Predictions for the Italian game fixing charges
Leo No.8 replied to growler's topic in General Football Discussion
If they don't relegate them, the s*** will hit the fan anyway. The clubs who want up into Serie A will be taking further legal action, and Moratti has threatened to move Inter to another country if the clubs in question aren't dealt with properly! I don't think last night will change anything - at the end of the day this affects many more clubs than just Juve, Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina, and any perceived lack of justice will cause more damage than several of the big teams spending a few seasons in the lower reaches... -
To be honest - that game would have gone to penalties anyway. France had been on top for a while without really looking like scoring, and it had been heading that way pretty much since Italy equalised. Trezeguet still would have taken one, and Barthez still wouldn't have got anywhere near the Italian penalties. I just don't think it made any difference in the end. Also Materazzi always strikes me as an odious individual, overly aggressive and a wind-up merchant. I think I'd probably want to butt him if I met him in all honesty; of course Zidane doing it when he did was pretty damn crazy, but as I said I believe the outcome would have been the same regardless. It was Italy's year - I hope the abiding memories are of them breaking their penalty curse, and their classic game against Germany. Zinedine Zidane should be remembered as the great player of his generation, not for that stupid headbutt (which incidentally I'm sure didn't hurt Materazzi at all - if he wanted to hurt him he'd have stuck his head in his face). Sadly I'm not sure that will be the case - the press will no doubt cast him as a great villain from now on...

Absolutely - him and Zambrotta were fantastic. I think the thing to learn is that if you have a defensive midfielder of the quality of Gattuso, and are well organised enough, your full-backs can get forward pretty much at will. Its about being positive and letting the opposition worry about you rather than the other way round. Grosso in particular played almost like a winger at times. If their wide midfielder is tracking back with your attacking full-back, they aren't in a position to cause you problems at the other end...

Fat, officious, miserable looking w@nkers are two a penny at FIFA, you wouldn't be able to tell one from the other...

I think he's 31, which would make him 35 at the next World Cup. Every chance he'll be there IMO... -

This WC retirees and final world cups

I reckon Cannavaro and Nesta will still be playing centre half for Italy in four years time if they want to, and haven't decided to retire after winning it (I haven't heard that to be the case yet myself). They'll both be about 36/37, and these Italian defenders go on to that age and more most of the time. Just look at Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta... -
Spare a thought for Alessandro Nesta
Leo No.8 replied to Cobs 's topic in General Football Discussion
How about sparing a thought for Paolo Maldini. One of the best players in Italy's history, they must have won the World Cup in 82 just before he came through, then just as he finishes they win it again and his replacement scores the winning penalty! -
Shame he didn't trip and impale himself on the trophy...

Then he went and took the winning penalty! Some story indeed and a great pen considering the pressure. Grosso is certainly one hell of a player, Inter will have two quality full-backs with him and Zanetti next season. He gets forward so well I'd imagine Pleat has wet dreams about him...

Between Cannavaro and Pirlo for me after last night's moment of madness from Zidane. Its a close thing actually - Pirlo's delivery from set-pieces last night was brilliant, a constant thorn in the French team's side. The French aren't usually weak from aerial attack with Thuram, Gallas etc, they were made to look that way by Pirlo's quality.

I love all these people on here who leap to Ronaldo's defence simply because of their blind hatred for all things English. To say Ronaldo hasn't been more cuplable than any other player in this tournament for hurling himself to the ground is absolutely laughable. Some like Henry have been guilty a couple of times, wheras this little twerp's cheating has been almost incessant through round after round. He's been exactly the same over here ever since he joined United - a player brushes against him and he falls to his knees and throws his arms up into the air. Forget England, its nothing to do with England - he's a diving, cheating c*nt end of.

Ze Roberto and Ballack but no Riquelme? Totti being in there just shows how poor strikers were in general during this tournament. I thought 'Totti WTF?', then couldn't think of any other strikers who'd been any good! Drogba looked OK but the Ivory Coast went out early...
-
The press have missed the real story here. I think its fairly clear that Freddie Shephard is in fact shagging Mrs Beckham...

At this tournament you could name Cannavaro, Carvalho, Gallas, Thuram, Nesta, Marquez, Ayala and Osorio without even having to think hard. I rate Terry really highly, but he wasn't anywhere near at his best in Germany.

Can't imagine Barragan can have been too motivated by us looking to bring in Alves who basically plays in his position, when we've already got Finnan, Kromkamp etc. Chances of first team football in the near to mid future would seem limited. Better for his development to be playing proper football, so with the buy-back clause this could be good business all-round...

beckenbauer against cheeting

To be fair, Wenger publically lambasted Eboue for his dive in the final... -
And Xabi - he gave Rafa some ideas on what he thought we should do differently after reviewing tapes of our performances! I'll bet Rafa was creaming his kecks at that... 'Xabi - you had me at hello; but these tactical observations...Dios Mio, Fantastico!'
