Has he had any other training than set piece taking this week? His corners from the left and his free-kicks were superb last night, whipped in medium height, dipping with pace. A world away from what we usually serve up, it was no coincidence (IMO) we had a number of heading opportunities.

And while I'm at it, Dossena can deliver an excellent ball in from the left.

Surreal isn't it? It's as if scales have fallen from his eyes, and he can now hit a corner like he does one of his 30-yarders.

It was a ridiculous improvement.

Wonder whether it was Aquilani being in there... He seemed to want to be lurking outside the box but looked like he was under orders to get in the mix and add some height.

Just speculating because our corners always improved when Hyypia was in there, suddenly Gerrard's got something to aim at.

I'm probably wrong. The free kick Agger nearly scored from was an absolute beauty.

It was bizarre that, all of a sudden, he stopped floating them in. I was admiring Bayern's crossing on Tuesday, wondering why we couldn't whip them in like that, and then, hey presto. Let's hope the short corners end now too.

His set pieces where 100pc improvement from his normal 'efforts'. Keep it up and we'll start banging them in , lets start v a***.

Main difference is that he whipping it in with pace. Like we all knew he could baffalling really.

Took some brilliant set pieces last night

Problem is, we've got a team who dont attack the ball

Two centre halfs up for every corner and they are f***ing static

...as opposed to blasting it at goal looking for either the net or keeper spill and rebound effort...definitely an improvement. At least it would be good to see him mixing it up a bit, his set pieces have tended to be predictable.

Now if he could just have a look at his corner taking technique...

Overall though i thought last night showed the beginnings of a return to devastating form from the captain.

So apparently he can, prehaps it was his instructions to deliver the previous type of corner he was supplying?

Would have thought he had enough cop-on to improvise with those beauties whatever the instructions. Maybe something just clicked in training. You don't stop learning till you die.

Benitiez isn't manager who like improvising, i'm willing to bet he has every single set peice planned out and run through on the training ground before matches.

do you have knowledge or just a foul mouth?

Maybe Gerrard was sat in the carner full of self pity about his lack of excellent set pieces, you know...being Scouse an all

Second goal against Blackburn last season.

Our attacking corner which led to us going 4-3 down against Arsenal last season.

Two occasions where players on this team ignored the manager and "improvised". What you are saying shows intense ignorance about football in general and our team and manager in particular and buys into the thoughtless s**** that surrounds how the game is talked about especially with regard to LFC. So fix that or f*** off.

See now isn't that a better post, I disagree the majority of my perception is that we are very regimented in our set plays, i think it's because our team is coached heavily in that regard.

Anny, get over your self pity will you.

You were "willing to bet..." You'd have lost your bet.

I didn't talk about people from the city, i talked about people who were stuck in a mindset, people from the city are vaired and different why would i throw a blanket assumption at them. It's only you were your defensive attitude and hyperactive imagination that assumed i somehow consider the people of Liverpool to be self pitying.

The quality of the ball is the most important factor in defending or attacking set pieces. That is the point made at the top.

His delivery was outstanding yesterday and with better attacking movement, we could easily have scored a couple of goals
