Gerrard: In the best shape he has been for 10 years

"I have confidence in what I can do," he told the Daily Express.

"I am going to be in the best condition physically going into this season that I have been for the last 10 years.

"I am working doubly hard on my body, on my core and on strengthening my groin, which I have suffered with.

"The operation went well and I have nearly double the strength in the groin now than before. The physios at Liverpool are measuring that on a weekly basis and the results show that.

"I know I will be rusty in friendlies but I have confidence that I am going to be the freshest I have been, both mentally and physically, for a long, long time."

"For two or three hours each day I will have to work on my body to make sure I am right," he said.

"But I don't see that as a chore. This is me getting right for Liverpool Football Club.

"I have started doing yoga a couple of times a week as well. It absolutely wipes you out. People who think you turn up and you're just posing in different shapes should have a go!

"I am enjoying it after the sessions because I am feeling the benefits. That is part of the reason why my groin feels so good just now.

"I've not kicked a ball for a long time, probably the longest I have gone in my career, and I can't wait to get back now."

“I am excited about playing under Kenny Dalglish, just like the team did at the end of the season, which was going forward. We were playing with bottle and character and going all out to beat teams. And that always suits my style of playing.”

Have to admit I am really excited to see him turn out for us next season. Not just in terms of how he will thrive under Kenny, but Stevie has quenched my concerns about him as an ageing player. I was worried he wouldn't be able to adapt his game when his legs started going, but his performances this past season have put paid to that. He is maturing into a really mature and disciplined player with great decisionmaking. Exactly what you'd want in a senior player, albeit not always what we've come to expect from Stevie.

And I am really encouraged to see that he looks to be looking after himself so well. Will be very interesting to see how he looks physically once the season gets underway. And call me a hippie but I really do think adding stuff like yoga to his training regimen will add more years to his career.

f*** it, I just love our Stevie. Without a doubt the next best thing about Liverpool FC after Kenny. Having him fit next season will be more important than any of the signings we make next season.

He's f***ing brilliant.

Just hope he shakes off that damn injury once and for all because there's not a player in that league who can hold a candle to him fully fit.

I don't think he's been properly fit for the last two years. Looking forward to seeing him with Suarez and seeing if he can link up with Carroll well.

Definitely. Could be like a £20m signing in himself.

Read the full article this morning which said he turned in training and 98% of his groin came off the bone. That sounds bad.

Sounds horrific and despite all the positive noises I'm s***ting myself that he's truly ok. Only time will tell.

Harry Kewell FAC final 2006 was similar.

I dont think he'll be the same again. too much, to often

And yet Kewell was playing fro Aus in the world cup not that long after.

Yes and he was practically useless.

We won't know for a while yet, but it's got to be a fear until he proves otherwise. The consolation with Gerrard is that even if the injuries cost him his 'explosiveness', he's mentally strong enough to adapt and play for years as a sitting central midfielder.

Of course, I don't think we should be rushing to write his obituary.

Agree. Just a feeling really

Gerrard is going to have to be managed carefully from now on (he obviously was before) which is why two extra CM's this summer is essential. Giving up England will be vital for his LFC career imo.

he's 31 now though, so the explosiveness is going to have to be shelved sometime soon, so it's time to start playing a slightly different game

Yeah - rough injury, and the closer he gets to the end of his career, the harder it is to shrug those off.

Psychologically too - hard to trust your body and be explosive in the same way when you're worried that it might go again - even if it's only subconsciously.

I'm hoping that he's going to be doing the Molby/Alonso role for us in the coming years, let the younger players do the running and let him spray the ball about.

I think Gerrard has the right mental attitude to not let this get to him. We did the right thing last season by stopping the injections & giving him the last 3 months of the season off to get it sorted.

He seems to be the quiet, broody type off the field & completely different on it.

And yeah, I think he can do the Molby thing. I fully expect him to be putting in good shifts for us in 4 more years

He's been quiet and broody on the pitch many a time.

Hopefully he learns about longevity from giggs (and nothin else!) and plays for a few years yet. I hope him and carra get at least two league titles with us, even as squad players.
