He is without a doubt Germany's greatest ever footballer and as a result, in the eyes of (too) many, Beckenbauer can do no wrong. For too long now, there's been wall-to-wall Beckenbauer in Germany's media, to the point where even his son said he stopped watching TV so he could avoid the scheidt his dad was constantly coming out with. Personally I can't stand the bloke. I think he's an arrogant twot whose exceptional ability on the football field has made people think they should take seriously whatever he says on whatever topic.

When and where did he say this? I can't find anything more recent than a German website from Monday saying that Bayern are planning without him.

I get the impression you are a little over-sensitive whenever you percieve criticism of Americans as being unfair - I can relate to that as I get p*ssed off by the usual German jokes that have never changed in 60 years, but there's no reason to see prejudice everywhere. My original point, however, remains - if those mentioned in the article are unhappy with "our" game, no-one is forcing them to play it so they should IMHO do something else and stop messing around with it. By the way, the link was interesting.

Why don't they just invent some other game where they can all wear all-over body armour and play on foam rubber pitches, call it "soccer" or whatever other stupid name they can think up and stop pissing around with real football. I tend to agree. All this nit-picking and the contant attempts to prove Chelsea are in some way not as good as other good sides have been smacks a little of jealousy and comes across, to me at least, as being rather small-time and petty. Let 'em get on with it, let Maureen rant and rave and let our football do the talking as we quietly creep up behind them
