AnfieldCop Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 According to Liverpool.no we played Rochdale in a friendly today. Winning 2-1 when the game was called off because of a serious injury to one of the Rochdale players. Line up: Pepe, Johnson, Kelly, Agger, Robinson, Lucas, Adam, Shelvey, Eccleston, Carroll, Pacheco. Goals: Johnson, Eccleston
schmuckdonald Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Saw that before. Interesting that Kelly played at CB.
Clay Davis Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Saw that before. Interesting that Kelly played at CB.Has he been quoted as saying that's where he thinks he's best? Or have I just made that up.
schmuckdonald Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Has he been quoted as saying that's where he thinks he's best? Or have I just made that up. Not a clue. Don't see it, personally.
Clay Davis Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Not a clue. Don't see it, personally. He's got all the physical attributes to play there, but as we know CB is a position with much more than that. I guess the only way you find out whether he has the concentration, positioning, awareness and general game nous to play there is by giving him a go and having a look in training. GloJo is a shoe in to start, but Kelly is at an age where he needs a lot of games. Maybe developing another position for him is a way to give him that.

He's been a right back for nigh on three years now. Completely different being responsible for a corridor of space on the flank than being 360 degrees aware. Yeah, he needs games. Still concerned that our combination of GloJo and Massive Martin is prone to injuries.
Clay Davis Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Yeah, he needs games. Still concerned that our combination of GloJo and Massive Martin is prone to injuries.Arise, Sir Flanno.
schmuckdonald Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Arise, Sir Flanno. Doni still has Flanno flashbacks, I bet.
Clay Davis Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Doni still has Flanno flashbacks, I bet. That was hilarious, looking back. One of the craziest games in recent years. I actually don't think Flanno is THAT bad. He's good on the ball (despite those mistakes) and strong in the tackle. Will probably make a semi-decent Championship full back in the end.

Think he'll be ok to be carried if needs be but isn't a long term solution to anything for us.
Bailo Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I saw the Rochdale lad tweet his thanks to our medical staff - what did he do? Weirdly low-key this considering the lineup.
Benitez Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 I saw the Rochdale lad tweet his thanks to our medical staff - what did he do? Weirdly low-key this considering the lineup. "Physio Andy Thorpe explains the extent of Reece’s injury: “Reece fell awkwardly on his ankle during the game resulting in him dislocating his ankle and fracturing his tibula. He has also suffered soft tissue damage." http://www.rochdaleafc.co.uk/news/article/reece-injury-293311.aspx
RedMersey Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Weirdly low-key this considering the lineup.Guess that's the point. To keep the players away from what they were exposed to in the US.
Bliki Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Kelly has played CB for the England U-21 and in the games I have watched he has actually been very good.
KD07 Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) He'd be the perfect glass man to replace a fellow glass man who is reportedly leaving. Edited August 6, 2012 by KD07
Flasher Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Has he been quoted as saying that's where he thinks he's best? Or have I just made that up. Centre back is his 1st position.
Maldini Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I'm heading along yeah, I imagine it'll be all reserves

Kvarme Ate My Food Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Aye. Just think the time has passed. He's been a right back for nigh on three years now. Carragher was playing at fullback for 5 or 6 years before he settled into the centre-half position.
schmuckdonald Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Carragher was playing at fullback for 5 or 6 years before he settled into the centre-half position. While this is true is he the exception or the rule? Jamie is a remarkable case.
Swan Red Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 While this is true is he the exception or the rule? Jamie is a remarkable case. He is but he was coached for it and you'd think if the core skills are there Kelly could be coached accordingly. I think the awareness is as much down to coaching as natural talent.

I think the awareness is as much down to coaching as natural talent. This is true but I still think Carragher had an extra something that made him a brilliant centre back. He had such a competitive drive. I hope I'm completely wrong but I don't see Martin Kelly as a centre back. Then again, it's hard to doubt me with my background in football scouting and coaching. Ha.

Yeah it's fair I'm not really convinced about Kelly at RB or CB. I think he could push on to become a really good player but I don't think he's there yet. I do think if he can become a good RB he could similarly become a decent CB.
Cobs Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I think he's a cert for CB - at some point. This season may be the start of it.
