its because he got forward, beyound Riera and tried to attack, which is more than can be said for most of the others. Alonso, Keane and Kuyt had absolute shockers today

Before Dossena kicked a ball, it seemed people went all Voronin on him. He overlapped Riera every time Albert had the ball, giving us options today. He is physical, got quite a bit of pace on him when he sets off and linked well with Albert today. Tell me what made Dossena the worst player on the pitch today?

I wouldn't be so harsh on Alonso. His shooting was dire, but when he was on the ball in the middle, the options open to him were just not there :

 

1) pass it short to Robbie Keane who was in no better position than Alonso was in the 1st place ?

2) pass it short to Gerrard who was in no better position than Alonso was in the 1st place ?

3) pass it left to Dossena for a cross in to the box where Torres was waiting with 4 Stoke defenders ?

4) pass it right to Arbeloa for a cross in to the box where Torres was waiting with 4 Stoke defenders ?

 

the movement and pace around Alonso today was non-existant

Thought Alonso once again showed his limitations in this type of match. Lucas has come in for stick for last weeks performance, but he gets forward forward and makes things happen for those around him, which Xabi doesn't seem able to do.

Well, for a start he made the biggest number of mistakes out of all the players on the pitch. All of them were misplaced passes and crosses to be fair. Other than that you couldn't see him, which was understandable, since Stoke were hardly attacking all afternoon. By the way, this is the first game of the season where I've been really frustrated by him, so it's not about singling him out or anything.

Oh and, I'm certainly not alone in thinking he was garbage either, am I. He was the among the worst players on the pitch according to these ratings too.
