billybunter Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I was giving it a hefty rendition today and some girl chimes up and says she was in that musical. I didnt have a clue what she was talking about, but i looked it up and she was right. The song was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1945. I had no idea that it went back that far....always thought it was a pop song first
Siang Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 i think it did... i went for children's christmas musical last yr with the theme being music by Rodgers n Hammerstein, the last song for that nite was YNWA!!!! But if someone who's into the music scene and in the know how, prob he or she can clarify..
_00_deathscar Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 ^ What he said. Gerry and the Pacemakers did a remake of it.
billybunter Posted May 5, 2006 Author Posted May 5, 2006 Just read a little about it...apparerently the song had a special resonance during the time as it gave a lot of people hope during the war.
Guest AnfieldGrass Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 It's been covered to death. Even Elvis did a rather sublime gospel version of YNWA.
R A Softlad Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Indeed it's the showstopper from 'Carousel' by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
_00_deathscar Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 It's been covered to death. Even Elvis did a rather sublime gospel version of YNWA. There's a few good piano pieces without the lyrics too - notably Nina Simone I believe.

Guest 7777 Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 No, but they have landed on the moon.I thought they were from the moon
DJM Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Celtic fans claim to have sung it first - hard to believe Carousel was popular amongst Celtic fans in the 50's I say

matty Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Celtic fans claim to have sung it first - hard to believe Carousel was popular amongst Celtic fans in the 50's I say I've heard they were more into Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
£440,000 Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I've heard they were more into Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. No, they prefer modern opera to musical theatre. I've heard their working up something from 'Nixon in China' as their new song.
Lee W Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Celtic fans claim to have sung it first - hard to believe Carousel was popular amongst Celtic fans in the 50's I say They did sing it first, but not at the game because they were always off their faces on Scotch when they heard it at the theatre and couldn't remember the words - or so the story goes.
matty Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 No, they prefer modern opera to musical theatre. I've heard their working up something from 'Nixon in China' as their new song. Perhaps not something from Jerry Springer the Opera though?
fyds Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Breaking news:::::::::: America has landed on the moon:::::::::::::::::::::::::: Incredible innit? I think we need a 'General Ignorance' forum! Hey - did you know Everton used to play at Anfield but had a problem with the rent? Or that we used to wear white shorts like - all the time!
