* No MOM award given against Northampton because of the low number of votes cast, (Game 11). Bonus point given instead.

This table is not going to please everyone, but it has been a long season and we need to focus on ALL OF IT, not just Kenny's reign since January.

I'd like to give my own view and then leave the thread for people to agree or disagree.

1. Gerrard as winner: A lot of people (quite rightly) have given Lucas praise for finally showing what he is capable of. I have always backed him not least for never hiding. I would suggest that Stevie deserves this award though for keeping his form at a time when we badly struggled. Cast your mind back to those dark times when we suffered watching our team. Stevie was the only player on the park at times worthy of the shirt.

2. How unlucky is Lucas? The season ended too soon for him really. I understand that the last result may have been affected by sentiment, (was he really 2nd best player or did we all want him to beat Stevie to this award?) but he has had a very good season. Hopefully he will carry the form on and continue to improve.

3. Luis Suarez: WOW! The fact he only played a fraction of games and finished with 7 MOM performances shows what an impact he has made. Amazing.

4. Andy Carroll: Not quite the same impact but even so, he hasn't done bad just playing a handful of games. Next season should be worth waiting for.

5. Reina too many bonus points? I feel that his position was given too much of a boost by awarding a bonus point for each clean sheet. Others have also mentioned that this is down to the defence/team as a whole and perhaps the bonus point should be reduced to a third or a quarter. Please advise me on your thoughts for next year. I am happy to alter the bonus point weighting.

6. Our best defenders: Common sense says Carragher and Agger, but a look at the table reveals Glen Johnson and Soto Krygiakos; hell even Kelly before his injury showed us what he is capable of.

7. Please discuss the impact (since January / Kenny) of Flanagan, Maxi and Shelvey. Exciting times ahead.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone for voting this season and previous seasons. You make it a pleasure.

Previous winners of this game are:

2005 - Jamie Carragher

2006 - Steven Gerrard

2007 - Dirk Kuyt

2008 - Javier Mascherano

2009 - Xabi Alonso

2010 - Javier Mascherano

Please raise your glasses and toast the winner of the 2011 Player of the season award....

STEVEN GERRARD!

Firstly, well done Morse for the hard work on this.

I guess Gerrard will leave this summer now...going on the two previous winners

1/2 a point for keeper clean sheet bonus would be fair I think, and only awarded in games where the keeper does NOT get a MoM placing.

Oh, and Kyriagkos is very flattered by that table - he is a liability.

Other comments - Gerrard deserves it, despite the b******s spouted about him on here. His performance at home to Man Utd was the best midfield performance of the season.

Well done Lucas. well done Suarez who would have walked player of the season if he been here from August..

And well done Raul, who gets a lot of stick, a lot of it unjustified.

3. Morse.

Well in, lad.

To be honest my brain has blocked out Stevie even playing fo us before Christmas, so I'm surprised and pleased by this. Having said that, it's blocked out anyone playing for us before Christmas.

Whatever about PFK finishing above Agger - what about Mascherano finishing above Agger! :)

Surprised to see Skrtel quite so low, too.

Hopefully Mata will be in the top 10 next year.

I think if you had to pick a best XI from the season as a whole, it would be

Reina

Kelly Carragher Skertl Johnson

Lucas Gerrard

Kuyt Raul Maxi

Suarez

Kyriagos was our biggest goal threat for a while, possibly why he's done so well.

Cole has fluked that as well. Which games was he MoM in?

Morse rules, btw.

Thanks Morsest. Must have been a bitch sorting out points after rubbish losses with Hodgson as manager.

Funnily enough they are the easy games.

The ones I don't look forward to assessing are the fantastic wins...loadsavotes.

I'd maybe give Reina a half point for each clean sheet but I was never sure why you were awarding it in the first place.

Should outfield players get points for assists and goals?

Posted

Surprised that Stevie made it top with all his injuries, but not undeserved. As already mentioned, he was just about the only outfield player who actually looked like genuine quality under Hodgson on anything resembling a consistent basis. And still managed to pull a few 'I am winning this match on my own, me' MoM performances. Much improved on last season where he was more lacklustre. If not for him, Hodgson would have looked even more dire.

What has most impressed me about Stevie this season is how composed and mature he has looked in central midfield when played there and a lot of people don't seem to have realised this yet. He is coming into the senior part of his career exactly as could be hoped - experienced, wiser and measured.

I am really looking forward to seeing him turn out in full force for Kenny next season. As usual, he will be our most important player next year. Suarez and other new signings may steal the headlines more, but only because we've grown so used to Stevie being awesome. Truth be told, and I was saying this at the time as well, even when everyone were raving about Alonso and Torres two seasons ago, Stevie was still our best player that season. He's simply immense and a much smarter footballer than gets credit for.

Worth noting re Lucas though:

He earned his points by featuring 20 times in the top 3. Next highest is Meireles at 14 and Gerrard at 13, making Lucas easily the most consistent outstanding performer over the course of the season.

Imo, that ought to be worth a few bonus points. Maybe worth a consideration for next season's award? Would make it harder for the player who dished out some MoM performances to go top, but might be otherwise erratic and not feature in the top in very many games beyond that.

Thanks epieur,

I don't know how I can award consistency to be honest. I don't want to skew the points too much, it looks like a fix if that happens.

Cunny,

I was aware that although Pepe Reina had had a fantastic season last year, he didn't have a chance of winning the award because people don't vote for goalkeepers. Some way had to be found to award unsung heroes.

What were the winning tallies in previous seasons? My recollection is much more than than 50. Reina's figures are high because we have had a poor season. I think 1pt per clean sheet is fine. Maybe up 3rd place to 2pts to compensate but I'm not even sure that is necessary.

People don't vote for keepers ? A problem with MOTM votes for Reina is that his positioning is that good that he sometimes goes through a game without having to make a spectacular save, whereas David James lacks concentration and uses his physique to get himself out of trouble.

1/2 a point is enough. Defenders make last ditch tackle that prevent Reina from having to make a save and yet they don't receive a bonus.

Kuyt was poor until Kenny arrived so can see why he's not closer to the top

Suarez has been s*** hot at times but like many new signings that make an impact, they receive more praise because we're not used to watching them play and so they stand out more.

Firstly, many thanks to Morse for the effort he put into this. Super work.

I think some sense of perspective is needed in terms of points accumulated in relation to games played. LFCTV tonight had Lucas as Player of the Season and quoted a few other fan web sites as agreeing with that call; I've no argument with that and am delighted for the lad. He dug in and just got on with it.

aye - cheers Morse, top work as ever

Re the Greek - i sort of disagree, he's either top - a top3 player - or a f***ing liability. There's no average with him, but he's not always s****
