Stevie H Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 could apparently become the first player in 40 years to have spent 6 seasons at liverpool without winning anything, according to l'equipe on twitter.

A fairly arbitrary and spiteful statistic that. He's played in a CL final for liverpool and been a Premier League runner up. No medals for either but both are more significant events than domestic cup wins.
Stevie H Posted October 28, 2011 Author Posted October 28, 2011 yeah seemed a bit of a dig of a comment really didn't it? don't think it's so much a slight on dirk as it is just where we've been the past five years or so. though as you say he's still played and scored in a european cup final, something most will never do.

fred Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Do they not do runners up medals in CL finals? They do afaik, but winning a runners up medal isn't really winning is it.

No medals for either but both are more significant events than domestic cup wins. Coming 2nd in the league is a much better indicator of consistency than a cup run that most likely includes lower league teams on the path to the final. But if you have that already then winning the FA Cup is more significant I would contend.

Kvarme Ate My Food Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 it is about time we f***ing won something though.I know we're spoilt but even through lean times we've never had to wait long for a trophy.

Leo No.8 Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 (edited) Why the f*ck do L'Equipe care about this? Is Patrick Barclay guest writing for them? Edited October 28, 2011 by Leo No.8
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I haven't read the piece in question, but it doesn't have to be taken as a dig.
David Hodgson Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 First is first Second is nowhere You know that I do, and I wish that was still the case, but the rules got re-written when the 'European Super League' (aka CL) was invented. The minute the domestic cups got downgraded, as a consequence, the concept of 'wining something' for its own sake, changed. Notwithstanding that actually seeing your team lift a trophy and the final day out itself are the stuff of great memories, there's a strong case for now saying that coming runner up in the big competitions trumps getting medals in the lesser ones. It's not how it should be, but it's the way it's become.

Guy_Incognito Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I choose to read it as endorsement of our illustrious history.

aka Dus Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I didnt read it as a dig when it first came up a few days ago. IIRC, Dirk actually commented on it / was asked about it. We need to win something this season - 4th place and a pot preferably.
honourablegeorge Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 could apparently become the first player in 40 years to have spent 6 seasons at liverpool without winning anything, according to l'equipe on twitter. It's called "Pulling an Arsenal". Well, it would be if anyone stayed at Arsenal that long.
Epic Swindle Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 It's an interesting stat to be honest. I know we got to the CL final again but Dirk for me represented a shift in philosophy for Benitez, especially when he ended up as a winger, and one focused primarily on stopping the opposition. He was a godsend in those big CL games but I don't think we needed him as much domestically. Apparently Rafa said he chose him over Alves. It would have been interesting to see what direction we'd gone if we'd bought a proper right sided player instead of spreading our money around on Dirk and Pennant.

They wouldn't sell him. He bought Kuyt as a striker, Alves is a full back in case you hadn't noticed.
