Gerrard back in the middle next year?

Rafa clearly wants to play Momo and Xabi in the middle

 

I know there are different systems to be played and a bit of rotation but which system has Momo or Xabi on the flanks in a midfield 4? none

 

which leaves Gerrard on the right if we play 4-4-2 or a different formation, perhaps similar to the one we employed at Newcastle

 

are we agreed that we are still unlikely to see Gerrard in the middle of 4 in midfield unless Momo or Xabi are injured?

 

and otherwise, subject to personnel, here's a new formation:

that also works admirably, and keeps Finnan in the side, but no Kewell, I see

 

well anyway, it doesn't matter as HK can interchange with SWP if that were the case - what matters is the formation, which I now think can work, as we have the players available to cope with it

That's the formation I think he'll go for as well. Mirrors Chelsea doesn't it. Isn't that how he played at Valencia?

Why is it so clear that Rafa wants to play Momo and Xabi together in midfield? Momo has benefitted from the fact that we have no right midfielder and Gerrard has spent most of his time out there. If we had signed, say Simao, I dont think Momo would have played as many games as he has this season.

 

For what it's worth I think we'll see a mixture of the system above (i.e. 451/433/4231 combination) and also a straight 442 with Gerrard, Momo and Xabi being rotated regularly.

But Gerrard and Alonso have both looked better with Momo in the side. Assuming Xabi is a given in CM, we play much better when there's another CM to free up Gerrard from his defensive duties.
