In a mood of optimism sparked by us not playing any football, and therefore there being no risk of a depressing result, got to thinking and noting how the injuries are begining to clock up for Man Yoo, Chelsk, and the Ars*. Maybe the pendulum is swinging.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm counting on the following being out for reasonable stretches : Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Lampard, Van Persie. What with African Nations disruptions to come, it's a 'healthy' sign. Also, with us having so many injuries there's no one good left to get injured, which means this has been a very stress free international break.

It's 'on'.

Was exactly what I was going to post when I saw the topic.

The only ones that will end up benefitting in the long run are the Mancs

Number 19 here they come while two fat Yanks sit swilling champagne and eating well at our expense.

Think Drogba's out at least 3 weeks too isn't he ? As you say, with the African Nations on the way too, maybe things will even up a little.

It's November, if your cup's half empty already it's going to be a long season for you. Don't look at the table between now and Christmas, Santa may just bring us a nice surprise.

To be fair I think its realism. We have so many players injured and moral is so low. The next few games have us against Man City and Arsenal who must take advantage of our situation. We would have to go on a 15+ game winning steak AND rely on major slips-ups from Chelsea, **** and Arsenal, let alone Spurs, Villa and Man City not having good runs as well.

Lets hope we get forth and then see what those two ****ers allow Rafa to spend in the summer.

I can't be that negative that early in the Season, and a run like you suggest there would have us at least 10 points clear. City are on a bad run, Arsenal just lost Van Persie, and we had very few players in action this weekend. I'm looking forward to the next few games.

'Realism' quite quickly becomes 'wallowing in misfortune' though.

Surely it is precisely because morale is low that people are looking to find positives to cling to. Nothing wrong with that.

I don't see what there is to gain from not continuing to aim as high as possible. If we start reassessing and lowering our goals then the danger is that we don't hit them either.

There is a long, long way to go and I've not seen a side in the country who convince me that they're good enough to go through the season without losing a few more games yet.

10 points clear? We're 11 behind Chelsea, no way they are going to lose 21 points in 15 games, they've only lost 6 in their first 12.

there is a good chance they wont lose 21 points over the rest of the season

i must admire the fantasy world many of our fans inhabit. it must be bloody great

I was using the given example of us winning 15 in a row being excessive against their major slip up. If they carried on at current pace against such a scenario for us, we'd be just 3 points behind, a minor slip would see us a couple in front, a major slip about 10 or so infront.

It's not my scenario, I'm just pointing out how unnecessary it would be for us to win 15+ games in a row, AND hope for a major slip by anyone.

How would you define a major slip up ? I'd say something like our form so far of 19 pts in 12 games ? 24 in 15 would actually be better than our performance so far.

Shame I can't admire the miserable world some of you lot live in. If you actually bother to read my posts, you'd see I was just pointing out how unnecessarily over the top the suggested, required reversal of fortune would be.

I don't see anywhere where I've said I expect us to be 10 points clear. I'm not the fantasist , I'm just highlighting the exaggerated nature of the merchants of doom.

i dont think any of the title challengers will go through a "major slip up" anywhere close to our present run of form. titles arent won before christmas, but they are lost. we wont be in the running, we wont be anywhere near the running, and we have a major battle on to get 4th. as unpaletable as that might seem to many, thats the reality

so basically if we play as well as chelsea are and chelsea, arsenal and the mancs play as well as we do we have a chance of winning the league.

unfortunaly it's more likely that we'll play as well as we have been and chelsea, arsenal and the mancs play as well as they have been

Neither do I, and they don't need to. I think it will be very very difficult for us to get anywhere near Chelsea, but we're only 6 points behind the Manc's with 26 games to go for goodness sake. I refuse to wallow, just can't see the point of following the game if you're that negative. I'm not sat here with a jester hat on, big cheesey grin, blissfully unaware of out current plight, I can just see the potential for improvement.

fine, well prepare for a major disappointment then

Read again, although I'm not sure it'd be worth it as you haven't managed to understand it thus far. Just for clarity, THE REQUIRED SCENARIO PAINTED BY THE NEGATIVE POSTER IS AS UNNECESSARY AS IT IS UNLIKELY.

Jebus, for the avoidance of doubt, I don't think we will win 15 in a row, and I don't think Chelsea will suffer as bad a run of form as we have. I also do not think we are reduced to fighting City, Villa and Spurs for 4th.

I am an optimist and I am not going to totally right off our chances - how may of us thought in November 2004 we would be European champions again? We COULD still win it, but the chances are so remote we would be looking at one of the greatest feats ever (or biggest ****-ups by the other 3)

A lucky goal against Man City to win the game, the Yanks actually giving Rafa some money in January, injuries clearing up, Gerrard and Torres hitting form. It is POSSIBLE, just highly unlikey.

I think the main thing for me is after the two days of mourning and feeling like **** after every defeat (or draw) and having ****ing VILLA FANS take the ***, I pick myself up and think we could still be OK, only to get kicked yet again in the next game.....

(PS - and yes I know the difference between a cup competition and the league)

right, last season Everton came 5th with 62 points. This season, one of Man City, Villa or Spurs will likely raise that bar by 10 points, meaning, if that does happen, and i believe it will, we will need 72 points to secure 4th. we have 19 points from 12 games, we will need to average 2 points a game for the rest of the season just to get 71 points. we have also conceded 18 goals this season in 12 games. last season we conceded 27 in total. if you dont think we are in a scrap for 4th then fine, but the reality is we are. Man City are also likely to strengthen significantly in January too.
