I wouldnt be surprised to see him as a squad player who can cover Finnan, and may also be cover for Agger and Carragher, now that Hyppia is getting on a bit. Not sure if that means no Alves next summer though. If the money is available, I would expect us to go for him.

It was a real shame that Collymore could not live up to his potential. I used to watch him at Southend, when he was there for 8 months. The guys was so talented, it was unbelieveable. He used to run rings around the players at Championship level. He had most of the attributes needed to be a World Class player, except the one that you need the most, which is a strong desire and focus for football. Unfortunately, his illness took its toll and he never performed consistently in the end.

But your argument does not take into account that the game is played at a faster pace, with more athletic players. Players are fitter now than in the past, mainly through better eating habits and the advance of sport science. As a result, a player has to be close to his physical maximum to perform, otherwise they get found out. Also, there is no relevance between high wages and a players ability to perform physically and mentally. I am left puzzled by Rafa's team selection at times, but I do understand that the team will change for tactical or physical reasons. Many of these decisions, we will never be privvy to.
