I just wanted to say what a great performance Liege and their fans put up over the two legs. They clearly played above their level in both games but deserve great credit. I heard all the "pundits" last night saying how bad we were but whilst I agree in part, I think it doesn't give them enough credit for a great tactical performance. They have some excellent players, particularly Defour and use their height and weight advantage well, although I think our performance cried out for width to counter this.

How does a team like this fail to reach the group stages, compared to some of the dross which does?

They are an excellent team. A lot of fans seemed to take them lightly when the draw was made and I was expecting a tough couple of games but they far exceeded any expectations.

Could have been them in the draw for the group stage on merit.

Hope they do well in the Wafer cup.

I don't really know what their "level" is and whether they played above it, but on their performance against us, I wouldn't bet against them for 5th in the prem.

under the old european cup system they'd have been in the cup proper as champions of their country. as is right. champions league my a***.

Is the right answer.

Credit to them, they looked far more dangerous on the counter than we did.

IMO if we had walked past Sunderland and Boro I would agree they are playing way above their 'level'. If anything we are struggling to get into gear and would make anyone look good right now. Our build up play was way too slow and easy to defend against. Not to mention the number of times we lumped it forward only to give them a goal kick.

Their fans have been great though...

Exactly what I was thinking last night. Why they aren't in the group stages automatically as Belgian champions is a farce.

Platini may be a bit of a tool but he's spot on about the entry to the champions league group stages being totally biased towards the bigger leagues.

football schmootball, they look like the coolest team I've seen in years. I thought we weere playing The Warriors. Was half expecting them to go into Extra-Time wearing brown leather waistcoats and Coney Island badges.

They looked a good side and I reckon that Boloney (sic) is a good manager.

They've been let down by the sh*teness of Belgian champions for the past couple of decades because they should really be straight into the European Cup first round.

:D

If Funkadelic were a football team they would be Standard Liege.

they were organised and disciplined and worked hard, unfortunately we made them look better than they were.

Yes.

They are a decent, solid side who played slightly above what they are normally about while we were way below even a par performance.

Few of their fans my mate ran into last night said they were less than friendly, attacking all in sight.

The ones me and the nipper where in with on the away leg were fine - more than fine, very friendly. You do get the best and the worst with away fans.

We should look into signing Mboma or what ever their forward was called. He would be great at leading the line, when Torres isn't

He'd need to sort out his haircut as part of the deal thogh. Worst barnet I've seen for years.

Add a sleeveless shirt and a gold lame codpiece and you've got the coolest centre forward on the planet. He'd have been perfect for a Maradona led coke team
