would we be happy with an extra 6 points but still not win it? Are we at the end of our improvement stage. Win or bust?

i'd be happy with 6 less points so long as we won it

Improvement from last season is really now about finishing higher than Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal and the other 36 League sides.

There's plenty of improvement in us

Would be happy with somewhere near 85 points. More than that and we'll probably win it

The most important task is to take points off the other contenders. I agree that 85+ could win it, but obviously only if people take more points off the chavs.

given that from october 1st until the end of the season we finished top, i'd like to see us really hit the ground running this time. make a real statement of intent and get the points up there on the board early.

Chelsea took a lot of points from us & the mancs last season. If we both and/or Arsenal can take points from them, no longer will it take silly points to win it.

Also, how long is Cech out for? Cudicini looks suspect, so if he's out for a month or so, they could drop some early-season points

Taking point off Chelsea is more important than increasing the overall tally. We simply cannot afford to give them a six point start again. Taking a point each or three each from the two games is a minimum. We want to be taking 4 points from them really though.

I thought ManU beat them?

they did

between the top 4 last year IIRC

Chelsea P6 W5 L1 D0 pts15

Man U P6 W3 L1 D2 pts11

Liverpool P6 W1 L4 D1 pts4

Arsenal P6 W1 L4 D1 pts4

He was very poor for Riise's goal yesterday, so here is hoping Cech is ruled out for the season, but not before the window closes cos they would probably buy Buffon.

maybe so.

he didn't inspire confidence all over. Good save from Aurelio, but looked shaky in general

If we had won the two games against Chelsea, home and away last season we would have won the league.

That is how close we came last year despite getting only 10 points from the fist 8 games.

Charlie Nicholas would be proud of that.

You can't say that though, Chelsea lost their last two games having secured the title - we used to do that sort of thing too.

Ah those were the years when we were struggling at the top of the table.

82-83 was the classic

lost 5 of our last 7 having won the League at a canter - 'on the crest of a slump' was how Tommo described it

That's why I said probably ;) Can see Chelsea dropping points at the start of the season with them being underdone.

It's true that we can't allow Chelsea to do the double on us again, those "6 point games" that we seem to lose way too much

They'll prob buy Buffon this week...

Equally, you can't suppose they wouldn't have lost those games had they not already won the League

Cheers for that. Some interesting stats on LFChistory.net for that season. We still toppped the table by 11 points, even losing to Watford of all clubs, who we helped nudge into second spot. Too bad for them, these days that would have got them to Europe. ;)

Bob's curtain call that year was, plus we got the league cup and Rushie netted 24 league goals.

Hard act to follow by anyones standards these days.

i'd say it was more likely than not, they only lost 3 all season until they won the League then lost two as soon as it didn't matter anymore :hmm:

all ifs and ands in any case

If Chelsea really are as tired as Mourinho claims after deciding to apparently not bother with a pre-season then we really need to come flying out of the blocks.

As the season goes on no doubt Chelsea will get up to fitness and Mourinho will sort out what his best team is, so we need to get going straight away and make them have to chase us.

The game at Stamford Bridge is already going to be massive.

I reckon the top 5 will be something like below, and it will be touch and go who will be champions out of us and chelsea. If we take points off them then I really think we're in business.

Liverpool and Chelsea 85-90 points.

Man Utd 79 points.

Arsenal 75 points.

Tottenham 70 poins.
