We have 4 yes FOUR players left in. The Mancs have none yes NONE left.

Clearly a shift of power has occured.

How are you Den?

How can it benefit you in a game when you've already qualified?

gets players more familiar with playing with each other, builds team moral, keeps the players match sharp.

you reckon? surely you arnt suggesting that playing your best 11 as often as possible is actually beneficial?

No. Only play them 2 games out of every 3 or 4. That's the way forward.

International tournament football is a tricky thing. The key, obviously, is to run into form at the right stage i.e. the last three matches (quarter, semi and final). I had a conversation last night about the amount of teams who look fantastic in the opening group games but who then fall away in the latter part of the tournament. Historically, Spain are the masters at doing this. But the likes of Italy seem to understand how to win tournaments and 82 and 06 World Cups are proof of this. They just about scraped through their group but managed to hit form at just the right time. In this tournament, Holland are out after looking unbeatable after their first 3 group games but Russia look like they have hit form at the right time. I'm not sure what role rotation plays in this though. I just think that some teams are able to pace themselves better as I think it is almost impossible to play 6 or 7 great games in the space of 3 weeks.

Yes, because a six game maximum international tournament is just the same as a fifty or sixty game domestic season.

i think its probably more relevent, because the players wouldnt train together as often, so getting an understanding is probably more important, and the only way they'll do that is playing together.

still think van basten should have started sneijder on his own against romania. that would have seen the italians out

I agree. I think rotation is absolutely necessary in the modern club game but can be a disadvantage at an international tournament.

They'll have no problem being match sharp with so many games in such a short time. More likely they'll get a knock or be semi-fit or even out of the next game.

the teams that have rotated havent got a next game. thats the point.

and it's an irrelevant one. There's no evidence that rotation is a reason for their defeat.

It's relevant if you're interested. If you're not, piss off and don't post :D

I think there's something in this and players lose sharpness, maybe its mental sharpness seeing their reserves play so badly, maybe the confidence seeps out of the squad. Very difficult to prove but people will argue over it as though its fact either way.

I think every manager should have a VIC20 or C64 on their desk and run the Biorhythms programme. Genius, that was, and amazing insight into each individual user.

rings a bell that. Biorythms.

Was it also on the Speccy ?

Of course with modern computing technology it could be made even more realistic, like a powerful information tool in a managers locker.

What IS fact is that players, athletes and people in general do things better when sufficiently rested. They are also less likely to get injured if they are sufficiently rested before playing the next game.

thats nonsense though. people get rusty and loose sharpness, get out of practice.

so in factual terms how many days rest does a player need to be 'sufficiently rested'?
