Gerrard could face FA ban for three matches

Steven Gerrard faces the prospect of a three-game suspension if the Football Association charge him and he is found guilty of violent behaviour following the melee during Liverpool's 2-0 defeat of Newcastle at Anfield.

 

Lee Bowyer was sent off after a challenge on Xabi Alonso while Peter Crouch was cautioned for pushing the Newcastle midfielder. As players from both teams jostled each other Gerrard appeared to put his hands around Alan Shearer's neck. Guidelines to referees say that though a push in the chest can be a caution, putting hands on an opponent's face or neck is a red-card offence.

 

The FA will today study referee Mark Halsey's report, which is unlikely to confirm that he saw and dealt with the Gerrard incident at the time. This would leave the Liverpool midfielder open to a charge from the FA, who will review a video of what happened at Anfield.

 

FA rules for incidents not seen by the referee stipulate any charge will be issued on the second working day and the case heard by the end of the week. Gerrard would have to be charged by tomorrow with the case heard on Friday.

Yeah, Gerrard only ran in cos Shearer was giving it the "Billy-Big-b****x" and started laying into Crouch and Finnan.

Surely it was dealt with at the time? The ref saw everything that went on as did the linesman, whom Halsey consulted immediately. The linesman pointed at various people and Halsey then sent off Bowyer and cautioned Crouch. If they do charge Gerrard, then Shearer, Carragher, Finnan and a few other Newcastle players will also have to be. I can't see the FA making that big a deal of the situation as it certainly doesn't warrant it and it wasn't a dirty game before or after.

Have a look at the pictures once again and you will see it was definitely not Shearer's neck, but Bowyer's!

They can get fecked if they do anything to him. How about all the times Shearer does stuff to people and isn't caught. He has pretty much elbowed everyone in Europe's head.

just seen a replay and shearer had his hand round the back of Gerrards head also, so, both should be treated the same way.

Meanwhile Liverpool have been told that no action will be taken against Steven Gerrard following the melee surrounding Lee Bowyer's sending off in the Boxing Day victory over Newcastle.

 

A number of players - including the Liverpool skipper and Alan Shearer - clashed after Bowyer's tackle on Xabi Alonso.

 

However the Football Association's Compliance Unit said that the matter is now closed after yesterday rejecting Bowyer's appeal.

 

The Newcastle midfielder will now serve a three-match ban. The 28-year-old received a straight red card from referee Mark Halsey for serious foul play for his challenge on Alonso.

 

"Lee Bowyer's claim for wrongful dismissal was rejected at a disciplinary commission hearing on Thursday," said a statement on the FA's official website, www.thefa.com.

 

"He will therefore serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect."
