Momo's injury shows that despite our squad strength we dont quite have two players for each position. He's probably the only player in the squad without a natural back up

I think it's more Alonso, Gerrard can 'replace' either, but is more comfortable pressing the ball and playing in front of an anchor man as Sissoko does, it is how he made his name

Agreed.

For true "balance" we may have been better offloading Zenden and keeping Didi

Read Ceefax or Teletext this morning.

Rafa said Momo (and Warnock) would be out for "a while". Which sounds a little more worrying.

Hopefully he's offically ruled out for 2-3 weeks.

he'll be back in half...

Momo gets injured, so we have to put up with Alonso and Gerrard in the centre of our midfield.

Its a hard life! :)

Fingers crossed for a speedy Momo recovery though...

Agree that they are great alternatives but even last night when Momo went off Stevie and Alonso were leaving too big a gap between defence and midfield, we will be fine against the lower teams but we need cover when we play the better ones. Can we take Didi on a months loan? :)

Nail on head.

Momos's injury highlights the one major flaw in our summer planning. Had Momo been ruled out for the season it would have been a disaster, and that's not being melodramatic. The only 'cover' we have for Momo is Steven Gerrard, and that is patently ludicrous considering he's our most potent attacking force. Neither Zenden or Alonso arer in any way, shape or form, back ups for Momo.

I said so at the time, and I'll say it again, it was a big big mistake letting Hamann go. Sure, I don't know exactly what Didi would or wouldn't have ben prepared to do, but he clearly loved the club, and I'm sure the few bob it would have taken to bribe him to stay for 2 more years would have been money very well spent.

I think you are forgetting the all-action midfielder that is Salif Diao.

Alonso is far more suited to the sitting midfielder role than steven gerrard ie hamman

Gerrard can do the sissoko role - ie bombing about winning the ball etc

We will miss sissoko as he brings lots of stregths to the team, but we will be replacing him in the middle with gerrard who brings even more to the team.

I like the alonso/gerrard partnership and I think it will work as long as alonso is very disciplined. We can now also play gerrard AND two proper wingers with both alonso and gerrard able to find them

There is drawbacks to sissoko not playing, but there is also benefits as now gerrard will play in the middle

Although in this particular 'nail-on-head' instance, Hamann isn't cover for Momo either...

Momo could be back for the derby according to the Offal.

Liverpool have confirmed that Momo Sissoko will be out of action for two weeks with the knee injury he sustained during last night's Champions League qualifier in Kiev.

Sissoko left the stadium on crutches and had a scan on Merseyside today which confirmed the Reds' initial diagnosis.

"Momo had a scan today which showed a tear of the medial ligament in his left knee," said Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton.

"We do not expect him to be able to play or train for the next two weeks."

Sissoko will definitely miss this weekend's Premiership clash with West Ham United at Anfield but could be back for the derby at Goodison on September 9.

Jeebus us mere mortals would be out for at least 6-8 weeks with a partial medial tear and even then only light training - if it is 2 weeks then its true MOMO IS A FREAK OF NATURE! (in the nicest possible way of course :D )

How did Warnock get injured? He always seems to get injured flying into a tackle.

What ? In that, like Sissoko, he isn't also a fine exponent of the 'screening' role in front of the back four, and just an all round great defensive midfielder ?

All well and good in the short term, but not if Momo sustains a long term injury. Alonso is a prompter/playmaker from a deep position. He is not a defensive midfielder in the Hamann or Sissoko sense.

erm cause Didi wanted to leave

no he didn't

he was told his playing time would be limited because of momo stevie xabi AND zenden

even then he struggled to leave.

momo stevie xabi and didi is a different story.

besides, so what if he did want to leave???

erm cause Didi wanted to leave

It amazes me how people keep saying we should of kept Didi. He had a clause in his contract which was enacted last year which gave him an option to stay this year.

He chose to leave so he could play regularly. End of.

If you still think we should of kept him, please tell me who out of Xabi, Momo and Stevie we should drop to allow him to play because one of those would of had to make way for him to play regularly.

Sorry for the rant but someone has to do it!

Yep, gutted Didi left. I've never rated Zenden at all.

Put it this way, if we were playing an important match and one of our midfielders got injured, who would you prefer to bring on - Zenden or Didi?

Ooooh, look at you with your rolling eyes

Although Momo is a great defensive midfielder, he brings much more to the side than a screening role. He is defensive in an attacking/proactive way, whereas Didi used to sit and sweep up. I would much rather see Momo playing further forward on the hunt alongside Xabi who sits deep, than Momo sitting deep with Stevie or Xabi forward.

In this sense, I don't see Didi as a replacement for Momo.

I am sorry about that.
