The only sliver of light that I can find in the window that's just closed is this: There's no way anyone looking to sell their asset would invest top money in it before selling it.

If your house was up for sale, would you stick a posh new kitchen and bathroom in it? No. You may tart it up a bit with some new handles and some limescale cleaner but you wouldn't be looking at putting a Miele dishwasher in now would you?

I appreciate that the past window is all too similar to the previous ones but I am looking for a sliver of hope here

Roy Hodgson talked about players being disilusioned, disenfranchised, can't remember the exact words. He said his job was partly about putting the enthusiasm back in. Now, while he is trying to do that, he may be undermined by the mood of many fans at seeing £10m taken out during the transfer window.

I'd been reasonably optimistic about having a better season than last season and that allowing time for investment to be sought. But now, without the striker I think there's some gambling going on. Gambling on the fitness of Torres again.

We may get through to January in respectable positions, Pacheco may have come in and done well, Cole may have looked like a good player and given a boost to Gerrard and Torres. We still don't know how the midfield is going to line up, so we can't write the side off just yet. Its a gamble though, the striking department has no depth.

As I see it, the best way to maintain some optimism is for Purslow/Broughton/Ayre to be more transparent about the takeover situation. If we know there are bids on the table, what timescale, what decision making process is involved, then we can look forward with some optimism.

Would you really believe anything that they say?

Their past record has hardly been credible, especially from Purslow

Just read how much Villa have spent of the Milner fee. We both have Yanks. :-(

be fair, Villa don't have anybody to spend the money.

O'Neil hasn't returned all the credit cards.

I know that that is what woudl put a lot of of people's minds at rest but it's totally unrealistic to expect that. I was recently involved on the margins of a take over in my own company and it was absolute secrecy all round. Most people in the two companies involved didn't have a clue let alone us telling customers, clients or the general public etc.

Absolutely we are.

We have a 'player account' that appears to have to fund contracts. So we sell Masch for (say) 20m. We won't replace like for like. We have to buy a prospect, or get a freebie. Then they come good, sell for a profit & keep the whole thing spinning

Yes.

We just fool some people by not selling our best players.
