Should we break bank for Walcott

Everyone who is saying "£12m is crazy money" is totally missing the point surely.

It only becomes £12m if he turns into a superstar, in which case his actual value will probably be double that and more.

If he doesn't live up to his potential, we probably only pay half that quoted sum and still get a fee when we sell him on.

It isn't anything like as big a risk as if we were paying £12m up front, so its unfair to paint it that way.

Personally I hope we match Arsenal's offer - I think this kid'll be a huge star and he's a red to boot...

There's something smelly about this whole Walcott saga....

Both Mark Lawrenson and Ian Rush have been in the press today to say almost exactly the same about Walcott:

Quotes from Lawro on football 365

Quotes from Rushie in the Echo

I found this as well on liverpoolway:

Something's cooking........ :detective:

Both Rush and Lawro ( ) offered him the same advise. Stay at Southampton a bit longer in order to prolong his education.

Why don't they advise that he sign his 1st pro contract with Liverpool and then go on loan to, for example, Southampton.

He's not 17 yet, he's not a pro yet. If he don't sign for Southampton there won't be a transfer fee. Any fee will be set by a tribunal and it won't be £15m.

Go get him Rafa.

Or am I totally wrong (again).

It seems he's got a pre-contract agreement with Southampton to sign his first pro deal with them, so I don't think waiting is an option.

It is thought the boyhood Arsenal fan would prefer a move to the Gunners, but Chelsea have reportedly vowed to top any other offer Walcott receives in their efforts to tempt him to Stamford Bridge.

WTF? At least they could've done their home work first before putting up a story :hmm:

Hadn't picked that up. Cheers Leo.

So it's more a case of paying Southampton a fee to rip up the pre-nup.

I think this is a fair point. £12M without any conditions would be very risky, but a £5M fee upfront with a further £7M based on appearances, although expensive for a 16 year old, wouldn't be anything like as painful if he failed to live up to his potential. I doubt whether his wages would be sky-high either.

That's about the upper-limit though I'd say. If Chelsea/Arsenal start to talk about £8M up front/a further £12M on appearances then forget it.

Teamtalk have the same Arsenal fan story. Probably the same news source.

not worth breaking the bank for a guy who has only impressed in the championship. Every year there is another "amazing" teenager who is going to change the football world and how many of them actually do? Apart from our home grown talents only Rooney has justified the hype, players like joe cole, defoe, francis jeffers, james milner have all been given the same press treatment as rooney was given and walcott is currently getting.

Since we got Sky covering so much more of the game there have only been a handful of youngsters that I've seen at 15 that were head and shoulders above everyone else - Giggs, Owen, Cole, Rooney and Walcott. I think Cole is only now starting to find his feet but is still an England regular and the others are arguably the best British players in their positions of their generation.

There are never any guarantees but at the age of 16 Walcott looks as good as any of them did and leagues above his peers.

he obviously wants to go to Arsenal... I really don't know where all this 'wants to go to Liverpool' stuff is coming from...

We haven't got the money to blow on a promising youngster... amazes me how delusional some people are... that the record transfer coming from our club would be for a 16 year old.

You do have to ask, why the delay?

If the payments are structured..say £5m up front and the balance on performances etc then we SHOULD be interested in this apparently very special player. He looks to be the best and most potentially valuable prospect since the likes of Rooney and Owen.In a couple of years, barring injuries,he could be worth £20m.Why should we not in forefrunt for signing this allegedly Red fanatic?
