Cunny Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 (edited) Do they have to play in the 3rd qualifying round for next season or do they qualify automatically for the group stage? If it's the latter, the second place team would have to play in the 3rd qualifying round? Edited April 24, 2006 by Cunny
Andy @ Allerton Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 Someone in work reckons that if Arsenal win it this season then.. 1. Spurs are out2. 2nd and 3rd place in the league as is (Liverpool and Man U) will have to qualify for it3. Arsenal get moved to the automatic qualification place (as if they'd finished 2nd) Dunno if this is true? Very funny if so - and I would want them to win it just to annoy Whiskynose.
Gomez Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 I heard that if arsenal win it and finish outside the top 4, they will declince the opportunity to play in it next year because anything else would make Wenger and Dein corrupt hypocrites?

John am Rhein Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 I am told (not sure how reliably) that: 1) if Arsenal win the European Cup they go straight into next season's first round 2) whoever comes second in the Premier League (probably the scum flith but just possibly us) still go into next season's first round 3) the Scottish champions (Celtic) have to play a qualifier to make space for Arsenal
Tonto Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 Does that then affect our seeding for the qualifier draw? Is seeding based on league position or the club's individual coefficient?
baja the hut Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 I might be naiive, but if arsenal finish fifth and go to the third qualifier, wont it mean.... a) we got royally screwed last time around by a biased FA. b) this is not fair... c) arsenal should play 3 legs like we did...

_00_deathscar Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 No the rules were the same as they are now. The English FA just used a loophole last season to allow Everton in. That loophole, thanks to last season's madness has now been closed.
Jim D Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 were the rules not changed to let you in? champions didnt qualify automatically, but cause you didnt qualify by league positions they changed the rule to accomodate. Ahh the myth again rears its ugly head again about the rules being changed for Liverpool to participate. No rules were changed to allow Liverpool in last season, the only thing that was changed was the interpretation of the rule.........unfortunately our own FA couldn't make the right decision if their own backsides were on fire. They clearly took advantage of the "grey area" in the ruling so they could force UEFA's hand into allowing 5 English teams into the Champions League. UEFA were always going to allow their title holder to defend the trophy, as indicated this season by Arsenal qualifying in the expense of Spurs. In 2000, Real Madrid were put in ahead of Real Zaragoza and rightly so, they were the title holders and qualify by right. Something which the FA backed and supported previously in 2004, but convienently took advantage of it in 2005. Maybe the cronies at the FA are more smarter than we think?
John am Rhein Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 The rules WERE changed. Last season it was at the FA's discretion. From this season onwards UEFA (FIFA?) made it explicit that the European Champions would qualify to guard against future idiocy such as the FA's last season. Given half a chance, the FA will f*ck it up again - especially since their 2nd favourite club Spurs are in the running.

Given half a chance, the FA will f*ck it up again - especially since their 2nd favourite club Spurs are in the running. Question is then, why would UEFA leave it up to the respective FA's discretion? Surely UEFA themselves would have every intention of having their own Title Holders in their competition the following season. Only thing I can think of is that UEFA expected the FA to enter the European Champions regardless. Therefore the Title Holders (Highest seed) themselves get precedence over all the other teams in the Champions League. So based on this fact, the teams from England that qualified for Europe the order of qualification would of been: 1. Liverpool (Title Holders)2. Chelsea (English Champions)3. Arsenal 4. Manchester United Therefore it would of been Manchester United taking Everton's place not Liverpool
R A Softlad Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 were the rules not changed to let you in? champions didnt qualify automatically, but cause you didnt qualify by league positions they changed the rule to accomodate. Shouldn't have had to been though OM, the directive was to allow the winners in and demote 4th place (Everton) to the UEFA. The FA bottled that, depsite what they had outlined a season or so earlier re: Arsenal and Chelsea. Hence the UEFA clarification this season.
SkippyjonJones Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 On the fa site from 2 years ago was a release saying that if Arsenal or Chelsea won the CL and finished outside the top 4 then they would be entered into the CL at the expense of the 4th placed team. Last year the FA explained that that situation was only a guideline and not a rule and immediately took the page down. They?d built up the Everton effort to get to 4th place so much that they had painted themselves into a corner and passed the buck back to UEFA.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 who gives a monkey's anyway? The rules are now clear. If Arsenal win it, then fair enough, they deserve to defend it
