The term 'legend' gets bandied about willynilly nowadays. But what actually constitutes a legend? How do we define a Liverpool legend?

Medals won? Goals scored in important matches? Length of service to the club? Crowd favourite?

Many factors

1. Consistent good performer against all forms of opposition over a period of time

2. Winning goal in a final/semi final by someone who is an average player but a crowd favourite

3. 100% dedication but an average player...crowd favourite

many more, difficult to pin point.

well in my personal opinion, it has a lot to do with how the player behaves of the pitch.

i.e. i could never coma to like placcy, let alone consider him a legend, because he comes across as a downright c*** off the pitch.

i think player loyalty also matters, someone like bellamy won't go down in history as a legend because he switches clubs like underwear (he'll maybe be a wales legend though)

the true legends are those who have that are great players and are likable off the pitch.

to name a few names i would say out of the cuurent lot stevie, hyypia, carra, alonso, reina, torres (most already are legend or will become given the time)

older players such as kenny, rush, hansen, molby etc.

players outside of lfc like raul, zidane, kaka, guardiola, nedved

Ray Kennedy.

You need to be Ray Kennedy to be considered a legend?

A bit harsh that.

My general feeling is people might tend brand players as legends a bit too quickly. Time makes players legends, whether they persist in memory or not (in a good way). With the current team, which includes the individual players, I just like to sort of enjoy the moment. Legends are the players I will go on and tell my grand kids about.

Legends suggests something in the past, so none of the current players are legends for me. No doubt they will be in the future when they have hung up their boots (except <insert names of current scapegoats> obviously).

There are few legends.

The Sky generation would no doubt think differently - but really there aren't that many. Barring our current players, we've probably only had a couple since say 1990.

It's all in the eye of the beholder, but I'd exclude both Fowler and Owen from my legends list. Is that controversial/unfair?

I only started following Liverpool closely in the early 90's (92-93 i think) and looking back at the teams of the 90's only Fowler is a legend in my books. Only Owen and McManaman are close, their not legends for obvious reasons. And I know Rush and Barnes still played for us in the 90's but their stars had already been signed so...

In the current squad(starting from the GH era) I view Sami & Gerrards as legends. Not sure why I dont view Carra as one as of yet. But Sami was/is a big factor in lifting Liverpool from where we were, of course one man dosnt make a team, but he is still here while most have been shipped out as they expired.

There are 3 types of players:

1. Those who come and go with some impact, e.g. Bellamy, James, They get forgotten after a while!

2. Those who do something that gets remembered in the club history as a moment of magic or few moments of magic and that could be over a season or two, e.g. Fowler, Mcallister, Owen, Mcmanman, Aldo, Molby, Smicer, Dudek etc. They become part of the club's history, but they don't define the history of the club. Those are the ones who I think mistakingly are called legends!

3. Those who decide and define the direction for the club during their stay. Their stay is usually for a long and dedicated period of time in this bracket of the current players I only put Hyppia, Carra and Gerrard and historically, Barnes, Kenny, Souness, Rush, Hughes and Hansen to name a few.

Can a legend be named so whilst they are still playing? Surely their behaviour and actions post career can be just as important?

Kenny - legend

Jocky - legend (just)

McMahon - not legend

McMahon was never a legend anyway.

I struggle with the idea that a player with this many appearances and this many honours is "just" a legend:

Only 13 goals in 623 appearances ? The internet generation would crucify him. Sell the Scottish twunt, he'll never be good enough.

He'd get booed every time he came on the pitch - £110K down the drain. Could have bought an Italian for that.

i always thought you need to have been part of a league-winning side to be considered a proper 'legend'. realise this would rule out a lot of obvious candidates though, hyypia, hamann, fowler plus plenty more.
