best European nights at Anfield for many many reasons.

I was there with my then mate Pete Leavesley and his brother in law, in the paddock. Almost directly in line with Bethanay's shot which curved wickedly past Clemence. The noise was stunning, How keegan scored early from a short corner when really he meant to cross it but it drifted over their short a*** keeper into the net at the Anny Road end.

The Ettienne fans played their parts with their 'Allez les verts' banners and chants (soon to be forever mimicked by our own cries of 'Allez Les Rouges' .My mate was listening - or trying to - the other games on his radio - toward the end of the second half it looked like Bayern Munich (a favourite of his) were going out 'Oh I hope we go now an' all' he moans - at almost the same instance, Fairclough was put through and closed on the keeper, slotting it past him into the corner at the kop end....Pete got some right crap from me and his B.i.L then! We went f*cking nuts at the end. I remember we had a car parked not far from the ground but the only thing i remember after that was getting home just in time to watch the highlights on sportnight! I always felt we took our first steps down a particularly long road that night.

Clem did see Bethanays shot and dived full length - and best keeper as he was anywhere back then, he still couldn't get anywhere near it. Another memory was counting the number of times their defenders just 'bounced' off Ray Kennedy in tackles or when he went past them - that was a hoot.

I remember not being allowed to go - I was 7 - cos we'd seen some trouble on Venmore St after the Trabzonspor game (some tw*ts attacked some Turkish and robbed them as they were boarding a coach) and I had to stay in with my cousin while the rest of the family went. But we lived only a few hundred yards from the ground so the pair of us went down to get in when the gates opened with ten mins to go anyway. Couldn't get into the crowd on The Kop but jumped about with all the other kids on the steps.

We had to leg it back and get home before everyone else and pretend we'd been listening to the radio all night.

Can remember queuing for hours to get into the Kop, also made it with about 15 minutes to spare. The noise was deafening and you could cut the atmosphere with a knife.

Anny Rd end was a sea of green and white and their goal was stunning in more ways than one.

I was wearing a big grey RAF overcoat and must have lost half a stone I was that hot. I knew Fairclough was going to score as soon as he broke clear with the ball and after it went in my feet didn't touch the ground until the game was over and I was back outside the ground.

Still the best game ever at Anfield for me, although Chelsea came close.

I remember their first album was everywhere, but then they seemed to disappear off the face of the earth

They're still going and she's also done solo stuff.

Back to the question, i was 5 and remember f*** all about it.

I was at Leeds Uni at the time final year. We left Leeds in good time and arrived at about 5.00 to chaos, the streets were packed. We gave up the queue at about 6.30 as word got out that there was no chance.

We went for drinks then it gets hazy I don't think it was live on tele so we got Radio City in the pub and it was a wait for highlights. Never seen such crowds outside Anfield ever before

I went to the first leg with a friend on a motor bike. That was one heck of a trip, but worth all the hassle.

I was 18 at the time and took my brother who was 16, but really skinny.

We got there hours before the game and there seemed to be thousands of people just milling around waiting for the gates to open.

We saw loads of French fans with their green wigs and there was lots of scarf swapping going on.

The Kop seemed to fill in seconds and was packed about an hour before kick off. We were in our usual spec but none of the regulars were to be found.

When the goals went in, the Kop went crazy and we were all over the place. When fairclough scored I lost sight of my brother for an instant and then saw he was caught over a barrier. I moved bodies out of the way and dragged him off the bar, he was white as a ghost and I thought he was hurt, but he was just winded.

What sticks in my mind is the noise as Fairclough scored. I went to both of the semi final games, but missed the final in Rome due to A-Levels on the day of the match.

I was in The Anny Road end with my dad sitting on a concrete wall at the back of the stand. I think (could be wrong) it was the first game you had to pay a £1 to get into. Is that right? We were in the queue ages before the game and got in with loads of time to spare but the crowds just kept coming in. It was really chocca

I was 10 at the time and remember the absolute bedlam that took place when Fairclough scored. Magical times

This clip will give you an idea of the atmosphere right after Super Sub scored

Reclaim the Kop would have been furious. There's a lad on that clip with a plastic Union Jack bowler hat on. ;)

Looks amazing on that tape. I have a videotape of it somewhere and i've got the programme framed on my wall though I was only 3 at the time. My uncle went to all the games and kept that programme.

i remember running home from school and my mum standing at the front door with my butties in a sunblessed wrapper. she wouldnt let me take my duffel coat off , seeing kids hanging of the back of the bus and wishing i was that mad to do it. it was my first night match and could not believe how green the pitch was under floodlights.or how that fella could throw a mars bar to the right person in the kop. when fairclough scored ended up face first into the kop wall didnt feel no pain .

If I remember correctly the gates opened at 5:30 and we had been in the queue since 4:30. It was pay at the gate in the Kop as I remember, as most games were. I just remember getting a great spot with a cracking view only to end up miles away from my mates. I was sweating like a pig after I got oout of the ground. The ride back on the 52 bus from Spellow Lane was superb. Everyone was singing and shouting out the window. Never realized back then as a 16 year old how great a night it really was.
