New York Red Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Getting two great wingers seems to be the preferred and most popular solution to winning the league for us. But who do you buy? It's not so easy. I not only don't think we could afford who we need, but I can't even think clearly as to who we could buy.
Cam Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Ronaldo & Messi at £120m each. Get the money by sending Rafa on a "Negotiation" course and selling Babel & Lucas for £150m each. I don't know why Parry hasn't thought of it before.
Cam Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Seriously? If we get any decent money from G&H this summer I think we'll have to do a 'Torres' buy and blow most of it on absolute quality like Ribery - sacrifice the need for fullbacks & a striker.
MFletcher Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 No full backs? We need another right back. It's not a luxury buy - we need one, because Degen isn't going to last and Carra can't do right back to the required level for a sustained period of time. A left back we should be able to get away with, even if we sell Dossena, with Insua and Aurelio. And Barry, if I had my way.
DJS Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I'd go along with the Ribery suggestion. He's capable of making things happen for us and would definitely add to our badly lacking creativity. Wouldnt have minded Arshavin either, for that matter.
MFletcher Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) He's not a winger, and signing him and playing him on the wing would be pointless. And for two wingers, I'd sign Ashley Young and David Silva. We wouldn't get either, but I can still FM-it-up when I feel like it. Edited February 23, 2009 by MFletcher
DJS Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) He's not a traditional out and out winger, but he'll probably do better out there than most of the other limited options. Robert Pires wasnt an actual 'winger' either, but he was highly effective playing wide. Agree on Ashley Young. Edited February 23, 2009 by DJS

It's not so easy. I not only don't think we could afford who we need, but I can't even think clearly as to who we could buy. We've already bought miscellaneous wingers over the last few years. They didn't solved the perceived problem and nor will the next two, whoever they are.

Jim D Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) Criteria for wingers1. Loads of pace2. Belief in their own ability, slightly arrogant and a winner3. Comfortable with the ball at their feet4. Loads of stamina, ability to track back5. Strong in the tackle, not easily shrugged off the ball6. Can run at defenders and beat them with skill instead of just kicking the ball past them7. Game intelligence, doesn't acquire tunnel vision and run into dead ends8. Can score 10+ goals a season Anyone like that out there who is available? Edited February 23, 2009 by Jim D
Hieronymus Bosch Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Two top-drawer attacking full-backs would do the job - not that there are dozens of them to choose from.
CaptainXabi Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Two top-drawer attacking full-backs would do the job - not that there are dozens of them to choose from.Sagna should be available this summer.
Hieronymus Bosch Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Sagna should be available this summer. Why? Would be well happy with him.
CaptainXabi Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Why? Would be well happy with him.Well, "should" might be a bit strong. I'm hoping that when the rest of the Arsenal gang depart, he might want to join. Contract until 2014 though... He'd be a great signing though.
Rimbeux Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 For the two positions wide of Torres, I'd be targeting Joe Cole and one of Van Persie or Walcott, all of whom have deals that run out in 2010, so therefore could be persuaded with good offers to push for a move, probably offering Babel in px. Those and a right back to push Arbeloa and supersede him, and I think we're covered to move on.

CaptainXabi Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 We have no money. And yet we'll sign 3 or 4 players for 30M like every other summer. Maldini Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 And yet we'll sign 3 or 4 players for 30M like every other summer. I mean this summer we have literally no money to spend (apart from Keane's money) We just had to take out a loan to pay the wages.

Maldini Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Source? It was in a few papers a few week's back, think it was Kay or Winter, wouldn't have believed it otherwise.
johngibo YPC Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Van Persie would be an amazing signing. Can't see him signing a new contract
