Speaking of which, FC Copenhagen fans took it well getting beat last minute of the derby today... if you can count beating up the riot police with metal poles ripped out of the stadium as 'taking it well'
I think it's not just about the player - VVD and the price - but at least as much about what problem does he solve. Last season we had over half of the league fancying that the only way they could get points from us was by going very direct and hump it into the box at every opportunity. Bournemouth a great example with all their long throws at Anfield, and Leicester killed us by basically launching it from everywhere and not even trying to pass in their own half. So they get to take away one of our greatest strengths - the gegenpressing - and to exploit one of our weaknesses - aerial defence and dealing with second and third balls. In particular that is exploiting Lovren's weaknesses, but we also saw teams trying to get at Milner more and more as the season went on. It seems to me that VVD directly addresses that. He is a monster in the air - maybe the best in the league - and quick on the turn too. Does fixing our key exploitable weakness and winning let's say 12-15 more points per season seem worth £60M? Maybe it is easier to swallow the price when thought of in that way.
What, a high pressing 4-3-3 with a false nine, wingers for full backs and highly attacking style. A club culture around no stars and hard work, and generally positive demeanour in victory and defeat. No, they would never take to that at Barca.
