Allegations raised in El Pais today that Zenit paid millions to Bayern Munich in return for the 4-0 semi final win. Russian mafia said to be involved.

Read this in Corriere.it and currently trying to translate it.

Interesting. Dick Advocaat has also said he is unable to sign black players for Zenit due to the fans refusal to accept them. He should resign, not like he would be short of job offers.

MADRID - An inquiry by Spanish investigating magistrates into the Russian mafia throws a large shadow on Zenit's victory in the 2008 Uefa Cup.

The judge Baltasar Garzon has some intercepted telephone conversations which, according to the newspaper El Pais, show that the 2nd leg of the semi final won by the Russians against Bayern Munich was corrupt. The inquiry, called Operation Troika, revolves around Guenadis Petrov, one of the top leaders of the mafia organisation Tambobskaya, based in St Petersburg. The investigators, who have informed German authorities of their investigation, are shedding light on the various business interests of the criminal organisation. Among these, there is Zenit, the powerful Russian team who after beating Bayern went on to beat Rangers in the final.

In one of the telephone conversations intercepted last May between Petrov and one of his men, Leonid Christoforov, shows that the latter knew the result of the match before it was played, and which ended 4-0. Petrov himself, speaking to another man, confirmed that he had paid 50 million [euros] to Bayern, without specifying the reason. Petrov and some of his men have been in prison since June this year. Uefa, says El Pais, has opened an inquiry to study 26 suspect matches, on which it is alleged there were very large bets placed on the the internet.

So Rangers will be made Uefa cup champions?

Would love for those racist c**** and for Bayern to be kicked out of europe

and then we can buy Rebiery on the cheap, which will be good new for Lescott as he won't be the ugliest player in the Derby!

paid 50 million [euros] to Bayern

Ha ha!

I bet Kenwright and Moyes are gutted now that they beat Zenit. If they'd thrown the game they might have been able to buy another player off Standard Liege after they watched them play us.

Strange this hasn't been picked up by the British press seeing as how Rangers stand to gain.

Can't believe the figure either. £40m for a SEMI-FINAL of the UEFA CUP! I know this Russian oil tycoons have money to burn but that is just crazy considering you get £2m for winning it.

I imagine it's more to do with bets rather than prize money

It absolutely had to be Garzon, didn't it?

He wanted Pinochet extradited when we had, didn't he? Has tried to get Kissinger for war crimes and I believe tried to get the European Parliament to revoke Berlusconi's immunity.

Good man. Russian mafia, though :guns:

So this E50m, how do they get that into the club without somebody spotting it?

Well aye. You'd think the line in the club accounts that says "Miscellaneous Income.... €50M" would merit some investigation. ;)

I don't know where he finds the time, but he's certainly ambitious. Make a good TV series this, if slightly retro.

You never know, why not? just to guarantee....

How does this work then? If this was fixed then the Bayern players got a share? If they did, arent they supposed to be brought to the book then? they did throw a game for cash in the end? IF ofcourse this is true.....

There are ways of slipping €50m into a company. It doesnt have to be as obvious as lodging it directly to your bank account. If Bayern are thought to have willingly accepted this then they are in real trouble.

UEFA need to act fast & do it now:

Ban all clubs with Russian connections form Europe

Ban Bayern from Europe

Ban all clubs who have done transfer deals with Bayern in the past few years from Europe

there's a good start
