Just read this in the Echo

"?But then when you go to the game and you feel the passion and the tribal nature, which is as basic as anything I?ve ever felt, it?s great fun and it?s delightful to be associated with this extraordinary club.

?I won?t be a visible owner. You?ll see me in the stand yes, but probably not so much in the directors? box as out in front meeting people and thanking them for their support, visiting to see the quality of our food service and the length of time people have to wait in line ? to get some idea as we start to build the new facility of things we can develop.

?I?m not a person who goes and hides. I?m not particularly interested in being available to the media, I?m much more interested in a relationship with the fans, finding out what?s on their mind and supporting their dreams.?

Co-owner Tom Hicks echoed his friend?s approach: ?I guess my first official game as co-owner will be March 6 against Barcelona.

?I will meet the fans, but I?ve never met anybody like George Gillett for that. I had him down for an NHL game in Dallas two weeks ago and I couldn?t stop him wandering around the stadium talking to fans.

?We went to see the match the other night between Arsenal and the Hotspurs, I thought to see the new stadium, but he kept wandering off and was talking to everybody, to fans, the waitresses, the box stewards, he was trying to see what was needed to make it better for the fans.?

?We love sports and we love passion. We love winning and I?ve never seen anything like the fans at a Liverpool match, away and at home. It?s just fabulous.

?The fans are so good and the club is so famous

?To have the privilege of having the number one club in the most popular sport in the world is really quite rare.

its one nil in the 89th minute against the mancs and little george junior keeps pulling you on the arm asking you about the pies and the coffee.

"visiting to see the quality of our food service "

I hope he likes warm Scouse pies.

It'll be one hell of a shock to him after NHL arenas with their 200 different food options, different beers on tap and people wandering around shouting 'beeeeeeeeer here', to see cans of warm Carlsberg and dodgy pies.

Although, he'll be used to strange food stuffs being as Montreal is home to poutine.

The best managers in the world are those who sweat the details. You may scoff at an owner who worries whether the fans like the coffee but that's why american businesses are so successful - they care what the customers think (or the fans in our case).

That's pretty much the difference in attitude between Europe and the new world, I include Australia etc in that. It comes down to how much you really value your customer and consumer.

We pay lip service to it over here and have an off-hand customer service manner, people actually expect it and live with it, seems we're too cool and self contained to give or expect anymore.

Thing is, it takes more than a few courses to create a genuine sense of being glad to have someones custom and treat them accordingly. It also takes some getting used to as a customer.

Kev better get ready for a couple of wealthy looking Americans asking which way is the Kop?

I'd love it if I ever saw a picture of Gillett and Hicks in jester hats, singing to YNWA with some Norwegian fans outside the Anny Road :D

Improved services inside the stadium might actually help the atmosphere in the stadium in the long run too, people might turn up earlier to the stadium rather than staying in the pub until 5 minutes before kick off. That in itself requires a shift in mindset like Rimbeux says though.

if I was ticket office manager right about now I would be s***ting myself.

:D , myabe next season we'll get through on the credit card line in under 5 hours!

How long before George decides it is safer to bunker down in the directors box?

Anyone invited him to the Oakie yet ;)

Good on him. I must admit I was impressed with him in the press cionference. He seemed like a man who was excited about the opportunity to be associated with a great club rather than a bored kid with a new plaything.

Nothing wrong with that. I?ll be in Montreal in a few weeks eating it!!

And food in American stadiums is normally limited by who sponsors it, and it is ridiculously overpriced at the top level.

You can either use cheap food as a way of laying out your stall to encourage fans to come to the stadium for a cheap night out ? or if its sold out then jack the prices up as they have nowhere else to go.

With a new stadium to pay for I wonder which option they will pick?

Gotta be my favourite. Good start but let's give 'em time to "prove their love". Having lived in the US for 7 long yrs I have seen similar 'new venture' passions die a swift death. I remain optimistic though :)

The effing Hotspurs! I envisage a lot of pisstaking from other fans if these pair of whacko's are steaming 'round the stadium talking to Pete Sampara and his ilk about some new goaltender he's seen on Champ Manager.

Hope he sort out the ticket office quickly.

Tickets on sale at the window for every game at the same time they go on sale on credit card line.

I like it an all, it's just really gloopy stuff :D

stuff in all stadiums / arenas will be partly limited to sponsors - Liverpool being a prime example with Carlsberg.

But its not always the case, certainly isn't at Madison Squre Garden and Continental Airline arena where I was at last month. Both sell a huge variety of of food and drink (and all crazy prices of course!), so they either have about 200 different food and drink sponsors, or it isn't all linked.

a few american phrases aside i dont think i could have been more impressed really. i know "proof of the pudding" and all that but they said all the right things so far, theyre keeping continuity, they are really including Rafa in the process and they are already taking the piss out of Carra's accent. Good start

he better learn which end is which quick - i can see him taking a pasting if he goes for a chat with the mancs on the Anny rd before the Utd game.

It's true. I live in Canada and while [apologies] the Americans tend to drive me nuts, they do do a lot right. I was in Scottsdale, Arizona at the beginning of January and the Hotel I stayed at the service was almost nausiatingly good!! But let's hope they just go for good pies and not Tacos and Fajitas!!

Crazy prices in Toronto too for food and drink at Hockey and Baseball games. Make it good and reasonable and they'll sell more.
