Alonso Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 So who would I buy? If only it was that simple! First of all you have to look at the current make up of the squad and if the signing of ?superstars? is gonna up set the balance by not being able to keep all the current first 11 happy with even more rotation. The one area that I think we could improve is at RB as we currently have no proven cover there and Finnan is not getting any younger. Rafa is obviously keen on Alves but personally I?d go for Richards as he?s proven in the PL, younger, and can also play CB as well as RB and RW. LB also seems some people?s priority but we already have Riise there who?s gonna take some shifting and also Insua who is coming in January who, if reports are to be believed, could be ready for the first team very shortly. Yes Bale or Baines would be a great signing but is there any need for them or would we be buying them just cos we could? Also signing the likes of Kaka or Joaquin whilst extremely exciting would they add benefit to our 11? Now IMO Kaka would definitely but Joaquin? He?s hardly set the world alight the last 18 months and is struggling since his move to Valencia plus he?d have the added pressure of settling in a new country adapting to a different style of football. Also would he really be available to buy? Kaka on the other hand would be a great signing and the one ?big name? that I?d like us to sign, again, however unrealistic. He would provide that extra bit of creativity either drifting in from the right, left, centrally or playing just off the striker. The one downside would be who to drop to accommodate him but I think that would be an acceptable headache to have providing Rafa could keep everyone happy. Still it?d take mega bucks to sign him and we?d be up against the likes of Madrid and Chelsea for his signature and given Rafa?s policy on not paying over the odds or getting into a bidding war then it?ll be highly unlikely. Zenden is arguably in his last season with us so that would mean we?d need cover there to replace him. Again there?s no point in buying a star such as a Pirlo or a Gattusso who?d expect first team football straight away, rather someone like Fabregas who?s an up and coming player who can be eased into the team slowly but surely. As for a name I haven?t got one!! With Kewell?s injury problems and Aurelio seemingly lacking the quality and fitness record required to be our first choice LW then I?d look and getting in another LW. I know we have Gonzalez and he has shown glimpses of promise but is he gonna be the real deal? Time is on his side and hopefully he?ll prove what a quality player he is but if there was a chance of securing someone along the lines of Vicente (can?t think of too many other top class LWs that MIGHT be available) then I?d take that to provide us with 2 decent options down the left. As for the RW problem then IMO the signing of Kaka would solve that as both he and Gerrard could play out there, maybe not as wingers but certainly use that as their starting positions. However as I mentioned earlier he?s highly unlikely to join. : ( That leaves us with Pennant who IMO provides decent cover there and realistically is that all we need there? When Xabi, Momo and Gerrard are all fit Rafa has shown that 9 times outta 10 Gerrard will start on the right. If we were to buy a top class RW then that would mean one of them not playing and again a good headache to have but would it cause unnecessary problems? IMO we?re covered at CB with Carragher, Agger, Paletta and Hyypia not to mention the numerous youngsters we have there (and the signing of Richards!!), so that just means we need to look at our striking options. It looks like along with Zenden this could be Fowler?s last year so that means we need to look at getting in another striker. Again would buying a world class striker up set the likes of Bellamy and Crouch who are currently the 2nd/3rd choice strikers who would then be pushed would to 3rd/4th choice? Realistically how many world class strikers can you have at your club. Currently Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal only have 2 so if they can?t get away with it could we? If we could then I?d look to bring in someone like Villa or Huntelaar whose goal scoring record is top class.

Makes me wonder why we aren't and haven't been up there challenging for the title with our squad, and why we have done so badly against the top 3 sides over the last few years. GK - sorted long term. Defence - new RB as cover and to take Finnans place over the next 18 months or so - Richards please.CB to play as Aggers long term partner, could be Paletta but Sami has little time left at the top level and Carra is nearly 30 - could turn out to be richards as well in which case get him and alves in. New LB, same as RB position to replace JAR eventually - Bale please. Midfield - Pennant not looking too good yet and distinctly lacking in bottle so far, Zenden going soon, HK injury prone - will he ever come back, Gonzales still settling in and looking injury prone. New RM at least, possibly a faster version of Xabi as well if anyone knows one? Also new LM in the next 18 months even if HK comes back to provide an alternative to Speedy. Strikers - 1 top quality striker wanted, pace, power, good goalscorer - Torres please. We need the above at least to challenge United, Chelsea and the a*** over the next few years! Remember this season we bought Pennant, Bellamy and got gonzales - Chelsea bought Shevchenko, Ashley Cole and Ballack! And no posts moaning about the lack of homegrown talent coming through please!
PhilM Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Fantasy stuff aside, I don't think we'd see Rafa going mad. I think it would be a case of him being able to spend if the right players came along rather than him signing up loads of big names willy nilly ala Chelsea.
Leo No.8 Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Without going into who I'd sign etc, I think the first two players Rafa would choose to spend big on would be Torres and Alves. Alves is obvious, and Rafa has never hidden his admiration for Torres even if he has only mentioned him in passing or when questioned. It was interesting to note when Noel White came out with his tirade which led to him resigning, there was a comment about he was 'being told by the manager they should be spending £20m on a striker'. There would probably be two candidates for that, Torres and Villa but I'd bet anything that striker was Fernando Torres.

MrNice Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 I just can't see us going out buying a number of superstars. I think the main difference will be the ability to compete for just about any one player that Rafa wants once a year, Ala the scum. an example would be Alves, we would have been able to come up with the extra funds required to close the deal. I'd say Alves and Villa would be his dream purchases, but I don't expect us to go out and sign them both, not in one season anyhow.
Ronnie Whelan Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 (edited) I think we should sign Stephen Carr only so we could line up: Carr Agger Carragher Then we could all sing "we all dream of a team of Carraghers", then we can sell him again. This post was made by someone else a few months back and i broke my sides laughing. Just thought i would point this out in case i infringe any copyrights. Edited December 5, 2006 by Ronnie Whelan
Guest RedIsMyColour Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Alves, Richards and a forward would be ideal.

Guest Parr_Zee Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 If I was manager and was given a lot of dough to spend next summer I would go for the following (based on what I feel the team is lacking): 1. Daniel Alves2. Shaun Wright-Phillips3. Gareth Barry4. Carlos Tevez5. Kevin Nolan6. Vicente This gives us a lot of pace and creativity, and a hell of a lot of strength in depth for every position.
