Bored at the mo, hows about naming a Liverpool team of signings that have excited you when signed but in the end really let you down and didn't do what you expected of them. heres mine

GK- Chris Kirkland- expected he'd be our number 1 for years to come after giving Dudek a couple of years first-never came off

RB- Rigobert Song- Hardman coming in to sort out our shakey defence accoring to Houllier!!

LB- Christian Ziege- Looked a good signing after all the hassle, couldnt defend though and was lazy

CB- Steve Staunton- 2nd time round, thought we'd made right the wrongs of selling him,no pace, seen milk turn quicker

CB- Phil Babb- After a good world cup, most expensive British player, most memorable moment was smashing nuts into post

RM- Anthony Le Tallec- Next Zidane yeah right.

CM- Paul Ince- despite his scum conenctions, thought he'd take us on that next step to win the premiership

CM- Igor Biscan- After fighting off big clubs to get him and his first 3-4 players, thought we had a coup, great cult figure, but 5.5m for a cult figure is a bit much

LM- El Hadji Diouf- Slighly out of place, but after seeing him against France, thought great signing

S- Jari Litmanen- never given the chance by Houllier and injuries restriced him

S- Fernando Morientes- thought he'd take prem by storm, never adapted

Subs.

Harry Kewell (could've made the team but still has time to win fans over, Not as bad as players in that team but msot expectations I've ever had from a signing)

John Scales (Phil Babb-mark 2)

David James (best young goalkeeping talent turns calamity)

Bruno Cheyrou (See Le Tallec)

Stan Collymore (scored goals, but attitude was terrible, could have been so much more)

Lucklily I'm too young to really remember any of Souness signings so they could quite easily feature

How can you have Kewell there and not Cisse? Its no coincidence that kewells return last season coincided with our long winning steak, Kewell is a class player! Yes he is a let down because his body keeps breaking down but that is really not his fault

I actually thought John Scales did alright, at the time thought he was a player we needed, wouldnt describe him as PB mark 2 by a long shot.

just me? - never seen him dance on a car mind you....

I thought John scales did ok.

Him, Wright and Babb/Ruddock were part of the 2nd/3rd meanest defence in season 95/96. I liked him as a player, always thought he was a very good defender who was often struck by injury.

doesn't the last bit about injuries explain in part the first?

Litmanen did actually play in about 50 games for us in a short time, despite missing a lot of time with injury. Maybe you just didn't notice him when he played, cos he was quite invisible in premiership games ;)

Litmanen was just a one club man, he never cut the mustard at Barcelona or here. Twasn't meant to be I guess.

I wouldn't put Igor in with that lot given his last season for us.

Was never played in his best position till Rafa arrived and then he really shined in alot of games in the legue and europe.

The original poster said he wasn't old enough to remember Souness signings. That would explain why Stewart, Piechnick and Dicks aren't in there. And going back from there was Hyssen and Carter.

At least in Souness's defence I expected Stewart and Dicks to be useless so the only disappointment was that we signed them at all.

exactly :D So many of Souness' signings where just chite from the outset, so I never had much expectation for any of them.

And with the likes of Rigo Song - wouldn't say he was a let down either, cos he was more of a 'fill in', a cheapo defender for the short term. I think the problem with some of the GH signings - is that he overhyped them too much. If GH had just let some players get on with things, we wouldn't think them let downs - just see them for what they where.

Jason McAteer wasn't cheap and didn't pull up too much shrubery. Bernard Diomede was another, and he had a World Cup winners medal.

Marcus Babbel only had one decent season for us too...

The final straw for the board (along with Bristol City) was when he wanted money to buy Trevor Steven and Gordon Durie..

Imagine those two playing for us?

I cant remember Igor doing much in the league. He played very well in europe away to depor, against leverkusen and then juve away but I think some people over state it.

I always felt Igor's best form for us was when he first signed and then when he partnered Sami in the middle when Henchoz went through a lot of injuries. His performance away to the blues**** was tremendous and I remember thinking that Ged had uncovered a great ball playing CB

I think yer right there for most of that however I gotta disagree with ya on Collymore... the man was a legend in his one and only season at the club. whatever about his attitude, on the pitch he was amazing. Himself and Fowler worked better together than many a partnership. I think people got it into their heads that they weren't working together and just yapped about it. thruth is they set eachother up pleanty of times, bagging s*** loads of goals each.

Collymore could have been a big man at the club had he had the mindset for it.

oh well.

Ya Biscan does have ability alright. It's a shame for his career that he came to a club as big as ours, with as much competition for places in the centre of midfield alright. he'd have developed far better in a slightly less better off club ...

anyone know how he's doing now?

Alun Evans - promising youngster signed for £100k from Wolves but disappeared from view after a great start (not overlooking his hat trick against Bayern Munich).

Istvan Kozma anyone???

He was amazing in Scotland for two or three seasons before we bought him, one of the best players ever to grace the SPL(which is not saying much I know but.????)

You sure hate those Judas's don't ya Andy? :D

I have to agree though. Do you remember when McManaman left? Houllier got on his high horse ranting and raving about how LFC would never let a player go for nothing again and if they didn't have two years or more left on their contract, they'd be sold.

Excellent I thought. That's exactly what we should do to make our club successful in the long run and make the most of our assets.

Of course, Houllier broke that rule for little Mikey who promptly messed us around until the last minute, even after Houllier had gone.

Another reason why I really soured on Houllier.
