As so often this season, Liverpool were let down by Reina's inconsistent goalkeeping

Reina has had his fair share of blooper moments this season and on 26 minutes he served up another whopper to the delight of the Newcastle fans.

A bit harsh, I'd say.

it's harsh, yes. saturday was a bad f***-up, but he's hardly error-prone.

Agree. Nine times out of ten he would have cleared the ball into the stands. Agger's barge on Martins didn't help the situation.

Can't think of any errors apart from the Woodison game, where the game was lost anyway.

BBC = Clueless feckers!!! :angry:

Pepe had an indifferent start to the season, and if our second keeper was better than Dudek then he would have been dropped.

Since then Pepe has been excellent and this was his first mistake for months, he has been extremely consistent since the first few months and does not deserve to be hung drawn and quartered for this one mistake.

We have only conceded 19 goals this season, hardly a sign of an error strewn season from Reina. The problem we have is scoring enough goals, if they want to slag us off for something.

I concur with this opinion.

didn't pepe kick the ball straight at the two on-coming players?

seemed like a clock up from where i was.

Yes, it was his fault, but in the context of the season it does not deserve the criticism aimed towards himself in that article.

I'm resigned to the fact that Reina will make dodgy mistakes maybe 2-3 times a season. I think it is mainly as a result of the way he plays! He is one of the most aggressive keepers in England and he will back himself in 50-50 situations when other keepers will play more conservatively.

I don't want any other keeper in Reina's place because, even though he may make silly mistakes on a couple of occassions, he is extremely confident, will save the team more often than not, and sweeps brilliantly.

All great keepers make mistakes.

Schmeichel was not perfect, VdS has made mistakes this season. Never get as highlighted or accepted into media "lore" as quickly as Pepe's mistakes.

poor old us, so hard done to.

It was an absolute freak goal. As someone else mentioned, Agger's shove on Martins actually just made things worse, as he ended up almost 'bouncing' back to where Reina booted the ball to. 9 out of 10 times it would have ended up in the stands, but 99 out of 100 times, the ball wouldn't have bounced off 2 players and ended up conveniently infront of the striker.

Spot on assessment, I reckon.

Pepe's is very quick off the line and that is one of his strengths, it was just an unlucky incident on saturday and the beeb can go and w*** over given, foster and robinson if they want, but I wouldn't replace pepe with any keeper in the world

Another excellent point that I agree with.

Pepe's the best goalkeeper we've had since Brucie and in my humble opinion is a better keeper than Clem and the Flying Pig. If he stays he'll go on to be a legend.

He did everything he had to do - come out fast hit the ball hard and straight - unfortunately Agger's shove placed him in the way

Unlucky.

Will - How many clean sheets has he kept since he joined?

Are there questions over his long or even short term future then?

Goal was his fault, what he was thinking trying to boot the ball into the players. Bad decision that cost us points, BUT he still is one of the best keepers in the league by far and has in the main been excellent all season.

If our strikers had not been so wasteful then we would have won 3 points despite the Reina/Riise errors.

Are we sure it was actually Reina playing on Saturday? I flew back from Barcelona to Liverpool last night and in the row in front of me on the plane were Alonso and Reina. That must have been a fleeting visit by Pepe having played just the afternoon before....maybe it was some error-prone twin who turned out for us in geordie-land.

Wonder if Reina will have any competition from Carson next season:

Arsenal are tracking England Under-21 keeper Scott Carson, who is currently on loan to Charlton from Liverpool. (Various)

From the BBC Gossip Column.

If that is the case then we gotta be looking for around £7-8m surely.

Somehow I don't think thats what he was actually trying to do.

Disagree. I think he's the best goalie we've had since Clemence. I wouldn't put Grobbelaar in any kind of category frankly. Lawrence was better definitely. Despite his sobriquet, he was very fast off his line.

he is better than Grobbelaar no doubt in my mind
